Brilliant Score
on June 12, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
This is one of the best scores I've heard. Stargate was a solid sci-fi action movie and featured a breathtaking soundtrack. This deluxe edition has all the fantastic music from the movie.
The soundtrack is an outstanding mix of Egyptian musical motifs and a rousing symphonic score.
For fans of the TV series Stargate SG-1, the movie soundtrack forms the basis for much of the score used in the TV series (particualrly the opening theme).
Highly recommended.
What's great about it: Stirring music
What's not so great: nothing

Is the third time really the charm? It may just be with 1994's Stargate, released for the third time in this "Ultimate Edition." Artisan is known for continually updating their discs, but this two-disc set is still impressive in many ways. Both DVDs have the film -- the first with the 128-minute director's cut and the second with the 121-minute theatrical version -- and, for the most part, they look fantastic. The 2.35:1 image, finally anamorphic, really shines. Colors are represented as they should be and detail is constantly strong. The predominant gold tones really stand out, and distracting elements are kept to an absolute minimum. While that is good, the sound takes this set a step further. Both Dolby Surround EX and DTS 6.1 ES tracks are offered, and they are intense. Surrounds are used extensively, and to great effect, as is the thunderous bass that will surely test any good sound system. At the same time, the quieter moments, including dialogue, are never drowned out. Where the film falters is the supplements, which are good, but it's questionable whether they're "ultimate." The director's cut does include a good scene-specific commentary track from director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. These two have a history together and enjoy the work they do, as is obvious from their comments on this track. Also on this disc is the brief featurette "Is there a Stargate?" consisting of an interview with Chariots of the Gods? author Erich Von D~niken. For a popcorn movie, his theories are treated all a little too seriously, though it's still enjoyable to watch. The second disc, with the theatrical cut, doesn't have a commentary, but it does have a 22-minute documentary, entitled "The Making of Stargate: Creating a Whole New World." Other than a very annoying narration, it does offer some insight into the production, though it never goes too far in depth. Interviews with a number of crew members are included, but oddly enough, not the main two, Emmerich or Devlin. Finishing things off are two theatrical trailers and a fairly extensive biography and filmography section, as well as some lengthy production notes. Ultimate Edition may be something of an overstatement, but fortunately, the pluses outweigh the minuses with this release.

The beginning of a legend
on June 12, 2009

Stargate is a very good sci-fi action movie.
The story involves an ancient alien device (the Stargate) used to travel to other worlds. A special forces team is sent through the Stargate on a recon mission. They come out of the gate on a world dominated by an alien calling himself 'Ra' after the Egyptian Sun God.
The story is well thought out and works with Egyptian mythology very effectively. If you are thinking this is another cerebreal science fiction movie, think again. Stargate features some exciting action scenes and a host of fine visual effects that still hold up (impressive when you consider this movie is more than 10 years old).
Stargate's main contribution to the sci-fi world is that it was the basis for the TV series Stargate SG-1. While the cast in the movie was good, the TV series cast was better. Kurt Russel did a good job as Col. O' Neill in the movie, but Richard Dean Anderson (TV series) gave the character more depth.
The extras are kind of skimpy, I would have liked a featurette on the possible physics behind the Stargate. And there are a few very minor source material problems here and there.
All in all, this is a much better than average sci-fi movie. If you are curious about Stargate, this is the starting point.
What's great about it: Nice sci-fi actioner
What's not so great: I liked the SG-1 cast better

A great action movie
on April 14, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
This has become one of my favorite movies!
It ranks among the best sci-fi action movies ever made. Transformers does what many would say was impossible, namely doing Transformers in live-action and making it believable.
The effects are jaw-droppingly good. From the transformations to the Transformers moving and interacting with thier enviroment. It is quite literally impossible to tell where the real ends and the CGI effects begin.
The story is well written, the Autobots and Decepticons are seacrhing for the Allspark which is thier source of life and we get caught in the middle of thier war. Lots of exciting action scenes keep the intensity at maximum. The movie boasts some fine performances, from Hugo Weavings Megatron to Peter Cullen's Optimus Prime.
Highly recommended!
What's great about it: Lots of action, great visual effects
What's not so great: Nothing

Kickin' it old scool

This is easily one of the best retro collections ever. I owned a Sega Genesis many years back and this collections has most of my favorites. It's gret having Sonic the Hedgehog, Columns, Streets of Rage, Shinobi and Vectorman all in one collection.
The controls work very well, which I am thankful for. I have played some retro collections where current controllers were not taken into account, but Sega has worked these games so the PS3 Dualshock 3 works perfectly with all games.
The graphics may be dated, but the fun is not. Many of these games still hold up alongside the current generation of games and are still a lot of fun to play.
It's also interesting to see how the graphics of the Genesis games evolved over time as technology improved. Play an earlier game like Alex Kidd or E-SWAT and then play Vectorman 1 or 2 to see what I mean.
There are a few minor bugs in terms of sound and graphics in a very small number of areas, but nothing that will have any real effect on your enjoyment of the games. These were probably in the original games and may be fixed with future operating system upgrades.
Also, the original Genesis cartridge for Sonic & Knuckles had a feature that let you play as Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic 2 and 3, but that is not in this collection for some reason (maybe it will be a future download).
Despite these two minor issues, I would recommend this to anyone who ever had a Sega Genesis or who has an interest in retor gaming.
What's great about it: Lots of classic Genesis games
What's not so great: Some minor bugs and no Knickles in Sonic 2 and 3

Transform and roll out!
on March 2, 2009

This movie rocks!
The animated movie follows the classic TV series of the same name and features all the great characters longtime transformers fans know and love.
In this movie, the Decepticons have conquered Cybertron and a new menace named Unicron lurks on the horizon. Transformers; The Movie features some brilliantly animated and exciting actions scenes with more Transformers than you can shake an Energon cube at. The pulse-pounding rock score makes the action even more exciting. Watching this movie once is not enough (I've lost track of how many times I've seen it).
Unlike the live action movie, which I am a big fan of, this one features more of that Transformers themselves than Human characters. If you have a favorite character from the TV series, he's probably in this movie.
The voice cast features Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, who played also played PRime in the live action movie. Other cast highlights include Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle and Orsson Welles in his final big screen performance.
The action is fast and intense, and may be a little too intense for some children. If you plan to buy this for a child, I'd recommend watching it yourself first, then decide.
Essential for any Transformers fan!
What's great about it: Generation One at its best!
What's not so great: May be a little too violent for children

Street Fighter is back with a vengence!
on February 28, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
I am a long time Street Fighter fan and I had been waiting for this since Comic-Con 2008 Street Fighter panel. This game is well worth the wait!
The graphics are amazing, both character and background with fluid animations and perfectly rendered character designs. While some games may try for a realistic look, SF IV retians the classic Street Fighter look and feel. The characters look and play like the fighters fans have known for years.
The gameplay is fast and intense! There is no shortage of action in this game and the controls work great. I am using the Dualshock 3 controller and have found control to be flawless. The gameplay itself harkens back to SF II, but with some new twists to bring Street Fighter to the new generation. The combo system works intuitively and there are different types of moves to keep you playing for a long time to come. The gameplay is easy enough to pick-up for beginning gamers and has enough depth to interest more experienced gamers.
The difficulty is adjustable from Easiest to Hardest, which is great for any level of gamer. I've unlocked most of the hidden characters, including Akuma, and have had no problems doing so.
The anime scenes for each character are fun to watch, and makes me wish the people who created these scenes would make a Street Fighter IV anime.
The Japanese voice track features some top ranked voice talent, so I recommend the Original Japanese dialogue over the English dub.
Lots of action, great graphics and high replay value. Street Fighter IV rocks!
What's great about it: Excellent graphics and gameplay
What's not so great: English dub

Kurosawa's masterpiece
on January 7, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
This is one of the best of the best!
Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai is one of the finest, and most influental films ever made. The story tells of a village suffering attacks by bandits, in an effort to save thier lives and property, they hire samurai to fight the bandits.
Seven Samurai has some truly outstanding action sequences with some great cinematography and brilliant stunt choreography. Each action scene is exciting and a true pelasure to watch.
Seven Samurai also features some stirring performaces by a great cast, including the legendary Toshiro Mifune in one of his best roles as the rough and tumble Kikuchiyo.
Each samurai is a distict and well-developed character and the movie explores the true meaning of honor. Each of the samurai exemplifies what it means to be samurai.
The movie may be long, but it is exactly the length it needs to be and it does not feel long when you watch it.
Seven Samurai also inspired other films, from the classic western 'The Magnificent Seven' to one of my favortie anime series 'Samurai 7'.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes great movies.

What's not so great: nothing at all

My Favortie Trek
on January 7, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
This, in my opinion, is the best Star Trek series. Tne Next Generation follows the new crew of the starship Enterprise as they explore the Galaxy.
This series introduces many new alien races to the Star Trek canon, such as the Borg and the Q Continuum, as well as exploring the history and culture of the Klingon Empire.
The cast turns in some great performances. Patrick Stewart, one of the best actors of our time, does an outstanding job as Captain Picard, Michael Dorn is equally outstanding as Lt. Worf and Brent Spiner's performance as Lt. Commander Data gives some keen insights into the human condition.
the series is brilliantly written and features some of the best episodes in the enitre Star Trek franchise, particularly "The Best of Both Worlds". Next Generation does make poltical comments but, for the most part, does so without being heavy handed. Mostly, the series is about exploration of the Galaxy and the adventures of the crew as they face the unknown.
The visual effects may look dated today, but they were top of the line for TV in it's time.
If you are interested in this series, this collection gives you the entire series in one set.
Highly recommended.
What's great about it: One of the best Sci-Fi TV series around
What's not so great: First season gets of to a kind of shaky start

One of the best games ever
on January 2, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
This truly is one of the most essential games to own if you have a PS3 and is an excellent reason to buy a PS3!
The story follows members of a small country's militia as they fight to defensd themselves from the advance of a brutal empire. Along the way, we learn about and come to love the leaders of Squad 7, sometimes called the "Lucky 7s". The story sequences are like an interactive anime and boast superb animation and characters designs. The scenes move at a good pace without going too fast and you can watch sequences again if you missed anything.
The gameplay is both fun and addictive! The action sequences are turn-based strategy and give the player lots of freedom to position forces and decide what types of units to place where. Each type of unit has different strengths and weaknesses, so depending on the unit comosition, the game experience can be very different each time. Individual members are distict as well and have attributes that can have a defenite impact on combat.
Just remember to select the original Japanese instead of the English dub. The Japanese cast boasts some outstanding voice actors, some of the best in anime!
What's great about it: Great graphics, great characters, brilliant story and lots of fun
What's not so great: English dub

The first great PS3 game
on August 15, 2008
Posted by: XAvenger
This was one of the first games I bought when I got my PS3 and I still love it!
This sci-fi shooter follows a US Army seargent in an alternate history 1950's England. As the story goes, in the 1940's a virus started in Russia and quickly spread throughout Europe changing people into monsters called "Chimerans'. England, the last nation in Europe not affected, is under attack from the Chimerans and the US sends forces to help England fight back against the Chimerans. Many mysteries are explored, some leave the door open for sequels.
The graphics are amazing and at least equal to anything on the XBOX 360. The amount of detail gives the player the impression of actually being on the battlefield. The game also has some scary moments as Chimerans will jump out at you when you least expect them to.
Rather than just have straight shooting weapons as in other first-person shooters, Resistance has weapons that can shoot around corners, target enemies standing behind walls, launch turrets and shoot steel needles across the screen and even has grenades that reflect enemy fire back on them.
The only problem is it ends too quickly and leaves you wanting Resistance 2 to be released now!
If you buy a PS3, then you need to get this game! It is an essential for any gamers playlist.
What's great about it: Excellent graphics, gripping story and cool weapons
What's not so great: Leaves you waiting for Resistance 2

Good Movie If You Don't Have A Sony or Samsung
By Enchanter from Trenton, MI
Lots of talk with the First Class movie not working with Sony. It would not work with my Sony BDP S350. Which is NOT 3D. I had to disable the internet connection "Do not allow disc to access internet" or some such. Then I had to delete the data file the Xmen movie had already installed when I tried to watch it the first time. This isn't easy either as it normally doesn't display the stored data in the setup menu. I had to do this by inserting an invalid disc. In this case the digital copy. Then I got the menu to delete the First Class data file. What a pain, I'm watching this now and it BETTER be good, lol. If your not up to this then get the DVD. Hope this helps someone.

Good value for the money. One BRD issue.
By burrisd from Fredericksburg, VA
As a Star Wars fan I find this a good value for the money. I have a problem with the blu-ray discs, which is in no way a fault of Best Buy. Every single disc seems to enter a pause mode during the movie and then speeds up without audio. I have to stop playing the disc and restart it again. This happens regardless of which blu-ray player I use. Other than that, I would recommend this product.
