A Solid Album, but a Disappointment Overall
on January 25, 2015

It was shortly after the release of "Turn on the Bright Lights" when I was first introduced to Interpol. As a big and long-time fan of Joy Division and New Order, one of my co-workers recommended I check out Interpol. Taking his advice, I picked up a copy of the "Obstacle 1" single and immediately fell in love. Shortly thereafter I picked up "Turn on the Bright Lights," which contains my all-time favorite Interpol song, "Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down." 2004 saw the release of "Antics," which is without a doubt the best album this band released to date. And probably ever will.
2007 saw the release of "Our Love to Admire," which I bought without hesitation. Then I listened to it. Something about the album felt...off. Perhaps the word I'm looking for is "mainstream." Whatever made Interpol such a unique-sounding band was gone, and while "Our Love to Admire" has grown on me, it does not and cannot compare to the band's prior work.
Which brings me to the new self-titled album. Yet another album that just doesn't feel...right. It doesn't feel like Interpol, at least not the Interpol I fell in love with back in '03. Perhaps it had something to do with why Carlos D. left after the album was completed. Something that the band's return to Matador Records couldn't even fix, which is a shame and--in my opinion--spells doom for what used to be one of my favorite bands.
Now, with all that said, the new album is, if nothing else, solid. In my opinion, the stand-out songs on it are "Summer Well," "Lights," and "Barricade." But these songs aren't enough to overcome the overall mediocre and unispired songwriting that has plagued this band since their last album. Even the musicianship feels subpar compared to the grand scheme of their work, almost as if the band itself is beginning to lose interest in their own work.
This leaves me with one question: will there be a next album?

Blue Dragon Plus? More Like Blue Dragon Minus
on January 25, 2015

from Dundalk, MD
Not owning a X-Box 360 has excluded me from enjoying the highly-acclaimed Blue Dragon. However, when I heard about Blue Dragon Plus, I figured I'd go ahead an pick it up since the original's supposed to be such a great, innovative game. Blue Dragon Plus has to be good, right? Right?!
Wrong! Sadly, after purchasing the game and playing it for a brief amount of time, I discovered Blue Dragon Plus could in no way measure to the original, regardless of never having played it. Instead of being innovative, Blue Dragon Plus attempts to mimic well-established game stylings while delivering real-time battle sequences...and fails. For battle to flow effectively, using the stylus is a must, but instead of being given well-programmed play controls, players are given a horrible "click and drag" navigation method. This headache is only compounded when attempting to command his/her troops in order to command a strategic battle. What should be fun and entertaining is tedious and obnoxious, and in a game packed with battle after battle, interest in the game is swiftly lost.
On the flip side, Blue Dragon Plus does sport some decent graphics for a game designed for the small screen, and the movie sequences look better than many seen on older console systems like the PSOne. The story, too, is fairly intriguing, at least for one unfamiliar with the overall plot of the Blue Dragon series. However, this does little to gloss over the poor structure and gameplay. My recommendation: don't bother buying this game. Chances are you'll wind up regretting it.

Worst Vampire Movie Ever
on January 25, 2015
Posted by: Parkas4Kids
from Dundalk, MD
As I expected, I was thoroughly unimpressed with this latest "vampire movie sensation." Granted, I wasn't exactly walking in with high hopes--I've already seen "Near Dark," which can be argued as the penultimate modern vampire movie. Though I will admit some of the movie trailers prior to the theatrical release made it look somewhat intriguing, the subsequent commercials about the DVD release made it look like a campy piece of teenage trash. And, well, it was.
Before you argue with my point of view, I will admit right now that I did not devote my full attention to the film. I couldn't, because I don't think I would've survived the inevitable concussion I would've suffered when I collapsed from sheer boredom. The horrible dialogue alone was enough to make me cringe, not to mention the painfully slow story and snail-like pace of character development. However, I was actually pretty impressed with the level of character development in this movie, at least in comparison to the sheer lack thereof with most Hollywood movies, so that was a bit of a boon for the film. Aside from that, this was a movie about awkward teenagers being awkward. *GASP*
What really killed me, though, is that almost NOTHING HAPPENS throughout the entire movie. Let me break it down for you: girl moves to new town; new town is boring; girl meets cute boy at new school; boy is vampire and wants to eat girl; girl wants to hug and cuddle boy who happens to be vampire; boy decides not to eat girl; boy and girl fall in love; other vampires try to kill/eat new girl; other vampires fail. Aside from the few action scenes scattered throughout, this film is a major snoozer. The only intriguing part is where you get to see what Edward looks like in the sun: sparkly. Though why this is is not explained, it's the only thing that really stuck with me. That, and how lame the whole "vampire venom" bit is. I mean, come on, vampires have "venom"? Um, no, sorry, that's called "saliva," because actual "venom" is stored in glands in the mouth. If it had been explained that a vampire's saliva is like venom, okay, fine, but no, vampires have "venom." LAME. I'm thinking the only way to actually like this movie is to not be a guy.

Now, you can enjoy this nearly forgotten favorite for your Nintendo DS. You'll dive right into the action, casting spells, dispatching foes and exploring dungeons with the stylus. Color Me Not Impressed
on January 25, 2015

As a kid, I grew up with classic RPGs like the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior. These games didn't rely on awesome graphics, a beautiful soundtrack, or killer special effects to capture the player's attention and affection. These games sold you on the story and gameplay because, well, there really wasn't much else. So you can imagine my excitement when I heard the original Final Fantasy III--a game never before released in the US--was coming out for the DS with all kinds of revisions and overhauls.
High hopes are what I had for this game, and they were horribly dashed after just a few short hours of playing. For starters, the story is boring and horribly unoriginal. In fact, it's essentially a rehashing of the original game's storyline. Second of all, the massive overhaul to the graphics and sound is little more than a complete waste of time. Oh, wow, so a 2-D game is now in 3-D, but it still plays like it's 2-D? WHO CARES. Aside from being able to play using the touch screen exclusively, the gameplay itself is majorly disappointing. In fact, aside from the pretty graphics and nicely redone sound, this game is utter garbage. Now I know why it was never released in the US.
After more than enough hours of wandering aimlessly throughout the game with little idea of what I'm doing or what's going on, I grew bored with the story and tired of playing. Some games I can stomach the horrible gameplay for the story, but this is not one of those games. To be perfectly honest, I only recommend buying this game if you're a die-hard, hardcore Final Fantasy fanatic or collector. Otherwise, chances are you'll find this game to be as much a waste of your time and money as I.

It's No "Nevermind the Bollocks"
on January 25, 2015
Posted by: Parkas4Kids
from Dundalk, MD
This one's for true fans of the Pistols only. While it's a treat to hear some of the raw footage of the band's first-ever recording, the sound quality is less than professional, and the band lacks the energy found in "Nevermind the Bollocks," and later recordings. The only true gems on this album are the '76 demo versions of "Anarchy in the UK" and "Pretty Vacant" and their cover of the Iggy Pop classic "No Fun," which was also recorded in '76.
Aside from that, stick to never minding the bollocks when it comes to the Pistols. Your ears and your wallet will thank you.

A Total Rip-Off
on September 27, 2011
Posted by: Parkas4Kids
from Dundalk, MD
Sept. 27, 2011: The entire Pink Floyd catalog has been dusted off and digitally remastered. Fourteen albums spanning the entire career of arguably one of the greatest, most well-known, and most influential rock bands in history have been re-released with the utmost quality and clarity in sound ever before heard by the human ear. And while every music store everywhere will be carrying them, only Best Buy has the exclusive sampler CD. Surely, this CD is a deal and will have a choice selection of Pink Floyd tracks for both the newcomer and the long-time, right?
Wrong. Only 6 songs in length, the $9.99 price tag is a slap in the face of not only whomever buys this CD but to the body of work created by the band. If the price was more along the lines of $4.99 it would be a different story. My suggestion: Don't buy this CD. Instead, spend your $9.99 purchasing one of the remastered albums.
What's great about it: Easily-recognizable hits from the radio
What's not so great: The price

James Brown: Undisputed Icon

He was the godfather of soul until his recent death on Christmas Day in 2006. For fifty years, he gave the world music that got people out of their seats and out on the dance floor. With so many years of cranking out the hits, it's hard to imagine taking such a prolific career and boiling it down to only twelve songs. Well, it's been done, and this album is nothing if not iconic. A must-have for every music-lover, this CD will have you dancing like a fool from tracks one through twelve.

Whether you love him or hate him, you can't deny that Neil Diamond is a music icon. His music has touched the lives of generations, and this twelve-song collection is a fantastic addition to any and every music collection. You may be a long-time fan looking for a comprehensive yet inexpensive "best of" album, or you could be potential fan looking to add a little Neil to your CD collection. Either way, you're sure to come across more than a few songs you didn't realize you knew and loved.

Whether you grew up listening to his music or you heard it in the car riding with your parents growing up, you should know Marvin Gaye like the back of your hand. His songs have been featured in countless movies, been played on more radio stations than you or I could fathom, and touched the hearts of people all over the world. Whether you buy this one-disc collection or the expanded two-disc collection, it's sure to be an album that gets played a LOT.

No Doubt: Undisputed Icons
on November 28, 2010

I've never been a big fan of No Doubt. Sure, I bout "Tragic Kingdom" when it first came out, but it wasn't among my most favorite albums of the '90s. But this album--a re-packaging of their singles collection--holds all the No Doubt songs I like. If you don't already own "The Singles 1992-2003," buy this album instead. It's exactly the same, but the price is just too nice to pass up.
