Iron Man - Invincible as Always
on September 25, 2008
Posted by: Superman
"Iron Man" was one of the biggest movies of the summer, and it left us all incredibly impressed. Everything about this film delivered. The cinematography was amazing! The effects were amazing! The action sequences were amazing! The acting was amazing! Overall, "Iron Man" was a great way to kick off the summer season, and easily held us over until the release of "The Dark Knight".

A Wonderful Supplement to a Beautiful Movie
on February 23, 2008
Posted by: Superman
I'll come right out and say it - I'm a huge Pixar fan, and was fascinated by their most recent release "Ratatouille". As is usual for Pixar's work, the film had an excellent story and cast of characters, and the visuals were quite stunning.
These are all things I tend to notice and appreciate in Pixar films, but I often overlook the musical score. I recently discovered this album, and I must say it is a wonderful compilation of the film's score. The music is warm, delightful, and charming. If you loved "Ratatouille", you'll love its soundtrack as well.

The third Batman film, Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials are limited to production notes. The picture and the sound on the disc are superb, but that is all there is.

Fun, But Not Particularly Memorable
on February 13, 2008
Posted by: Superman
While I loved Tim Burton's initial installment of the Batman film franchise, I cringed at "Batman Returns". Hence, I was a bit skeptical to view "Batman Forever", although I was a bit relieved that Burton wasn't directing it.
I must admit that I enjoyed "Forever" more than "Returns", although it's still a bit off-the-wall and crazy. Even so, it still has its highlights. It's nice to see the presence of Robin for a good part of the film. Val Kilmer definitely fits the personna of Bruce Wayne better than Michael Keaton, and Jim Carrey is incredibly fun as the Riddler.
The movie even has some deeper movements, almost foreshadowing the elements of "Batman Begins" as Bruce explores and confronts the haunting memories of his parents' deaths.
Overall, it's not a bad flick, especially not for those who want a Batman movie that's fun and simple. If that's your thing, then "Batman Forever" is for you.

Pixar Wins Again!
on October 21, 2007
Posted by: Superman
Like many of Pixar's other titles, Cars is a great film. As always the story is well thought out, the characters are fully developed, and the humor is charming as always. In addition, Cars makes use of stunning landscapes and visual effects. The race sequence in the beginning of the film is spectacular, and the desert shots throughout the film are amazing. Pixar wins again with this hit. Be sure to see it!

The funtastical family film about "real spies...only smaller" comes to DVD and flops. Sure, the colors of Floop's Fooglies are rich and bright on the 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation and yes, the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio makes for sharp and strong sound, but for a movie that's jam-packed with stunts, special effects, makeup, and gadgets, the bonus features are virtually MIA. Who cares that there's two trailers, a couple sneak peeks (okay, A Wrinkle in Time does look sensational), a Spy Kids website promo, and two advertisements (Spy Kids soundtrack and the book, Artemis Fowl)? Where's the behind-the-scenes featurettes -- the "How'd they do that?" look at the Thumb-thumbs, the close-up inspection of the nifty gadgets like the Machete Buddy Pak and the Electroshock Gumballs, the interview with Robert Rodriguez explaining what prompted him to move from adult action to family fantasy, the, you know, secrets behind the Spy Kids? While Spy Kids might have been a surprise spring sensation, it's even more surprising how uninspired and ordinary the DVD is. It's also a disappointment for kids and parents. Hopefully the sequel (Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams) will be better -- then again, you know how sequels are.

Fun Movie
on October 18, 2007

To some degree Spy Kids is a kid movie, but there are elements that everyone can enjoy. The story and themes in this film are great and very family-oriented. There's also some great humor involved. Overall, very clever and imaginative - definitely a movie for the whole family to watch.

The Man of Steel Returns
on October 16, 2007
Posted by: Superman
Superman Returns is a bit different from other movies. There's not as much action as in other movies, and the fighting is toned down quite a bit. Nevertheless, this film soars. Why? Because the action has been replaced with an excellent story. Superman doesn't just have to save the world; he also has to win back Lois Lane, who has chosen to move on since Superman's departure. We get to see a hero's personal struggles in addition to his normal conflict with evil. Finally, by the end of the movie, we watch in awe as Superman performs an immense act of self-sacrifice. It left me breathless, and I ho[e it does the same to you.
Go watch Superman Returns. Once again, you'll believe a man can fly.

Some have criticized this two-disc special edition of the mega box-office smash Spider-Man, but those pans are way off base. In reality, there is little, if anything, wrong with this DVD. To begin with, the visual presentation, framed at 1.85:1 and anamorphic (yes, there is a full-frame edition out there to confuse consumers), is near perfect. Detail is solid and colors are vivid. In addition, the darker scenes, a crucial element of the film, are stable, with no signs of breakdown. The auditory part of this set, presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital (in both English and French) is both aggressive and crisp. Dialogue is never washed out by sound effects, while at the same time, the use of those effects with the surround speakers is generous. The real marvel of this disc though are the special features, and they are plentiful. The first disc, with the movie, not only contains subtitled facts about the production and the history of Spider-Man, numerous television spots and theatrical trailers (for this and other Columbia/TriStar films), and bibliographies for the main cast, but also two full-length, scene-specific commentaries, one from director Sam Raimi, co-producers Grant Curtis and Laura Ziskin, and star Kirsten Dunst and the second from visual effects producer John Dykstra and his team. The second disc continues the supplements. Divided into two sections, "The Web of Spider-Man -- The Comic" and "The Goblin's Lair -- The Movie." As you might have figured, the first section covers the history and mythology of the comic book series. There is a documentary from the comic book artists over the years, a comic book archive of Spidey over the years, galleries for the villains and the girlfriends, and more. The second section covers the film, with a nice documentary on the making of the film, with plenty of behind-the-scene footage, and an even longer E! Entertainment television special called "Spider-mania." In addition are a couple of very short screen tests, profiles on director Raimi and composer Danny Elfman, a gag reel, and plenty of conceptual art and production paintings. If this all weren't enough, also included are a number of DVD-ROM features for each disc, including the ability to create your own commentary. There is plenty here to please any fan of this film, from those that grew up with this classic comic book character, to those that are newly introduced.

Spider-Man's Film Debut
on October 15, 2007
Posted by: Superman
Spider-Man is a great movie that brings the classic superhero to life. Not only do we see Spider-Man in action against the Green Goblin, but we also see Peter Parker struggling with the issues of every day life. It's a film packed with action and with heart. A must-see for any comic book fan.

The Everglow Never Burns Out
on October 12, 2007
Posted by: Superman
Last year I heard a few tracks off of Mae's "The Everglow" while browsing music on the Internet. While I really enjoyed a few of the songs, I was a bit skeptical and hesitated to purchase the album.
Fast forward to this summer. I possessed a loaded gift card and couldn't find anything to spend it on, so I took a chance and purchased "The Everglow". And I must say I'm certainly glad that I did.
The thing about "Everglow" is that it's different from other albums. You'll notice this right away in the first track. Labeled "Prelude", this track poses as an introduction to one of those read-along books (please turn the page at the sound of the...), implying that you are about to experience some sort of story or journey. And that's exactly what "Everglow" is. As you listen, you chart the story of a young man searching for meaning and purpose. You seen him in his failures, and finally his successes.
But that's not the only way "Everglow" is different. Musically, this album soars. Even when the songs become energetic, the music still feels mellow and relaxed. The melodies are delightful, and the fifteen tracks are perfect to get caught up and lose yourself to.
Finally, there's the album artwork. Each page of the lyric book is illustrated with a simple yet beautiful picture depicting the appropriate stage of the journey. In fact, that may be the very reason the voice in "Prelude" encourages you to take out the lyric book and read along to enhance the experience. These pictures are artistically and wonderfully drawn and painted and make for a spectacular work of art.
So what sort of rating does this album receive? What else could it receive but two thumbs up and a solid five stars? I thoroughly enjoy this album even to this day. The music and pictures are beautiful and a joy to experience. I recommend it to anyone who's looking for a album for kicking back and relaxing.

A Delightful Pixar Title!
on October 7, 2007
Posted by: Superman
I remember seeing the teaser trailer for Ratatouille back in 2006 and thinking that it looked, well, a little strange. However, I knew it was a Pixar movie, so no matter how strange it looked at the time it would certainly come through upon release. As it turns out, I was right.
Ratatouille is simpler than some of Pixar's past releases and isn't quite as grandiose, but it doesn't have to be. It's just an hour and fifty minutes full of fun and delight with a dash of humor mixed in. The story is well-written, the characters are well-developed, and the animation shines as always. Pixar has come through again. Go see this movie - you won't be disappointed!
