Very nice collection
on January 8, 2010
Posted by: XAvenger
This CD collects music from selected episodes of the Original series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager.
The musical selections are well thought out and you're not likely to find them in any other collection. I loved the suite from the Voyager episode "Heroes and Demons". A grand heroic score from one of Voyager's best episodes.
There's also the famous theme from the original Star Trek and a suite from "Trouble with Tribbles".
The only thing missing is the first opening theme from DS9. It has the theme from the latter seasons of DS9 but not the first one. A curious omission.
Recommended listening for any sci-fi fan or anyone interested in TV history.
What's great about it: Nice collection of Trek music
What's not so great: Does not have the first DS9 theme

Possiby the best Star Trek score ever
on January 8, 2010
Posted by: XAvenger
The score to the movie Star Trek: First Contact is a superb symphonic work and has some of Jerry Goldsmith's best work.
It starts of with a beautiful sweeping theme and leads in to some powerful dramatic and action themes. One of many highlights is the theme for the Borg, strong and driving just like the Borg themselves. I also loved the theme for Lt. Commander Worf, Goldsmith took his brutal Klingon theme from the first movie and made it into a heroic theme to highlight Worf's bravery.
This CD ranks alongside the Star Wars scores as some of the best music ever composed for a sci-fi movie. It is, simply put, one of the best movie soundtracks of our time.
What's great about it: Brilliant symphonic score
What's not so great: Nothing comes to mind

Great collection
on January 8, 2010

This collection features the best music for the Star Trek: The NExt Generation TV series.
The CD for the pilot episode, for the Season 3/Season 4 cliffhanger and collections of music from selected episodes are included in this set.
The Next Generation theme is a fusion of the original Star Trek theme and the theme from the first Star Trek movie. The entire range is featured in this collection. From action themes (I loved the music for the battle with the Borg) to love themes and even a touching penny whistle number.
Next Generation had some great music, and the best is all in this collection.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes great instrumental music.
What's great about it: All of the Next Generation TV CDs
What's not so great: Nothing

Terrific score

This is the soundtrack for the pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
The CD begins with the opening theme for the TV series. This is the best opening theme any Star Trek series ever had. A grand sweeping theme for a lost starship, composed by Academy Award winner Jerry Goldsmith.
The rest of the CD boasts some fine music for the series. From exciting action themes to some brilliant enterial pieces to undersocre the mystery of uncharted space and even some banjo material.
This is a great soundtrack for any audio collection, and especially for Star Trek and Sc-Fi collections.
This is easily one of the best Star Trek albums around.
What's great about it: Great opening theme and music throughout
What's not so great: Nothing really

The adventure continues
on January 8, 2010

This set collects the movies based on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The DVD mastering is great. Paramount did a fantstic job on the image and sound quality. There are no picture or sound flaws anywhere.
The extras give a nice look at the background of these movies and a look at the now defunct Star Trek: Experience. Each movie also includes a Starfleet Science briefing in the extras.
The visual effects in all four movies are excellent and the movies (except for Nemesis) are exciting and fun to watch. The first three have some great music, Nemesis had a disappointing musical score.
Star Trek: First Contact is in competition with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for the title of best Star Trk movie ever (and has cameos by a couple of Voyager cast members).
Insurrection was a fun action movie and Generations was good. Generations featured both Captain Kirk and Picard, nice job of passing the torch.
Nemesis was not very good, but the other three movies are well-worth seeing.
Three great sci-fi adventures makes this a great set for any sci-fi fans DVD collection, and essential for any Star Trek fan.
Live long and prosper.
What's great about it: Three excellent Star Trek movies
What's not so great: Star Trek: Nemesis

The original series at its best!
on January 8, 2010
Posted by: XAvenger
This collects the first six Star Trek movies, the movies suing the chratcers from the original series.
The DVD mastering is excellent. I haven't seen this movies so crisp and clear since I first saw them in theaters. There are some great extras ,featuring the surviving cast and crew, that give some great insights on the history of the movies. My favorite extras were the Starfleet Science briefings.
Star Trek II-IV are the best of the movies. This is a three movie story arc that represents the peak of the Original series. Star Trek VI is a fun movie and serves as a bridge between the Original series and Next Generation. All four of these movies are exciting, well-written and feature great music and visual effects.
The first Star Trek movie has some great music and stunning visual effect, but it moves far too slowly. This movie spends too much time on visual effect shots. As for Star Trek V, poorly written and lousy visual effects.
All in all, this is a great set! Four great movies in one collection. If you are into sci-fi this is a great addition to your DVD collection. If you are a Star Trek fan, then you know your collection will never be complete without this.
Live long and prosper.
What's great about it: Four great Star Trek movies
What's not so great: Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek V

"Power is Everything." This is the law of Tekken. All seek it. All are consumed by it. In the end, all bow to its immutable logic. Each warrior has a unique motivation for entering the 6th King of the Iron Fist Tournament: Respect. Vengeance. Honor. Righteousness. Family.

Superb fighting game
on January 6, 2010
Posted by: XAvenger
I hadn't played Tekken in a while but this is one of the best fighting games around.
The graphics are outstanding, even on my standard defenition TV (I really want to see this in HD). The design and personality of each character is distinctive, you'll no doubt find a favorite fighter. The music rocks and fits the action nicely.
The controls are the same as in the rest of the series (one button controls the right punch, another the left punch, right kick, left kick). It's a complex set up, but it works great and quickly becomes intuitive. Blocking is done by pushing back on the on the control pad (much better than Virtua Fighter's guard button). The conrols are quick and responsive and the action moves at a fast and furious pace.
The only problem is scenario mode. The controls, while so responsive in other modes, are a battle in scenario mode. It's difficult, if not altogether impossible to execute certain moves or combos in scenario mode (there are no problems in arcade or other fighting modes by the way) and a lack of camera controls makes it hard to see whats around you. At least no one's forcing you to play scenario mode, so you can ignore it if you like.
All in all, this is a high-quality game. If you like fighitng games, check out Tekken 6.
What's great about it: Great graphics and lots of fast paced action
What's not so great: Scenario mode

A perfect Christmas gift
on December 14, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
This collection features four great Christmas cartoons from Disney.
'Santa's Workshop' is a great 'Silly Symphony' cartoon. This one shows the elves at work making toys in preparation for Christmas. Colorful and expertly animated and with a delightful musical score.
'Small One' is a brilliant short film by Don Bluth which tells the simple tale of a peasant boy living in the Middle East who must sell a donkey who has gotten too old to carry loads of wood. The boy ultimately sells the donkey to a certain carpenter from Bethleham for a task which will change the course of the world. Emotional and powerful.
'Pluto's Christmas Tree' is one of my all-time favorties. In this cartoon, Mickey takes a Christmas tree home, a tree that happens to be Chip and Dale's home. Pluto notices this and tries to tell Mickey. This is one of the most hilarious cartoons I have ever seen. Classic Disney!
The highlight, of course, is 'Mickey's Christmas Carol'. A short film which casts Mickey and company as the characters from Charles Dickens 'A Christmas Carol'. This is one of the finest, and most faithful adaptations any Dickens novel has ever received, it may not follow the novel to the letter but it is faithful to the spirit of the story. I think Dickens himself would have enjoyed this. It is also one of the best animated films Disney has ever produced. At turns funny and heart-rending, and brilliantly animated.
The only extras on this DVD are previews of upcoming Disney movies. I would have liked to have had a feature on the making of 'Small One' and one on 'Mickey's Christmas Carol'.
All together, this is a great collection of classic Disney cartoons and perfect viewing for the Christmas season. Excellent for family viewing, this is something adults and children can enjoy. This DVD makes a perfect stocking stuffer. Get it as a Cristmas gift or buy it for yourself!
What's great about it: Four classic Disney cartoons
What's not so great: Would have liked some features on the making of some of the cartoons

The critics are wrong

This is a great sequel to the first Transformers movie. The visual effects are fantastic, the action scenes are exciting and the story (once it gets moving) is well told.
In this movie, an ancient Transformer tries to unlock a source of energy that could give him unlimited power while alos destroying the Earth. It's up to the Autobots to stop him. This movie treats us to scenes of, not just action, but also of true heroism. There are many instances of people, both Human and Autobot, standing against impossible odds for the sake of what is right. Optimus Prime proves once again that he is one of sci-fi's greatest heroes.
The visuals are top notch and the Transformers all look very cool. There are many points in the film where it is impossible to tell where the real ends and the CGI begins. The action scenes are all bigger and bolder than in just about any other movie and are sure to rock you.
The music is exciting and stirring. Superb orchestral score.
The only problem is that the story takes a few minutes to get moving. But once it does, it takes you on a rollercoaster ride of thrills.
For fun and action, you can't go wrong with Transformers. Looking forward to Transformers 3!
What's great about it: Exciting Transformers adventure
What's not so great: Plot takes a few minutes to get moving

Like its prequel, the "director's cut" DVD of Aliens is packed full of special features, and is a very high-quality presentation of the film as well. Most notably missing from the disc's special features is a commentary track with director James Cameron, but this is compensated for by an extended onscreen interview conducted just prior to the film's release. Other extras include an extensive still photo/concept art section detailing every aspect of the film, behind-the-scenes footage, theatrical trailers, and best of all, almost 20 minutes of essential, restored footage. Technically, the film has received first-class treatment as well, with a beautiful anamorphic transfer digitally remastered in THX. Aliens won several awards for visual effects, including an Academy Award, and the disc's producers have taken great pains to preserve these visuals in as pristine a manner as possible. There is almost no spotting or pixilation on the transfer, and the colors are well balanced with deep blacks and non-bleeding lights. The soundtrack has been faithfully reproduced and remastered in digital 5.1 THX, which serves the many action scenes well and creates a strong, eerie surround presence. Between the excellent transfer and comprehensive extras package, this disc is the definitive version of Aliens.

Brilliant sci-fi action
on October 22, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Fifity-seven years after Alien, a squad of Marines swoops in to exterminate the Aliens.
This sequel to Alien takes the concept of a parastic Alien monster and expands on it. Rather than try to duplictae the first movie, director James Cameron gives us a white-knuckle action adventure movie.
Well-developed characters, a brilliantly written story, superb visual effects and thrilling action makes for great sci-fi entertainment.
This DVD is the extended edition of Aliens, with a lot of scenes not included in the theatrical version. The Special Edition is far superior to the theatrical version. In fact, the Special Edition makes the theatrical version feel like a work in progress.
While this is not an overly violent movie, Aliens is violent enough to warrant its 'R' rating.
Aliens is truly one of the best movies ever made and is easily the best of the 'Alien' series.
What's great about it: A great sequel to Alien
What's not so great: Nothing

Haven't had a chance to view all the other discs but what a disappiontment. Question is do I exchange again or simply ask for a refund???? Anyone else have similar problem?

Good Movie If You Don't Have A Sony or Samsung
By Enchanter from Trenton, MI
Lots of talk with the First Class movie not working with Sony. It would not work with my Sony BDP S350. Which is NOT 3D. I had to disable the internet connection "Do not allow disc to access internet" or some such. Then I had to delete the data file the Xmen movie had already installed when I tried to watch it the first time. This isn't easy either as it normally doesn't display the stored data in the setup menu. I had to do this by inserting an invalid disc. In this case the digital copy. Then I got the menu to delete the First Class data file. What a pain, I'm watching this now and it BETTER be good, lol. If your not up to this then get the DVD. Hope this helps someone.

Good value for the money. One BRD issue.
By burrisd from Fredericksburg, VA
As a Star Wars fan I find this a good value for the money. I have a problem with the blu-ray discs, which is in no way a fault of Best Buy. Every single disc seems to enter a pause mode during the movie and then speeds up without audio. I have to stop playing the disc and restart it again. This happens regardless of which blu-ray player I use. Other than that, I would recommend this product.
