Junk
on October 28, 2007

I didnt much care for the remake, but this movie was worse. It just tried too be dark, somewhat mroe sadistic than the remake. It was watchable by all means, I just thought it was junk is all. The gore was good, the movie stunk.

Schwarzenegger's cheese-fueled action epic The Running Man charges its way to DVD in a two-disc Special Edition from Artisan Entertainment. The remastered picture comes in both a 1.85:1 widescreen image as well as the full-screen version, while the audio has been upgraded to an incredible 6.1 DTS-ES Surround Sound and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX tracks. With a remarkable new picture and crystal-clear sound options, it's unbelievable to see how much time has been put into this schlock-fest -- as evidenced also in the staggering amount of extras included on this edition. The fun begins with not one, but two, commentary tracks, the first including producer Tim Zinnemann and none other than the original Starsky himself, director Paul Michael Glaser! The second track is the perfect companion to the first, as executive producer Rob Cohen (director of XXX and The Fast and the Furious) details the production's troubles with the countless initial directors who were all fired before Glaser had the pleasure of picking up the pieces after only the second week of shooting. Those two tracks alone (plus maybe a trailer, which is also included) would make for a fine edition for the film, but strangely enough, the DVD just doesn't quit there! Also awaiting courageous viewers are two documentaries, each dealing with the similarities between the film and the culture in which this disc finds itself released. While the idea sounds strange enough -- and also quite humorous -- the pair actually do make a nice companion to Arnold's neon-tinged gem. First off is "Lockdown on Main Street," an engaging 25-minute look at American citizens' privacy after the tragedy of 9/11. With the help of various professors and scholars, it gives the viewer a front-row seat into the vagueness that has infected the country since the controversial Patriot Act was hastily adopted into law and shows how the rights of the people have been slashed mostly without their knowledge. Compounded with that, the "Game Theory" documentary takes a magnifying glass to reality TV programming in the new century, dissecting the trends that have been sold as entertainment and what the future of television might hold. While extreme in their possibilities, both share an interesting look at what has happened since The Running Man burst onto theater screens and just how absurdly on-target the film's depiction of the future seems now. With the end in sight, one more feature comes barreling at viewers, this time a more fun throwaway bonus that comes in the form of "Meet the Stalkers," an interactive area where you can select each villain and view their highlights all the way to their costume specs. Sure, it's worthless and cheap-looking, but so is the movie -- thus, it makes even more sense that it was included! For a film that never really deserved this much credit, this two-disc release ends up being a wealth of fun and actually worthy of merit thanks to the people over at Artisan.

This is one of Arnold's lesser know action movies, but it is one of his better ones. Heck, Richard Dawson is in this movie. You must own it!!!

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment releases this single-disc issue of Vertigo Comics' crass character John Constantine's big-screen debut. Containing the original widescreen presentation of the film, the disc comes with a stunning 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer along with Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks in both English and French. The picture quality is befitting to the unique look of the picture, which only looks better and better as time goes on. The disc not only shines with its fine presentation, but with its inclusion of 18 minutes of deleted scenes that feature an alternate ending and a cut storyline featuring Constantine and Michelle Monaghan as a demon seductress. Director Francis Lawrence provides optional commentary for the scenes, as well as a feature-length track along with producer Akiva Goldsman and screenwriters Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello that provides the viewer with insight on the filmmaking process of this adaptation. Add in the theatrical trailer, and you have a solid release that delivers just enough from the incredible 2 Disc Deluxe Edition to make it a worthwhile single disc investment for those low in the pocketbooks or not interested in substantial bonus features. This film is also available in the less-recommended single-disc full-screen version.

I loved the story here in this movie. Keanu Reeves was perfect for his role. There are many brilliant special effects in this movie. Will Keau win his many fights with demons?

Tony Randel's Hellbound: Hellraiser II comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are neither subtitles, nor closed-captions on this release. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Randel, actor Ashley Laurence, and writer Peter Atkins. A featurette, a trailer, and a still photo gallery round out this strong release from Anchor Bay.

This movie was great and still is. I saw it in the theaters as a kid and I remember many people being so grossed out they left the theatre early into the movie. Own this movie on dvd as it is a great movie. Pinhead is just flat out creepy.

The Matrix came along at just the right time in the history of the DVD format. With its incredible action scenes and futuristic plot, it proved to be a tremendous boost for sales of DVD players and proof of the power of DVD to present a movie accurately. The 2.35:1 widescreen presentation is a crystal clear translation of the movie's dark imagery. While there may be a lack of resolution in background images, the stylish visuals in the foreground draw all of the attention, along with the powerful, seat-rocking sound effects of Dolby Digital mix. Special features are mildly entertaining. The cast/crew commentary is by Carrie-Anne Moss, visual effects supervisor John Gaeta, and editor Zach Staeberg, and often leans toward the technical side of the production. The music-only "Audio Track" is for fans of the soundtrack only, and the making-of documentary is 25 minutes of hyperbole. "Taking the red pill" leads to a six-minute overview of the technical sides of "bullet-time," a special-effect element found in the film. The "Follow the White Rabbit" feature brings a rabbit icon to the screen during scenes of heavy special effects; hitting "enter" leads to behind-the-scenes footage of the scene in question and then places viewers back into the scene of the movie. Filmographies of cast and crew are also present. Instant access to all of the DVD's 38 chapters is available via the "Scene Access" menu, making this disc an entirely successful presentation of a fun film.

Rob Bowman's futuristic dragon film Reign of Fire comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, and a French soundtrack recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1. Spanish subtitles are accessible, and both English soundtracks are closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include an interview with the director, the original theatrical trailer, and a pair of featurettes concerning the technical aspects of special effects and their production. This is a solid release from Disney/Buena Vista.
