Best Album of 2004
on May 3, 2008

Any carbon-based automaton can get lost in the ennui of a meaningless existence and forget what it is like to experience the great opiate of love and the catharsis of pain. Then comes along one of those rare albums that is so visceral and raw that it yanks one's soul into one's own conscious, pleasantly reminding him or her what it means to be an emotional self-sentient creature. Every once and awhile an insightful artist like Ray LaMontagne burst out and shows his or her fellow humans that there is substance in exploring the illogical. And this substance is the only reason one has to get out of bed in the morning because ultimately it is the only thing that is relevant. Ray LaMontagne's 2004 debut album Trouble is a masterpiece that every man and woman should own. Ray is hands down the best male vocalist in the world, and he writes timeless lyrics that are both poignant and intelligent. Ethan Johns has once again produced a stellar album. If you do not own this album, go out and buy it as soon as you can. I promise you it will be one of the most rewarding music purchases you will ever make.

Maybe the best rock album of 2005, seriously!

Wow! John Mayer can do rock'n'roll? Yes, and he does it well. Actually, this is best described as an R&B album, and I mean R&B in the 1950's sense, not the modern. John Mayer and his solid rythm section float effortlessly from blues-rock to blues(white-boy blues, but well done) to R&B to ballads. The best song is track 3, which is a cover of a relatively unknown Jimi Hendrix jem, and JM3 knock it out of the park! This is one of those albums you can put in your car stereo and listen to from start to finish and not be disappointed once. This album also stays good after repeated listens, and that is the true mark of a great album. I wish every John Mayer album was this good. BUY IT!!!

Almost Perfect

The Coen brothers have created three masterpieces to date: Miller's Crossing, Fargo, and O'brother where art thou?. This movie falls just short of those perfect 10s, with about a 9.3. The first 90 minutes or so of this movie is absolutely perfect, an example of flawless cinema. Then the Coen brothers slam the viewer through a jarring left turn. What the viewer wants to happen, does not. Then the viewer is led down a confusing enigmatic alleyway. Anger and frustration ensue. Darn the Coen brothers! What are they thinking? Well, their thinking a lot more than most Americans, which explains why so many Americans despise the ending. The ending will resonate for days and weeks in the brain of an intelligent person and eventually make sense. The problem is most viewers want immediate gratification, not a multi-layered puzzle that requires one's grey matter to burn calories. My only complaint is that once the viewer understands why the movie unravels the way it does, there is still a stinging feeling of dissatisfaction. That's probably the intent. Bravo Joel and Ethan, Bravo.
What's great about it: The first 90 minutes
What's not so great: The ending

Good rental

This movie is not nearly as good as most critics made it out to be (Richard Roeper [of Ebert & Roeper]declared it was the best movie of the year!). Clooney is great, he always is when he does serious drama. Sydney Pollack and Tilda Swinton are terrific. The weakest part of this movie is the script, but overall this is a great movie to watch as you spoon with your honey-bunny on the couch. Rent this one, don't buy!!!
What's great about it: Tremendous acting by most
What's not so great: Script is not perfect, some over-acting
