Does nothing for infants to toddlers
on April 5, 2008

This movie displays shapes and then their names and repeats this process over and over. It says it is for 1 month + and the only way I can see that being true is with the things moving on-screen and the music, your 1 month old may watch it, but that's because they can't move on their own. I have seen parents try this movie on children of several ages (all under 1 year old) and not one child that could move sat and watched and those that couldn't whined for something else to do. Not one of baby Einstein's best.
What's great about it: Tries to teach shapes in a way that will amuse young children.
What's not so great: Young children can care less
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I got this DVD in a box set for Baby Einstein, which made it kinda good because after watching it, I have never touched it again. This movie consists of the creator Julie Aigner-Clark saying a verb: "crawl", "sit", "stand", etc., and then a few scenes of children doing the action. I thought it would be interesting because my child is just now learning to stand independently yet nothing about this movie is entertaining or educational. In fact, he only way a young child would even sit through 5 minutes of this is if they are intrigued by other children. That's it. I understand that Baby Einstein wants to educate young children, but this is by no way an effective means.
What's great about it: Interesting theme
What's not so great: Young children can care less

Best live action movie ever filmed!

Seven Samurai is a movie about a rag-tag group of veteran warriors, an apprentice, and a man who's only wish is to be a samurai who join together out of the goodness of their hearts to protect a simple farming village from the yearly attack of a bandit gang when the lord of the land will not. I have been and continue to be a practicer of martial arts, specifically Iaijutsu (sword techniques) and this movie more than any other exemplifies the way of the warrior in which he will lay down his life in order to protect someone who cannot. I am a grown man and I can honestly say that there is no other movie I have ever seen that can make me cry openly at its ending. This is a must own for any person familiar or interested in black and white films, Japanese culture, Japanese martial arts, or anyone interested in the way of the samurai, not to mention anyone interested in a phenomenal movie that will remain with you always. I first saw this movie late at night when I was early in my teen years, I waited endlessly when for a quality version of this movie came out and with Criterion, that desire is fulfilled.
What's great about it: Dramatic story, perfect actors for perfect roles, heart-wrenching emotion. A feat of storytelling!
What's not so great: Slightly lengthy but worth every second

Princess Mononoke arrives on DVD in a widescreen anamorphic format (1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio enhanced for 16 x 9 television) and these audio tracks: Japanese (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Dolby Digital 5.1), and French (Dolby Digital 2.0), with English subtitles. The DVD is dual-layered with an astonishingly clear and crisp picture that really brings out the animated magic of the film. Sound quality is consistently good with particularly clear and bass-resonant music, particularly during the action scenes. Special features are limited to theatrical trailers and a "making of" featurette. A glossy insert in the cover of the plastic DVD case lists the chapter index.

Hands down my favorite animated movie. Ever!
on March 30, 2008

I had never heard of this movie until about 3 years ago when I woke up at 3 a.m. in front of the tv after a long school week. I saw an anime with English subtitles in front of me and decided to continue watching because I was fond of anime and it seemed interesting, little did I know that I was watching one of the single best films ever created. Within the first 10 minutes every thought of sleep left me and I was engrossed in it until the end at which point I went out the next day with quarters and dimes to buy it anywhere I could. Over the next 18 hours I actually watched it another 5 times because I could simply not get my fill. It is a movie focusing on Man's inability to realize his actions until he's almost too late, even going to such extremes so as to kill a god for the immortality of one, even if thousands must perish. This movie centers around the premise of balance and conservation, something we can all learn from. This is a movie every person should see once, if not more.
What's great about it: Gripping and moving story, excelent animation and voice acting, a movie everyone should see at least once
What's not so great: Only that it is not longer

Still a must for any FLCL fan

As I said in my review for the 2nd album, I bought this very much discounted and with the 2nd one which made this a good buy for me, but others may not be so lucky or feel the same way. This album does not bring that much more to the table in terms of music but it does feature dialogue which I have to assume is from the show as the voices are similar. I say assume because it is in Japanese and I do not understand anything other than English and some rudimentary Russian. If you do understand Japanese, then this may intrigue you, but for many people, this would not. If you're buying this stand-alone, make sure you know what you're buying. This is the 3rd album from the show and there really isn't that much left in terms of accoustics that has not already been brought in the 2nd one, let alone the first.
What's great about it: Features Dialogue from what I presume is the show
What's not so great: Many people do not understand Japanese

Not as great as the first album but still a keeper

Like the first one, I bought this album as soon as I laid eyes on it (including the 3rd). Fortunately it was at a store closing so I payed only about $8 for both of them. If you ever get a chance to buy the 2nd and 3rd together for the price of 1, do so! Otherwise you may be slightly dissapointed. This album features some rehashes of tracks on the previous album, which are in themselves very good, but they are still old songs and may not have that surprise the 1st album did. If you love the show, or just The Pillows, still a good buy, but might not be quite worth the $13 at retail price.
What's great about it: Remixes or old songs and some new ones
What's not so great: Doesn't have the hook of the first one

Awesome Soundtrack from an Awesome band,
on March 28, 2008

FLCL (Fooly Cooly/Furi Kuri) was one of the first anime shows I ever saw and it made a huge impact on me, including what it meant to have a soundtrack that reflected the atmosphere of the show. When I first saw this album released, I bought it immediately and never looked back. Here I am, about 5-6 years later and I still pop this baby into my computer or car sterio. This cd is a great buy, whether you saw the anime or not, because it is done exclusively by The Pillows who are a Japanese rock band that can belt out tunes like no one's business, yet can rarely be found at a normal retailer. Buy this now if you ahve any incling!
What's great about it: The Pillows, complete songs from the series
What's not so great: Can be hard to find
