The good GI Joe movie
on July 1, 2011
Posted by: XAvenger
Yo, Joe!
This Blu-Ray is the movie to see if you're a GI Joe fan. This is the movie made at the same time as the animated Transformers movie but never released theatrically (I saw it for the first time on TV).
A new threat, called the Cobra-La, comes onto the scene with a plan to conquer the world and wipe out Human civilization. Along the way, we learn some of the background on the Cobra Commander and Serpentor.
The action is just as exciting as the TV series this is based on. If you like action, then you'll enjoy this movie. There are lots of thrilling (and generally non-violent) combat scenes, we get to see lots of cool action with both the characters and the vehicles.
Just about every character from the TV series makes an appearance, and some intriguing new characters are introduced as well. Both the familiar and the new characters are pretty well-developed.
The animation is of good quality, not quite Disney level but it looks pretty smooth and fluid.
The soundtrack uses existing music from the GI Joe TV sries (and a few selections from Transformers) but the opening theme is new, I love the opening for the GI Joe movie. It's the best version of the GI Joe theme in my opinion.
The HD transfer makes it all look and sound great. I ddin't notice any source material issues, so Shout Factory did a good job on the re-mastering (I'm hoping for the GI Joe and Transformers TV series to be released on Blu-Ray now).
My only complaintis the lack of extra features. It includes an art gallery and some PSA's from the TV series, but I would have liked some more background on the making of the movie. Some input from the producers and voice actors would have been nice. The Blu-Ray could also have included the original script for the movie. I would have also liked a gallery of covers from the GI Joe comics.
If you're a GI Joe fan, or you just like action movies, then I strongly recommend this Blu-Ray. A fun and exciting GI Joe adventure in a top quality Blu-Ray transfer.
Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
What's great about it: An exciting GI Joe adventure
What's not so great: Rather skimpy on the extras
I would recommend this to a friend!

Old school anime at its best
on June 8, 2011
Posted by: XAvenger
This is a classic that belongs in any anime fans video library.
Nausicaa is set many centuries in the future. A devastating war has left Earth a wastland and creatures called Ohmus have become the dominant species.
Nausicaa, the heroine, is a young princess who can communicate with animals and even calm the Ohmu, she also believes it is possible for Humanity and the Ohmu to share the world peacefully. The movie follows Nausicaa's adventure as her tiny kingdom gets caught up in a war between two empires and she tries to restore peace and bring about some kind of balance.
Nausicaa is a message movie, but it does not pound you over the head with its message as so many message movies do. Miyazaki takes a more subtle approach, which makes the movie much more enjoyable than if he'd used the 'sledgehammer' approach to getting his point across.
The animation still holds up. This is an excellent example of cel animation. All of the movements are fluid and natural looking and everything is well drawn. The mecha design is great, I love how those sky battleships look! The character designs are all engaging and distinctive looking. If you are familiar with Hayao Miyazaki's style, you know what to expect.
The Blu-Ray transfer is flawless. Everything is in clear focus and the details come out beautifully. Yet another great Blu-Ray experience from Disney.
One feature I liked in the extras was a short documentary on the history of Nausicaa. There's also an interactive portion with a simple hidden objects game based on the worlds of Ghibli films.
The English cast includes Patrick Stewart, one of the most brilliant actors of our generation. And, ironically enough, this illustrates a problem with dubbing. In this movie, Patrick Stewart is limited by having to follow another actor's performance, so it's hard for him to really put his own performance into his role. Sadly, a brilliant actor is not allowed to do his best work. If Patrick Stewart is constrained, imagine a performance from an actor who is not blessed with Patrick Stewart's talents (which, let's be honest here, most dubs do not have the best actors).
Watching Nausicaa in Japanese is much more satisfying. You get to see the movie as it was meant to be seen. Don't be afraid of the subtitles, reading subtitles and watching the movie is much easier than you think.
This is one of Ghibli's finest. If you are an anime fan, you owe it to yourself to see Nauisicaa.
What's great about it: Classic Studio Ghibli
What's not so great: English dub

The original and still the best
on June 1, 2011

This is one of my favorite movies and it's great to have it in High Defenition.
Tron follows the adventures of Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges), a young programmer who gets pulled in to the Grid, an alternate reality that exists inside of computers. While in the Grid, he tries to return to his own world. He meets a program named Tron (played by Bruce Boxlietner) and joins Tron in the struggle for freedom against the Master Control Program (MCP).
This was the first movie to make extensive use if CGI visual effects, a new technology in 1982. Back in '82, the visual effects looked astounding. The animations still look good, they look very fluid, not choppy at all. Tron still holds up, which is remarkable when you consider how technology has advanced since 1982.
The look and feel of the move is unique. The art design, lighting, costming and music create an alternate world that looks truly otherworldly. Waching this movie, you don't see a different version of our everyday world but a whole other universe.
The quality of the Blu-Ray transfer is exemplary. There were some issues with the DVD that are not a factor with the Blu-Ray. All the fantastic visuals and sounds come through in crystal clarity. This is the best Tron has ever looked.
The extras include some nice featurettes on the making of Tron, but my favorites are the early CGI films. There are several examples of some early CGI footage. They may look primitive by today's standards, but they all give an inkling as to the future potential of CGI visual effect. It even includes CGI animation the director, Steven Lindsberger used to promote his studio and was the first appearance of Tron(though in a much different form).
Tron is an amazing High defenition experience. It wa cutting edge for its day and is now an enduring classic. Essential for any B;u-Ray collection.
What's great about it: A great movie in HD
What's not so great: Nothing really

An Epic of tiny proportions
on May 29, 2011
Posted by: XAvenger
This was PIXAR's second movie after 'Toy Story'.
Loosely based on Seven Samurai and inspired by the Silly Symphony The Grasshopper and the Ants, A Bug's Life chronicles an ant colony besieged by grasshoppers who steal thier food. Flik, the hero, goes on a quest to find warrior bugs to help the colony. He finds a troupe of circus bugs that he mistakes for warriors.
The animation is much improved over Toy Story, owing to the advancement of CGI technology. The movements are much more fluid and natural looking. The lighting and shading effects are also more advanced than the technology available when PIXAR made Toy Story. This gives an inkling of what is to come from PIXAR. This was cutting edge when A Bug's Life was made. The technology may be a bit dated, but the fun is not. A Bug's Life is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen and is always a pleasure to watch.
The Blu-Ray transfer, as with other Disney Blu-Rays, is exemplary! Everything is in clear focus and very sharply defined. The level of detail is amazing. Yet another flawless HD transfer from Disney.
There are some nice extras on the making of A Bug's Life, including some research footage of real bugs. It also has two great animted shorts. One is 'Geri's Game' about an old coot playing a game of chess against himself (little realizing that his opponent cheats) and the Silly Symphony The Grasshopper and the Ants which inspired the movie.
For a fun movie for the whole family, you can't go wrong with A Bug's Life. The biggest little adventure there is!
What's great about it: Great fun for the whole family
What's not so great: Nothing really

Incredible

This is one of the best super hero movies ever made! The Incredibles tells the exciting tale of a family of super heroes who must save the world from a would-be world conquerer. Along the way, they come together as a very close knit family.
The animation is outstanding, as is to be expected from a PIXAR movie. Everything is expertly drawn and the animation is fluid and natural looking. All of the colors are bright and vibrant. This helps to make the many action scenes even more exciting.
The Blu-Ray transfer is flawless. Everything is sharply defined and very clear. Yet another fantastic Blu-Ray from Disney.
The second Blu-Ray is packed with extras on the making of the movie and includes the shorts 'Jack Jack Attack' where we see what happened to Kari the babysitter and 'Boundin'', the story of a lamb and a jackalope.
The Incredibles is action packed and non-violent. And is the kind of movie you can watch over and over again. The perfect movie for all ages.
What's great about it: Great super hero movie
What's not so great: nothing comes to mind

Great soundtrack
on May 25, 2011

Alan Menkin has once again proven to be a superb composer.
For Tangled he does his usual fantastic job of composing a score that creates a perfect complement to the movie itself. There are many light and bouncy tunes to fit the comedic scenes of Tangled as well as some great tunes for the action scnens and some of the more emotional portions of the movie.
This is score is Oscar worthy!
What's great about it: Another great Alan Menkin score
What's not so great: Nothing really

Hair-raising
on May 25, 2011

Tangled tells the tale of 'Rapunzel' and is Disney's 50th animated feature.
The feel of Tangled is like a classic Disney animated feature, but using the latest in CGI animation. The animation is brilliant, amazingly detailed and fluid. Very natural looking. There are also some positively stunning scenes that make astounding use of light and color. One scene belongs in the finest art museums. The style is different from PIXAR features, Disney Animation went with more of a realistic look than the stylized look of something like 'Incredibles' or Ratatouille'.
The story is told very close to how Walt Disney himself might have told the story, it's almost like watching a classic like 'Sleeping Beauty' done in CGI rather than cel animation. Tangled is one of the funniest movies I've seen come out of Disney, but is also, at turns, exciting and touching. There's lots of action, but no violence. Old school charm with the latest technology, I think Walt would have been proud.
The music is great. Alan Menkin composed yet another fantastic score for Disney and many of the songs are Oscar worthy. I loved 'I have a dream' a cute and bouncy number which features a bunch of thugs singing about thier various dreams (like being a concert pianist) but the best song is 'Now I see the light', a beautiful love song.
The HD transfer is the same as on any other Disney Blu-Ray. In other words, fantastic! Disney keeps giving us flawless Blu-Ray transfers with no trace of defect anywhere to be found and continues to be the studio with the most consistently outstanding Blu-Ray line up.
I would have liked some more in-depth features on the making of the movie.
Tangled is perfect family entertainment. Yet another winner from Disney.
What's great about it: Excellent Disney movie
What's not so great: Not enough extras

The original classic
on May 10, 2011
Posted by: XAvenger
This is the best screen treatment Alice's adventures has ever recieved and is one of my favorite Disney movies. Alice in Wonderland, based on the Lewis Carrol novels 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass' follows the adventures (and misadventures) of Alice as she wanders through the strange dream world that is Wonderland.
Disney took the best of the original stories and worked a series of self contained tales into a single sotry that works very well. Alice follows a white rabbit and tries to find her way home and encounters many unusual people as her situation grows curiouser and curiouser. The Mad Tea Party is hilarious and is a highlight for the movie (although we never do find out why a raven is like a writing desk). The entire movie is light-hearted and fun and is always a treasure to watch.
The animation is outstanding and still holds up today as some of the best animation in a big screen feature. Everything is masterfully drawn and the animation is smooth, fluid and natural looking.
The music is superb. The score fits the action very well and the songs are all fun to listen to (and there are a lot of songs in this movie).
The extras include lots of featurettes on the making of the movie as well as some classic material featuring Walt Disney himself., the one I found the most interesting was how they based the Mad Tea Party on Ed Wynn's improvised performance. Ed Wynn was one of the most brilliant actors of the twentieth century and it was great to see how he did the Mad Hatter in the live-action reference footage. The Mickey Mouse cartoon 'Through the Looking Glass' is included.
There's also an interactive game with the Red Queen.
The Blu-Ray tranasfer is fantastic, as is usual from Disney. Everything is vibrant and clear not a trace of defects anywhere. Disney has given us yet another flawless HD experience.
Alice in Wonderland is perfect family viewing. Adults and children can enjoy this movie.
An essential addition to any Disney fan's collection.
What's great about it: Classic Disney on Blu-Ray
What's not so great: Nothing comes to mind

An excellent take on Beauty and the Beast
on May 6, 2011
Posted by: XAvenger
This is not the movie soundtrack but the Broadway album. This CD contains the music and songs from the movie and the Broadway cast does a masterful job singing each of the songs.
There are even a few songs original to the stage version. One is a duet between Belle and her eccentric father, this one is light and bouncy. The highlight of the original songs is 'If I can't love her', a powerful and passionate song by the Beast as he poders what may become of him.
The music is just as powerful and moving as the movie version and feautres some brilliant solos. If you are a fan of the movie, I strongly recommend giving this CD a listen!

The complete soundtrack

This is the Beauty and the Beast CD I recommend getting.
This edition contains the Acadamey Award winning score for the movie and all of the songs, including the Oscar winner 'Beauty and the Beast' as well as 'Human Again', a song not originally in the movie but included seamlessly in the movies's 'Special Edition' (which is on the Blu-Ray). The more recent edition does not have 'Human Again'.
Some of the songs, like 'Belle' and 'Gaston', are light hearted and fun. Others, like the title track 'Beauty and the Beast' are beautiful and moving. All are outstanding.
This is one of the best albums ever to come out of Disney. Essential listening for any fan of the movie.

Good Movie If You Don't Have A Sony or Samsung
By Enchanter from Trenton, MI
Lots of talk with the First Class movie not working with Sony. It would not work with my Sony BDP S350. Which is NOT 3D. I had to disable the internet connection "Do not allow disc to access internet" or some such. Then I had to delete the data file the Xmen movie had already installed when I tried to watch it the first time. This isn't easy either as it normally doesn't display the stored data in the setup menu. I had to do this by inserting an invalid disc. In this case the digital copy. Then I got the menu to delete the First Class data file. What a pain, I'm watching this now and it BETTER be good, lol. If your not up to this then get the DVD. Hope this helps someone.

Good value for the money. One BRD issue.
By burrisd from Fredericksburg, VA
As a Star Wars fan I find this a good value for the money. I have a problem with the blu-ray discs, which is in no way a fault of Best Buy. Every single disc seems to enter a pause mode during the movie and then speeds up without audio. I have to stop playing the disc and restart it again. This happens regardless of which blu-ray player I use. Other than that, I would recommend this product.
