I can't say these are any better than the ones that came with the machine, but I was told I needed to purchase them anyhow,

I had always used cold water. This machine doesn't clean as well with cold water. I find I can use eco-warm, heavy duty, and pre-soak to get the clothes very clean. With no center post, it holds quite a bit. The cycle is rather long though - but I don't mind as I can often get away with just one load.

What's not so great: Lengthy cycle. Needs hot water.

Is there a way to manually add more water to the wash?
This machine often doesn't rinse well enough, the water level is too low. Is there any way to manually increase the water level? Is there any HE machine where it can be done?

I don't think you can add water unless you dump it in from a bucket - but then you might confuse the sensors. A better option might be to select a cycle that has a second rinse.
