'Lil Albatross
on October 12, 2007
Posted by: fortunzfavor
Operative:"That girl will rain destruction down on you and your ship. She is an albatross, Captain."
Mal:"Way I remember it, albatross was a ship's good luck, until some idiot killed it. Yes, I've read a poem. Try not to faint."
Humanity has made it's way to another solar system, escaping the troubles of the old. They terraformed a massive number of planets and moons, and the massive and sterile Alliance government has brought civilization to all. Captain Mal Reynolds of the Firefly class freighter Serenity is not a fan.
His ragtag crew keep the ship running long enough to get into all manner of trouble with the Alliance, and he harbors a teenage girl that is the Alliance's most wanted, simply because she knows their secrets. She's the albatross, and for reasons even he doesn't always understand, Mal is determined to keep her safe as the Operative of the Alliance remains true to his word; raining destruction and death all around them.
Easily the best Science Fiction feature ever. Definitely the most under-rated. This film has no weak points, no regrets. It's an all around hit that never got it's due.
What's great about it: Joss Whedon is a master storyteller
What's not so great: poor box office returns mean you won't likely see a sequel

Bill Murray is having one of those days -- over and over and over again -- in the comedy hit Groundhog Day, released a second time by Columbia in a new "special edition" DVD. The 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer looks very good with only minor imperfections hindering the picture. A small amount of edge enhancement and grain show up during a few scenes, though overall this is a very nice-looking picture with bright colors and even black levels. The audio is presented in a newly created Dolby 5.1 mix as well as a DTS 5.1 Surround soundtrack (in French, Portuguese, English, and Spanish). Both of these soundtracks feature some nice surround utilization by both the front and back speakers, as well as clear and distortion-free dialogue, music, and effects. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English, French, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, and Portuguese. Whereas the original DVD release of Groundhog Day only included a few scant extras, this new Groundhog Day: Special Edition DVD features a few more substantial extra features. Included on this disc are the typical theatrical trailers, cast and crew filmographies, and production notes. Newly produced for this disc is a 25-minute documentary titled "The Weight of Time," which includes new retrospective interviews with director Harold Ramis, actors Andie MacDowell and Stephen Tobolowsky, writer Danny Rubin, and producer Trevor Albert. This is a very nice documentary that includes funny anecdotes and stories about the production. Finally, there is a new commentary track by director Harold Ramis, which features the director chatting about the difficulties in making the movie, how it was working with star Bill Murray, and other tidbits about the movie. Taken as a whole, this new Groundhog Day: Special Edition DVD is a great disc for fans of the movie to own (though Bill Murray's non-participation in the new extra features is a bummer).

What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered? -- Phil Conners
The comedy stylings of Bill Murray are usually worth watching, but they were never so poignant as they were Groundhog Day.
Struggling through the unlikely happenstance of his least favorite day of the year constantly repeating itself, Murray's character, Phil Conners, struggles to find reason in his circumstances in a journey that frequently seems to mirror a normal life in endlessly entertaining ways.
What's great about it: Humor lined with philosophy, wrapped in a story that satisfies
What's not so great: I'm not a big Andie McDowell fan

This three-disc set contains all 22 episodes from the Emmy Award-winning first season of the situation comedy Arrested Development. Each is presented in an anamorphic widescreen transfer that preserves the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include three commentary tracks recorded by series creator Mitchell Hurwitz. He is joined by many of the cast members on one of those commentary tracks. Deleted scenes, original songs by David Schwartz, and footage from a panel discussion on the show held at the Museum of Television & Radio round out this excellent collection from 20th Century Fox.

Best show ever cancelled
on October 9, 2007

It usually takes great shows a little time to find their sea legs. Characters are raw and undeveloped, actors aren't quite getting the kind of direction they'll get a season or two down the road, writers a little uncertain where they're going so they leave themselves some wiggle room. Not so with Arrested Development. From the Pilot on it delivers hilarious lines, a consistent yet developing chemistry between characters, and as much consistency in writing as you can expect from a show that isn't especially plot-based.
Micheal (Jason Bateman) works for his father at a housing development company named after the family: The Bluth Company. His siblings are ne'er-do-well's who have never worked in their lives and still pick up company paychecks. When his father is arrested (are you starting to see where the name came from?) for reasons that remain vague during the first season, and the company falls apart, Micheal steps in to keep it, and the family together.
George Micheal, his son, is his conscience and the person who convinces him that his family is worth keeping around. His sister is generally smarter than the rest of the family, but hides it behind her vanity most of the time while she struggles to make her marriage to her clueless husband work. Her clueless husband is therapist turned actor with a knack for Freudian slips. His brother JOB is a magician whose own Magicians Alliance has black-listed him from working in the industry because he gave away a trick in a hopeless effort to win his father's affection. Buster is a momma's boy to a mother who barely qualifies as a mother. Together, they're the most dysfunctional family ever.
What really makes the show work are the individual scenes. Lines are delivered and countered with gut-splitting comedic timing and clever writing that isn't normally found in the sitcom genre. It's not a family friendly show, content (almost entirely in the form of dialogue) is often pushing the boundaries of what censors will allow, but usually what comes to the screen is more subtle than other sitcoms as well.
If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor, and buy this show.
What's great about it: sardonic wit, comedic timing, quirky characters, perfect chemistry--the best sitcom you never saw
What's not so great: Only that it got cancelled before it's time
