Were did the live chicken come from?

5 of 5 stars for the comedy The Hangover. Let's see, take four guys (one to get married in two days), add Las Vegas, some drugs, shake well and you end-up the next day in a hotel suite with strippers, a tiger, a trashed room, a missing mattress, a missing front tooth, a live chicken and a missing bride groom. What's the problem? Noone remembers what happened--nothing, nada, zip. This movie is about the quest to learn what happened last night--and to find Douggie (the bride groom). The three remaining guys set-out to unwind the nights events, including a trip to a wedding chapel, discovery of a new wife (former stripper) for one of the three guys and a visit to the home of Mike Tyson (the boxer). This is a very funny movie with extreme moments and odd ball surprises. Two buckets of nuked popcorn are a must for this funny movie! Well made, extremely well written (who thinks of this stuff??) and really fun to watch. OK, a spoiler (not): Where did the live chicken in the hotel room come from??? They never explained that one. I highly recommend this movie; however, it is for mature audiences, lots of adult stuff. Oh, the infant found in their hotel room was a professionally trained stunt baby, so noone was hurt.
What's great about it: Extremely funny with great situations, some real surprises
What's not so great: The Blu-Ray extras are few and not too interesting
I would recommend this to a friend!

The big-screen adaptation of Josie and the Pussycats comes to DVD in two very different packages. This particular edition offers a PG-edit of the film. The disc contains a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1. English subtitles are accessible. The extensive supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by directors Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont as well as producer Marc Platt, three music videos, the theatrical trailer, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, and production notes. The other package for this title contains the original PG-13 cut, and also contains a widescreen transfer that was seen in theaters. This is a good disc, but the full-frame transfer makes it far less appealing than it could be.

4 of 5 stars for the comic turned movie Josie and the Pussycats. Yes, I admit it, I like this movie. Yes, I should seek professional help. This is a cute, dumb and funny movie. Take three girls (all pretty, 2/3s dumb) who form a rock band. Add a manager and record company out to control the minds of everyone in the world. Lots of great visuals, glitsy, flashy and just plain fun things (inside their plane is covered with sponsor ads). It is just plain fun. Shout-out to Tara Reid who takes the role of "dumb blonde" to new levels. Rosario Dawson plays the one pussycat with a brain. While Parker Posey plays Josie. I do recommend this movie; it is OK for the whole family. Its just fun and entertaining. Please pass the popcorn.
What's great about it: Its fun, funny and entertaining; great visuals and rapid action

Don't sleep; they take you when you sleep.

4 of 5 stars for the sci-fi movie Invasion. This movie is a variation of the "bodysnatcher's" genre. As with other movies of this type, those who have been "snatched" move slowly, calmly and peacefully. In this movie, that is how "they" tell those who are infected and those who are not yet infected. OK, a strange new infection is brought to earth from space. Once a person is infected (passes from person to person) they turn into these peaceful slow moving zombies. The key to the infection is to not sleep! The lead character is played by Nicole Kidman who does a great job. Interesting to watch how she learns to move about in the community of the zombies without being discovered. Usually zombie movies are low budget "B" movies; this one has high production values, looks great, and is well crafted. Call it an "A" class zombie movie. Minimal violence. This is a good movie and well worth watching. The Blu-Ray has a good selection of additional contents. I do recommend this movie.
What's great about it: Nicole Kidman is strong in the lead role
What's not so great: Typical zombie movie though with higher production values

"I will find you and I will kill you"

4 of 5 stars for the action movie Taken and shout-out for Liam Neeson in the lead role. Neeson plays a retired spy, Maggie Grace plays Neeson's daughter. The daughter and her girlfriend leave on a trip across Europe against the better judgement of her dad (Neeson). They barely land in Paris when they are kidnapped by slave traders. With few clues, Daddy goes to Paris to recover his daughter. Simple plot idea, extremely well executed (hence my shout-out to Neeson). This is a violent and tough movie; Neeson's body count is around 50 and most with graphic and quick kills. Don't shoot at him, you'll only make him mad! Impressive how he follows from clue to clue. If you don't mind the violence and the graphic underworld plot, it is a great movie. I do recommend it and will watch it again in the future.
What's great about it: Liam Neeson's outstanding acting as the lead
What's not so great: High body count with graphic details

A dirty gritty Vietnam War movie
on December 28, 2009

4 of 5 stars for the Vietnam war movie Rescue Dawn. This is the story of an American pilot shot down over Laos early in the war before it was common knowledge that the USA was bombing in Laos. This is a tough, gritty, hard movie. Not alot of fun; but, a solid story (based on the life of German-born Dieter Dengler). The story is heavy but true, the action gut-wrenching. The strength and determination of Dengler was impressive. The movie was well created with realistic settings (mostly filmed in Thailand). Yes, I do recommend this movie, but, make sure you are ready for a 2+ hour heavy war movie. BTW, shout-out to actor Christian Bale who played Dengler; no matter what, that must have been a tough movie to make and the personal stuff he went thru to make it...well, wow!
What's great about it: Very well made movie, based on a true story
What's not so great: Realistic settings and action lead to a difficult movie to watch; gut-wrenching

You'll be surprised at who killed her

4 of 5 stars for the suspense thriller I Know Who Killed Me. Lindsay Lohan stars in this movie about a crazed guy who like to kill people. Lohan is one of his victims, but, she has a story to be told--who killed her. She returns to her life as a different person. Yeah, a bit confusing, but, interesting. A well made movie with a good plot. It keeps you guess right til the end. A big surprise twists the last 20% of the movie into something very unexpected. This movie is loaded with adult content and images, some very graphic scenes that are not for the weak of stomach. A good movie, well worth the watching. The Blu-Ray was lacking in extra contents compared to other movies.
What's great about it: Interesting plot with unexpected twists, well made movie
What's not so great: Graphic scenes and adult contents

A tribute to the Sinbad movies
on December 26, 2009

4 of 5 stars for the ah ah sci-fi? action? fantasy movie Army of Darkness. I first looked at the cover art and read the liner notes and thought "here we go with a real-B movie, sigh". I started watching and it was funny and interesting. Watching the Blu-Ray I was really impressed with the image quality--super sharp and clear, it looked almost like video rather than film. So early-on, I'm thinking this is a spoof movie, but no, it was a straight fantasy/comedy movie. Then it hit me! This is a tribute to the Ray Harryhousen movie (Sinbad). Then I noticed this movie has everything from stop-action creatures, alot of rubber suits and alot of real models of creatures. Yeah, some CG, but not much. It really has the look and feel of the old Sinbad movies.
The plot is of a "S-mart" sales guy getting transported to the 1300's to fight against Deadites and recover an artifact book. Bruce Campbell did an outstanding job in the lead role. This movie was a pleasure to watch. Stupid comedy in places, old-style effects, silly quest and it is all fun fun fun! This is on my watch-it-again list.
What's great about it: Fun fun fun to watch, classical style effects

Ah go jump off of a bridge! YES!

3 of 5 stars for the comedy movie Yes Man staring Jim Carrey.Yes, it was funny and had some great situations. In general, I don't much like Carrey's work, this one was OK. Imagine a cult that teaches its members to say Yes to everything. "Can I borrow lots of money?" "Yes". Well, that is the basic idea of the movie. How much trouble can a person get into by always saying yes? Ah, go jump off a bridge; Yes. That leads to a bungie jump from a local bridge. Zooey Deschanel plays Carrey's girlfriend and is very impressive (and cute). This movie is easy on your brain, fun to watch and well worth the time and efforts. So, did I like the movie? Ah ah ah, YES. Do I recommend it? Ah, YES. Will I give you money? Ah ah NO WAY.
What's great about it: Funny and easy to watch, Carrey is better than usual
What's not so great: Kinda dumb plot with simplistic thinking

Older, smarter, a bit-slower, but still Indie
on December 24, 2009

5 of 5 stars for the action-adventure movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Really nice to have Indiana Jones back after two decades. Older, smarter and a bit slower, but, still the Indy we all know and love. The movie opens with the Russians (oh, we're in the 1950's now) trying to break-into Area 51 to recover an artifact. They've brought Jones as a hostage and to find the artifact in the storage warehouse. From there, we're on a typical Indie quest. I can tell you that there is a Crystal Skull (or two) involved. We do see the return of Marian (Karen Allen) as Indie's lost girlfriend. There are other surprises in this movie.
Expertly crafted and on par with all three previous Indie movies.Richly photographed, great sets, great action and fun chases. I have added this movie to my list of favorites and highly recommend it! This is a two bag-of-popcorn feature movie! Let's hope for more adventures in the future.
What's great about it: Ford is back as Indiana Jones, action, fights, exciting action

Director Steven Spielberg's A.I.: Artificial Intelligence was not only a box-office disappointment, it also did something that his previous films have rarely or never done -- it alienated the audience and divided the critics. Perhaps with the release of the film onto DVD, Spielberg's misunderstood science fiction fairy tale will find a more receptive audience. Dreamworks Home Entertainment has released the film as a two-disc special edition, in either its preferred letterboxed version (1.85:1 enhanced) or in a pan-and-scan format. The image on the letterboxed version is excellent throughout. The soft smoky interiors of the first part of the film have a nice auburn glow to them, which nicely contrasts the sultry colors that take over for the second part. There is no evidence of color bleeding or flaring up and the image is consistently balanced. Many scenes, which are filmed purposefully dark, still manage to keep a richness and depth that is difficult to replicate outside of a movie theater. The disc also comes equipped with various soundtrack options, including an English language 5.1 track, 2.0 Dolby Surround, and a 5.1 DTS option. The first two tracks are vigorous and active, though always keeping the dialogue clear. The first disc contains the film itself and a short ten-minute documentary on the making and origins of the film. But it's with the second disc that one finds a plethora of supplemental material. The disc contains numerous mini-documentaries on all stages of A.I.'s production, from its initial planning stage with Stanley Kubrick to its final release. There are some nice interviews with actors Jude Law, Haley Joel Osment, and others. Also of interest are the interviews with the storyboard artists, production designers, and the many special effects technicians from Stan Winston's factory of wonders and Lucasfilm's ILM studio. The disc also contains a couple of theatrical trailers, a multitude of storyboard sketches, production photographs, some interesting interviews with sound designer Gary Rydstrom and composer John Williams, and much more.

Great photography, dull story

2 of 5 stars for the sci-fi movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Frankly, I'd give this movie a 1 of 5 stars, however, it is really well made with great photography and clean special effects, so it gets a 2 of 5. Set in the future where a company made a mechanical boy. The kid who played the robot did a good job. The story is insanely dull and excessively long at 2h25min. If they cut about 1h from the movie it would be OK and get a higher rating. Sorry, I do not recommend this movie; BTW, I lasted 1h30 before quitting for something else.
What's great about it: Great photography and well crafted
What's not so great: A really dull story that moves very slowly
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
