It is Minecraft so I don't expect great graphics but watching the kids play it gives me a headache because the graphics are so antiquated. Hard to complain about it since that is how it is supposed to be.

Poor Design; Fails With Microsofts Own Hotmail
ByK2missionfromLevittown, PA
Considering it's all solid state and has a so, so processor the machine performs as expected. The dearth of quality applications and the inability to sync Hotmail means that the machine becomes more of a burden if you're not using what it comes with or your expect to take care of anything you might use a real PC or an android device for. I accomplish more with the android devices we use at home and the full Windows PC. Windows 8 and this machine have been more of a hassle and I feel I've wasted money on the Surface. In all fairness, I'm a developer and have high expectations for a PC. Surface Pro does not meet those expectations and I would consider it a loss.

Its a piece of cake to sync Hotmail on a surface. I would expect that you being a "programmer" it would be easy for you. The problem might be you need some education on the surface and windows 8.1. I program and sync Hotmail and do all my other job requirements without one problem on the Surface.

Great theory. However, buggy firmware at $1000.00 is an extreme disadvange. Stick with apple.

Could you be specific on what "bugs" you are talking about? I have many of these in the field and haven't had one complaint nor seen any bugs on mine. As far as the iPad goes they are awesome systems but cant do half of what we need them to do.

Overall Great Compromise
Byccmizer6fromPensacola, FL
I had been debating getting a tablet/laptop for some time. Here are the good: 1. Great Screen Movies look fantastic 2. Easy to use 3. Convenient Its really easy to just throw it in my bag, the stand may only have two positions but both are good for about 90% of viewing situations 4. Great Battery Life I can easily get 6-9 hours of battery life with moderate use The Bad: 1. The black back scratches really easy 2. Only one USB port 3. Battery charging position 4. Speakers are okay if your in a quiet room with not a lot of ambient noise.
Overall I really enjoy the surface, its a great compromise of both tablet and pc. Most peoples gripes I believe are with Windows 8, I find myself still using a mouse a lot of the time, but I don't have to have too . Hopefully these issues will continue to be addressed through the Microsoft updates. The type cover is a must, you can get by some of the time with the virtual keyboard, but a lot of sites and programs don't respond properly all the time, ie popup tabs on websites.

Nice review but they would need to make the Surface bigger and heavier to accommodate more USB ports. At least there is a FULL SIZED USB. You can easily get a $5 USB hub to expand or better yet get a docking station.

No instructions on uses--uses unique and new to me
ByGIZZMOMURHYfromOP KS
A simple instruction book would make the Surface 2 much more functional and productive faster for new users. Apps that better emulate those of Apple, especially financial and news apps, would greatly enhence functionality--even those from the same company appear inferior, e.g, compare Bloomberg Business on Surface with those for the I-phone. A lack of instructions have prevented sharing calanders and contacts with PCs and I-phones. The ability to utilize Office is a significant benefit that would be enhence if easier linkage was available to common documents.

Everyone has their own taste. I like the apps on Windows 8 and wished Apple would make THEIR apps like the Windows apps.
As far as the help goes every install of Windows comes with a HELP AND TIPS app. If you don't see it on your system then go to the app store and search for Microsoft help and tips and download it again because you probably deleted it. No computer manufacturer sends instructions manuals with computers, not even apple. You can get specifics on what you are looking for on the internet. If the manufacturers sent out books they would be bigger than a library of encyclopedias.

I returned it after research, unopened
BylexpanofromWashington State
I decided since it could be returned I would grab one of these at the sale price of (as I recall) of $500 and then figure out if I wanted it afterwards. The store didn't have one of these to play with, just the newer updated versions.
After reading reviews and playing with the newer versions I came to the conclusion that while powerful for the price and cool in many ways... I t just wasn't right for me. Partially this was because this newer version of Windows is pretty dreadful... I hoping that will be solved in future OSs.
As far as recommending it, if someone needed this type of unit, it looked good.
Bestbuy was fine for the return, no complaints.

It is only dreadful if you don't like to learn new things. Windows 8 OS is pretty slick. I can move around twice as fast as I could with Windows 7. A lot of very nice features and the build quality is great.

Great tablet when it works properly
ByDustinfromDayton, OH
I purchased the Surface Pro 3 i3 64GB model on Friday August 1, 2014. It setup easily, and worked great until Sunday August 3, 2014. I attempted to turn it on, and it wouldn't turn on. I plugged it in, and made sure it was properly charging. I let it charge for 8 hours, just to be sure that it was fully charged before its next use. I unplugged it, and tried to turn it on with no success. I found troubleshooting options on Microsoft's website, and completed all of them, and the tablet still wouldn't turn on. I plugged it back in, and let it charge all night. Monday August 4, 2014, I tried to turn it on, and it wouldn't turn on still. Four hours later, I pressed the power button 3 times repeatedly, and it finally turned on. Then I saw that there was a critical update that needed downloaded, but I couldn't download it because the network adapter wouldn't connect to my wireless network, even though it had before. I contacted Microsoft, and they advised me to send it to them or return/replace it through Best Buy. I will be doing that later today. When it did work, it worked great. I really enjoyed the tablet.

I am glad you told everyone that you had problems with your Surface. That is helpful, however what is not helpful is comparing the price of a Surface Pro 3 to the price of an iPad. An iPad and Surface Pro 3 are two completely different animals. It is like comparing the price of a bicycle to a luxury vehicle. iPad is TABLET a surface pro 3 is a top of the line 2 in 1. The closest thing Apple has to compare to is the MacBook air, which is more expensive, and that isn't even the same because MacBook air is in the ultrabook category and doesn't have a touchscreen, removable keyboard, and has half the resolution as a Surface Pro 3. If you want to compare something then compare the price of a Surface RT device to an iPad. When you do ask yourself if you get Microsoft office for free with your iPad.

Why would you deduct a star for the costly keyboard? Wouldn't that go under the keyboard review? The reason it is optional is because some people don't want the keyboard or they use a docking station with a full size keyboard and only use it like a tablet if away from the docking station. There are other companies that make cheaper keyboards for the Surfaces.

Good Idea, just not from this company
ByLubu1982
I have always been a skeptic about purchasing a cpu that is not a major name brand. The one time I tried something out of my comfort zone it cost me 6 hrs that I won't get back. Only reason I bought this CPU is because of the portability and touch screen option. Took CPU home, find out touch screen doesn't work from the time it was turned on. Did all the updates that it wanted and still no touch screen. Thought there would be a button but of course LENOVO is too smart for that. Did buy the service plan but guess what? Returned the CPU and bought the SAMSUNG CURVED non touch screen instead.

I usually don't reply to reviews but sir I respectfully question your IT knowledge. Lenovo is a very good company and a MAJOR player in the market. They make very solid well built systems. Actually they ship more computers than ANYONE (see the chart below of the top five vendors).
1 Lenovo 18.8% 2 HP 17.5% 3 Dell 12.8% 4 Acer Inc. 7.9% 5 Asus 7.2%
Also it is called a COMPUTER or PC not a CPU. The CPU is the processor INSIDE the computer.

Disappoints But Has Potential
Bynotstarlord
B.L.U.F. (Bottom Line Up Front) I will be returning my I7 256gb Surface Book due to issues with the pen and release dock. Neither of these features are totally "broken" but they are intermittent.
Full disclosure - I am a Mac enthusiast. However, I really do not mind Win10 and this device has a lot of potential.
Pro: Display looks great. Fast - I was running some programs that require some heavy processing power and it worked great. These programs are only available in Windows. I run the programs on a 15 inch MacBook Pro Retina via Parallels and the Surface Book is much faster. In defense on the MBP it is running Parallels and OS. Tablet Mode: When the screen is removed and used as a tablet, it works and feels great. Thin, light and responsive. Keyboard: Keyboard is solid. Trackpad is NOT.
Cons: Trackpad: I installed the firmware update. The trackpad is wonk. It is fully functional, but it is not even in the same ballpark as the MBP. Battery: No way this is a 12 hour machine. Not even close.
Glitches (these may be isolated to this machine) Pen: Was working good in OI ne Note then started cutting out. Sort of like a pen running out of ink. Release Latch: I am rarely able to remove the screen on the first try. When I rotate the screen and reattach, the machine usually locks up touchscreen and the trackpad.
With the glitches, I cannot keep the machine. Without the glitches, I think it would be a very good machine. It needs a little more refinement to become great.

It is the same as Apple and any other product. The one year warranty covers manufacturers defects. If you want accident coverage you have to pay for it just like Apple.
