The PS3 doesn't need to be connected to the internet to work but if you are going to spend $300 on it I would recommend that you hook it to the internet. If you want to play games online you have to connect it either wirelessly or through the ethernet port on the back of the unit. I run a cable from my PS3 to my router, which is connected to my modem and then I can enjoy the online functions such as the browser, the PS store, and all the online options of my games (Call of Duty, Uncharted, etc.). Just remember, just like a computer the PS3 runs software, so if you have your console hooked up to the internet you can update the console quickly with the touch of a button. If you use your PS3 to watch blu-rays (which you should) if their is ever any updates to the blu-ray firmware you can easily update it through the internet connection. Their is no fee to use the Playstation Network and that is why I prefer it over XBOX at 5 bucks a month. How this is helpful and if you decide on the PS3 you will not be disappointed. The ads are right, it does everything and unlike the 360 it will not break. (I have been through two 360s and brother is on his fifth). Good luck.
