This is just a very good low budget film that tries to get the point across that no one is all good and no one is all bad. And it does that well and cleverly. Sure, it is Hollywood in that the number of coincidences is not that likley and the multiple parallel stories prevents a lot of character development, but it is still great.
Its biggest problem is not in the movie itself, but in all the resentment it got because it won the Academy Awards that some people with a political agenda thought were basically owed to Brokeback Mountain, a far worse movie.
What's great about it: Fresh in that it shows no one is 100% good or 100% bad.
What's not so great: Drew a lot of fire from the people who wanted Brokeback Mountain to win AA for political reasons.
