Not So Fantastic
on October 7, 2007

While it took in tons of money this flick wasn't much to sing about. Stilted acting, miscasting, and straying way too far from the original concept are some pretty faults.
And Galactus, devourer of worlds as a space stormcloud the the Silver Surfer easily dispatches? Yeah...
Just go buy the black and white reprints on the comic run from the 60's, Essential Fantastic Four for the real deal.
What's great about it: The Silver Surfer
What's not so great: The rest of the movie

Terrific Show Cut Down in Prime
on October 7, 2007
Posted by: RobotJesus
With Buffy: The Vampire Slayer making a name for itself on the WB, the network decided to give the titular vampire with a soul his own show, and the result was a series that never pulled any punches and managed to become one of those rare genre shows that rises into true television greatness.
While its parent series focused on the trials and tribulations of growing up, Angel instead focused on redemption. The cast of characters are all broken in some way, and looking for someone to forgive them. They're outcasts who find solace and strength in each other. However, Angel also focuses on the pain that friends can only inflict on each other, dealing in betrayal, dissapointment and all sorts of shortcomings.
You don't have to be a fantasy nerd to appreciate this show, and the stories are some of the most compelling you'll find on TV. Though the series struggled to find its own identity in season one, it eventually grows very strong legs.
Sadly, it was prematurely cancelled in season 5 (the best season of the show), yet it did manage to wrap up most dangling plot lines and end on a satisfying note in keeping with the themes of the series.
What's great about it: Great cast, compelling plots, incredible myht-building
What's not so great: Awkward start

Long Live the Lips
on October 5, 2007

The Flaming Lips once again prove that all you need to produce a great album is talent and skill and that's just what At War With The Mystics is an exercise in. Unlike top 40 acts that are almost gleefully one-trick-ponies, The Lips have been around for decades, honing their skills, mastering their craft and getting better and better with each outing. At War is a fine rock'roll album that any fan of the genre would be remiss to do without. Great vocals, killer guitars and a political message that, while there, doesn't subvert the true purpose of the album, and that's to entertain the masses.
What's great about it: Everything

Should have stopped at 2
on October 5, 2007

X2: X-Men United was a fine example of how to stay true to a franchise while extrapolating enough from it to make a good movie. The themes dealt with in the second installment were resonant, relevant and well played out. Sadly, X-Men 3 denegrates into a sub-par action movie. Instead of really exploring the symbolism that the X-Men mythos embodies, the filmmakers instead choose to see how many mutants they can cram into one movie. None are really fleshed out and you have to wonder if this is just an attempt to market as many action figures as possible. Coupled with the pointless deaths of major characters and plot holes so big the Golden Gate Bridge could be floated through them and you get a movie that just throws away everything great its prequel was. Do yourself a favor and stop at X2. Pretend this one never happened.
What's great about it: Not many
What's not so great: Pretty much entire movie

From director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg comes a thrilling battle between the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons. When their epic struggle comes to Earth, all that stands between the Decepticons and ultimate power is a clue held by young Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf). Unaware that he is mankind's last chance for survival, Sam and Bumblebee, his robot disguised as a car, are in a heart-pounding race against an enemy unlike anything anyone has seen before.

Not a great movie
on October 5, 2007

While this movie does serve up giant robots and pretty special effects, that's pretty much where the good points stop. the plot is thread bare, the acting is static at best and Bay spends way too much time on those wacky humans to the point of keeping anyone from really caring about the Autobots' war with the Decepticons. Add that Megatron gets, at best, a cameo appearance, and that the film strays very far from the source material (why is it hard to at least try and stay true to a properties roots?) and you get a film that is more flash than substance
What's great about it: Giant robots, Peter Cullen
What's not so great: Bad acting, lack of plot, directionless
