In the first season of this medical drama, a group of surgical interns, including Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), George O'Malley (T. R. Knight) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), begin working at Seattle Grace Hospital. On the night prior to her first day, Meredith goes to a local bar and sleeps with a man she never expects to see again. The man turns out to be neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), one of her new bosses. Izzie accuses Meredith of sleeping with her boss to get ahead, and as the season progresses, a complicated romance develops between Meredith and Derek.

Powerful Film!

Forest Whitaker absolutely deserved the Oscar for this movie! James McAvoy also gives an outstanding performance. It was also nice to see Gillian Anderson again.

This Paramount release isn't the definitive DVD version of Funny Face, a visual feast that needs to be seen in widescreen to be fully appreciated. Director Stanley Donen worked with famed photographer Richard Avedon to give the film a unique look, and they had to battle with the Paramount brass to get their vision on the screen. There are a few places where the source Vistavision film print is slightly damaged, but overall the widescreen transfer is beautiful and the colors are rich and full. Barring a My Fair Lady-style restoration project, this is as good a print as viewers will see. The audio tracks come in two forms, the original mono mix and an upgraded Dolby Digital 5.1 version that does not disturb the integrity of the original soundtrack. There are a few DVD extras, but the only one that is really meaningful is the documentary "Paramount in the Fifties," which has shown up on other DVD releases. Donen is a master storyteller, so it's a shame that Paramount didn't see fit to have him do an audio commentary for his own movie, especially since Donen's work on the Criterion Collection DVD release of Charade (his other charming Continental film with Audrey Hepburn is one of the few audio commentaries that viewers will ever go back to. Still, this DVD is light years ahead of the standard video version and scores highly on its technical merits.

I Love This Movie!

What could be more perfect than Audrey Hepburn playing a fashion model? With two greats like Hepburn and Astaire you can't go wrong.

Films don't fit the romantic comedy mold much better than Roman Holiday, and now this time-tested classic is on DVD from Paramount. Released as a "special collector's edition," this disc does have some nice supplements, though far from the wealth of information that this label implies. Of greatest interest is a 25-minute featurette called "Remembering Roman Holiday" with some nice interviews, behind-the-scene photos, and vintage clips. Two shorter featurettes are also included, "Restoring Roman Holiday" and "Edith Head -- The Paramount Years." They do offer some additional interesting notes, but they leave one wishing for more overall. Finally, along with a photo gallery that is as interesting as most tend to be, are three theatrical trailers. The image is wonderful in all respects due to the restoration. Presented in its original full-frame aspect ratio, the transfer is solid. Blacks are deep, while detail is crisp and clean. Momentary instances of grain are evident, but that would be expected for a film of its age; still, they are seldom and hardly ruin this nice presentation. The sound, a two-channel mono track, is certainly adequate for this sort of film. Granted, there is nothing extraordinary about it, but dialogue is clear and distortion free, which is all that can be asked for sometimes.

This movie is truly delightful! Audrey Hepburn is adorable, and Gregory Peck must've been the Brad Pitt of his day.
