Good 1950s sci fi movie
on November 12, 2016

My review is for the 2D version only. The Blu-ray video quality on this 1953 black and white movie co-written by Ray Bradbury is very good. It also includes an informative commentary by film historian Tom Weaver who gives information on the cast including star Richard Carlson and co-stars such as Russell Johnson The Professor on GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, but for some odd reason, never mentions the lead female Barbara Rush. The special features also includes a sci fi documentary.
One complaint is that, unlike most sci fi movies from the same era, this one doesn't have a battle between the aliens and the military which would have added more drama and excitement to it.

Decent comedy with average video quality
on November 12, 2016

SILVER STREAK is the first of four comedy movies which paired Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. The comedy in this movie is hindered because Pryor doesn't appear until relatively late in the movie. Also, the Blu-ray video quality is comparable to a dvd. Another negative is that there are no special features (commentary, documentary, etxc.) included. STIR CRAZY starring Wilder and Pryor is a better movie.

OK, but RISKY BUSINESS is better

This movie is not as good as a similar coming-of-age movie, RISKY BUSINESS, starring Tom Cruise. RISKY BUSINESS has characters that are more likeable and easier to identify with and the script and direction are better.

Shyamalan's best
on January 10, 2015

THE SIXTH SENSE is M. Night Shyamalan's best movie, and Bruce Willis' second best movie (behind DIE HARD). Although I knew the movie had a surprise ending the first time I saw it, fortunately I didn't figure it out so it wasn't ruined for me. Look for Donnie Wahlberg (BAND OF BROTHERS) playing a key role early in the movie.
The Blu-ray video quality is very good, but not excellent. The special features include a very interesting segment including William Peter Blatty (THE EXORCIST) discussing life after death. This movie is highly recommended for anyone's movie collection.

Good prelude to GOLDFINGER
on January 16, 2014

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE is Sean Connery's second James Bond movie and his last Bond movie before the "Bond Formula" (Big Bond Battle scene, high tech devices, humor, etc.) was adopted in GOLDFINGER.
The highlight of the movie is the train fight scene between Bond and assassin Red Grant played by Robert Shaw (JAWS, THE STING) which is considered by many film fans to be the best fight scene in movie history.
Look for Martine Beswick, one of the fighting gypsy girls, who returned as an MI6 agent in THUNDERBALL.
FROM RUSSIA FROM LOVE is a good Bond movie and serves as a good prelude to the best Bond movie ever---GOLDFINGER.
My Best Buy number: 574961271
What's great about it: Sean Connery and Robert Shaw
What's not so great: lacks the Bond Formula

Pierce Brosnan's first Bond movie
on January 16, 2014
Posted by: luckydragon
from houston
GOLDENEYE is Pierce Brosnan's first James Bond movie after replacing Timothy Dalton who chose not to return to the Bond movies.
Brosnan is pretty good in the 007 role, but not as good as Sean Connery and Roger Moore. The biggest negative of the movie is the plot about turncoat MI6 agents and White Russians which is mediocre even for a Bond movie. Another negative is the annoying Bond Villain played by Alan Cumming who gets his deserved fate at the end of the movie----I wanted him to be killed off much earlier in the movie.
Sean Bean (GAME OF THRONES) is good at playing the Bond Villain and Bond Girl/Villian Famke Janssen is also impressive. Perhaps the highlight of the movie is Brosnan driving the Russian tank in one of the best car chase scenes ever. Joe Don Baker is good at providing comic relief as Bond's CIA ally.
GOLDENEYE is the second best Pierce Brosnan Bond movie with TOMORROW NEVER DIES being the best.
My Best Buy number: 574961271
What's great about it: Pierce Brosnan
What's not so great: mediocre plot, Alan Cumming

Timothy Dalton's first James Bond movie
on January 16, 2014
Posted by: luckydragon
from houston
THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS was Timothy Dalton's first James Bond movie starring Timothy Dalton who replaced the retired Roger Moore. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS is the better of Dalton's two Bond movies. Dalton was an adequate 007, but he lacks the charisma of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. The Bond Girl is Maryam d'Abowho is perhaps the blandest Bond Girl in the series. The Bond Villains are Jeroen Krabbe (THE FUGITIVE) and Joe Don Baker who later played James Bond's CIA ally in GOLDENEYE and TOMORROW NEVER DIES.
THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS is the last Bond movie scored by Oscar-winner John Barry who has a cameo as the symphony conductor at the end of the movie.
THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS isn't the best of the Bond movies, but it's far from the worst, so it's a good addition to the Bond collection simply to watch Dalton in the role for the first time.
My Best Buy number: 574961271
What's great about it: Fairly decent movie
What's not so great: no Sean Connery

Good Bond movie, bad Lazenby acting
on January 16, 2014
Posted by: luckydragon
from houston
ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE is the first James Bond movie without Sean Connery who was replaced by Australian model George Lazenby. Fittingly, it was Lazenby's last Bond movie. Lazenby was either fired or quit---the producers said he was fired, and Lazenby said he quit.
The wooden Lazenby detracts from the very good script and supporting cast of Bond Girl Diana Rigg (THE AVENGERS) and Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld played by Telly Savalas (KOJAK, THE DIRTY DOZEN, KELLY'S HEROES). The score by John Barry is considered the best of the Bond movies and features the love theme "We Have All the Time in the World" sung by a dying Louis Armstrong.
The Blu-ray video quality and special features are very good like the all of the Bond Blu-rays.
My Best Buy number: 574961271
What's great about it: Good plot and writing
What's not so great: George Lazenby

Very good movie but disappointing end
on January 16, 2014

ICE STATION ZEBRA is based on the Alistair MacLean novel and has an impressive cast of Rock Hudson, Patrick McGoohan, Ernest Borgnine and NFL star Jim Brown. It was directed by John Sturges (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE GREAT ESCAPE).
The original cast was to have been Gregory Peck and David Niven who had starred in THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, another movie based on an Alistair MacLean, but they were unavailable when the movie when production began. ICE STATION ZEBRA was the favorite movie of reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes.
The movie is very suspenseful, but this leads up to a disappointing ending. The Blu-ray video quality is very good, but the special features only offers a single featurette which isn't very informative.

What's great about it: Suspensful spy/submarine thriller
What's not so great: disappointing ending

Excellent plot but outdated
on January 12, 2014

I recently watched WESTWORLD for the first time after buying the Blu-ray version from Best Buy.
Michael Crichton's concept of futuristic, high tech theme parks is excellent and is similar to his later JURASSIC PARK. Crichton was the writer/director of WESTWORLD with Yul Brynner starring as the Western gunslinger android based on his character Chris Adams from THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.
The biggest negative is that I first watched WESTWORLD in late 2013, Consequently, it appears dated in the writing, special effects, cinemaphotography, etc. compared to today's more sophisticated sci fi plots, digital special effects, etc. At times I felt like I was watching an old made-for-tv movie,
The Blu-ray quality is adequate but not outstanding. The special features includes the tv pilot for the short-lived CBS tv series based on the movie---it was so bad, I stopped watching it after a few minutes. The tv series was canceled after only several episodes had aired due to poor ratings.
WESTWORLD is an ok movie but it pales in comparison to Crichton's later JURASSIC PARK which beats its predecessor in every aspect.
My Best Buy number: 574961271
What's great about it: Excellent plot by Michael Crichton
What's not so great: outdated by 2014 standards
