Only For Die-Hard Fans Of The Cast
on September 21, 2007
Posted by: Leigh
I've never read the novel this film is based on, although I am aware of its reputation as being 'unfilmable'. The film clips I saw on tv didn't impress me, so I didn't have high expectations for this movie. I only bought it because I am a huge Gillian Anderson fan and she has a cameo. I had to force myself to watch this DVD. Unless you're a huge fan of someone in this cast and you find it necessary to own every DVD they're in, don't buy this movie unless you're trying to cure insomnia.

Marvelous Film!

This is a truly delightful film, and one of Audrey Hepburn's most memorable performances. You can't call yourself a true Audrey fan unless you own this DVD.

Great Gillian Anderson Cameo!
on September 19, 2007

I only bought this DVD because Gillian Anderson has a cameo in it. Ok, so the story is kind of slow, but there is some great acting, and there are a lot of great cameos, including Gillian's. Expect a very un-Scully performance.

Princess Mononoke arrives on DVD in a widescreen anamorphic format (1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio enhanced for 16 x 9 television) and these audio tracks: Japanese (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Dolby Digital 5.1), and French (Dolby Digital 2.0), with English subtitles. The DVD is dual-layered with an astonishingly clear and crisp picture that really brings out the animated magic of the film. Sound quality is consistently good with particularly clear and bass-resonant music, particularly during the action scenes. Special features are limited to theatrical trailers and a "making of" featurette. A glossy insert in the cover of the plastic DVD case lists the chapter index.

Great Movie!

You do not have to be a fan of animation to enjoy this film. This is not a "kiddie" movie. This is a great story that happens to have a great message about saving the earth.

Playing by Heart may be the most basic DVD viewers will ever find. The package includes no commentary, behind-the-scenes footage, actor bios (which, admittedly, would have been a huge task with this cast), or even a theatrical trailer. The only extra features are English closed-captioning and a section titled "Recommendations," which simply displays the posters of six other Miramax films. The picture, with a 2.20:1 aspect ratio, and the Dolby Digital sound are both of the quality one expects from DVD -- not that this dialogue-heavy film pushes that quality to the limit. The main advantage this DVD holds over VHS is its well-divided chapter selection. With 43 chapters, including the credits, viewers have the option of watching the film's many story lines one at a time.

I Love This Movie!

This is a great movie about relationships. This site places it in the drama category, but it has a lot of funny moments too. Angelina Jolie gives an outstanding performance. I also enjoyed watching John Stewart and Gillian Anderson.

Two outcast teenagers form a close bond as they discover the value of friendship and courage in this moving and memorable release from Walt Disney Video. Presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and featuring an English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, this release features no additional audio options or subtitles. Aside from the standard chapter-selection screen, the limited extra features include a production featurette and a Sting music video.

Very Good Movie
on September 15, 2007

This is a very good movie about the friendship that develops between two young outcasts. Gillian Anderson has a small role which is very different from any character you've seen her play before. Some people don't even recognize her. Grab a box of tissues and watch this movie!

The first two-disc set from Paramount, Forrest Gump is a sight to see, and sure to please anyone who understood the real meaning of the film. To begin, the picture quality is about as good as it gets. Framed at the original aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and anamorphic, the colors are right on (skin tones are especially on target) and the definition is outstanding. Darker areas stand out with the correct shading that goes to show what can be done with careful authoring. The sound, a 5.1 Dolby Digital English track, is also perfectly realized. Though there is only a slim amount of surround material, the track is very forward and forceful, taking advantage, just at the right time, of the deeper bass. Also available is a French surround track and subtitles in English. As for extras, there is no mistaking that this Academy Award-winning film gets the star treatment. The first of the two discs, along with the movie, has two audio commentary tracks. The first is from director Robert Zemeckis, producer Steve Starkey, and production designer Rick Carter. The second commentary is from another of the producers, Wendy Finerman. Neither is screen-specific, but both are, in different ways, filled with a wealth of valuable information. But it is the second disc that houses the majority of the supplemental materials. There you will find a half-hour documentary (originally released on VHS in 1994) called "Through the Eyes of Forrest Gump." There are enough interviews and behind-the-scenes shots to make this better than the standard fluff piece. Next are some shorter featurettes, "The Magic of Makeup," "Through the Ears of Forrest Gump" (made up of five short segments), and "Building the World Of Forrest Gump -- Production Design." Eleven visual effects discussions, including two scenes that were excised from the film, are the highlight of the extras. Visual effects producer Ken Ralston and his team talk in depth about the multitude of effects shots used in the film. Finally, this disc features a decent photo gallery, some wonderful (though short) screen tests, and a couple of trailers. This is a wonderful DVD set for a memorable movie, certainly worthy of any collection.

Best Movie Ever

The only word to describe this movie is 'masterpiece'. This film deserved every Oscar it won and then some. Everybody should see this film at least once, but you will want to watch it over and over.

Roberto Benigni's international hit Life Is Beautiful comes to DVD with a widescreen 1.85:1 transfer that faithfully reproduces the theatrical aspect ratio. Both the English and Italian soundtracks are presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. In addition to English subtitles, the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include a "making of" featurette, the original theatrical trailer, and one of the television spots created for the marketing campaign after the film met with Oscar success.
