When I decided I wanted to get a digital video camera, I knew nothing about them. I impulsively bought the JVC EVERIO Hard-Drive Camcorder. After 8 months, I didn't 'hate' it, but wasn't 'in love' with it. Hard Drive is efficient as there's no need for tapes or DVDs. HOWEVER, I couldn't use advanced editing software, like Final Cut, the way I wanted to. Since EVERIOs aren't FireWire compatible, it was a real nuisance.
I went back to BestBuy & the salesrep happened to be an amateur video maker. He said his 'Dream Camcorder' is the CANNON HV20. I asked around for a few weeks & everyone who knew camcorders said the same thing. When it came time for me to buy one, the HV30 was released, which is an upgraded version of the HV20.
It uses Mini-DV tapes, which apparently allow for the most editing & I can vouch it works great with Final Cut on the Mac. Personally, I see a huge difference with the High-Definition Mini-DV tapes (Sony) vs. the standard Mini-DV tapes. Since it's a High-Def camera, you definitely want High-Def tapes or you're not shooting high-def quality.
It has a full-size HDMI port built-in (cable not included) & comes with a remote, so consider a tripod, which I ended up buying.
I sold my JVC EVERIO & couldn't possibly be happier with my CANNON HV30. Last night, I read Consumer Reports & they rated it #6. I personally feel like it should be rated #1. It hasn't failed me yet.
If you're not convinced to buy a camcorder, all I ask is you remember one thing: You Only Live Once. With that in mind, get up, get yourself an HV30 & start recording / treasuring your precious moments with your family & friends. You'll appreciate it years ahead & you know it.
What's great about it: Quality of footage, weight, size
What's not so great: Pricey, tapes are more timely to edit & cost $$
I would recommend this to a friend!

Lots of potential...just not there yet
By martiansoldier
Purchased one of these 4 days ago and installation and setup were a breeze but the product does not come with an instruction manual, which I think would be extremely helpful if one wanted to play with the advanced settings. Honeywell has a few youtube videos to help with the setup as well, which are sufficient to get started.
After installation, AC has been working as intended. However, geofencing, which is the highlight of the product has been intermittent or non-existent. We have two phones setup with the small geofence option. Over the weekend, both cellphones received all notifications and gefencing worked like a charm. As I started to explore the Lyric more, I discovered I had to enter the advanced settings to tweak how I wanted my heat pump and aux heat to function and I am still learning about the various features in the advanced menus. Ever since I decided to use the advanced settings, my geofencing and notifications have become intermittent and customer service has recommended at least 3 times that I reset the Lyric and start from scratch or that I delete the app and reinstall or that I delete all my shortcuts and redo them. I shouldn't have to setup a product from scratch everytime I change a setting. This is ridiculous. After my 3rd reset in 5 days, I am waiting to see how well geofencing and notifications will work.
If used as a standard programmable thermostat, it works just fine and the WiFi feature works as intended.
I believe this thermostat has abundant potential, but Honeywell's development team just need to get their heads together and address suggestions and concerns that users have reported on the Lyric message board. While Honeywell's customer service has stated several times since early summer that the voice of the customer is being heard I believe there are still several issues that are outstanding.
My biggest gripe is that I can't tell from looking in the app if the AC or heat is on or off. Other than that, the geofencing and notifications need to be fixed without users having to setup their thermostats from scratch almost every day. Finally, they need to add to or open up the geofencing radii options, which at the moment are limited to just two options - short geofence at 500 ft. and large geofence at 7 miles.
Based on current functionality, I do not believe the Lyric deserves any more than 2 stars. I shall continue to monitor progress over the next week and decide on whether it will continue to hang on my wall or not.

Why not return it?
October 30, 2014
I read your feedback and appreciate it since I currently use the Honeywell WiFi color screen model for $150 and was considering upgrading to this one, since I wanted the NEST so bad but it seemed to be 'incompatible' with my baseboard heating / AC system (or so NEST said, after I burned through about 5 of them and they kept frying a circuit in the Y1 module).
Anyways, this is not a cheap thermostat, so I am curious why you wouldn't return it for a refund? Is the thermostat worth overlooking the flaky geofencing?
