The Rebirth of Southern Rock
on January 4, 2009
Posted by: guitargirl
from Denver, CO
It's the return of Southern rock like you've never heard it before. This isn't Lynyrd Skynyrd 2.0. Kings of Leon have created the perfect blend of hooks and substance to make this one of the best albums of the year. Every track is different, and while some are better than others there isn't a single one that I skip. Caleb Followill's voice has the type of jagged soulfulness most artists only dream of. Listen to "Manhattan" for one of the catchiest hooks not involving vocals. There is a distinctly dark mood throughout the entire album that penetrates deeper than most modern rock albums even attempt. A really great record from a great American band. Pick it up.
What's great about it: Use Somebody, Manhattan, and I Want You are stand out tracks

Jack Johnson's best album
on March 8, 2008
Posted by: guitargirl
This is one of my all-time favorite albums. Jack Johnson has an astonishing ability to transfer you to some beautful tropical beach in under four minutes. These songs are sweet and simple, but not cliched. The best tracks are Better Together and No Other Way. Definite must have for any music fan.

Confusing, but intense
on March 4, 2008

This movie was much more exciting than I expected it to be. Although some of the legal jargon went over my head, the fact that I was engrossed in something that I know very little about was a testament to this great film. Excellent performances all around.

A Fun Movie
on February 25, 2008
Posted by: guitargirl
This movie falls into the category of being so bad that it's actually quite fun to watch. My friends and I were actually cheering out loud at some of the hilariously contrived rah-rah action lines that Samuel L. Jackson had, but don't get me wrong, he kicks a**. This movie is very original (in concept if not in execution) and the action is great. I recommend this movie to people who want something fun and campy to watch in a group, just know, Oscar winner it ain't.
What's great about it: Great to watch with friends when you're in the mood for a laugh
What's not so great: Pretty terrible script and acting

Worth Every Penny

Across The Universe made me love Beatles music again. Now, that's not to say that I ever disliked it, The Beatles paved the way for everything that came after them and were astonishingly gifted musicians, but sometimes you feel oversaturated with their songs (especially with grating covers showing up in commercials). Hearing these versions of their songs sung by Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther McCoy, and T.V. Carpio, to name a few, reminded me of the timelessness of the Beatles music. Don't miss the heart-breaking cover of Let It Be in the first third of the film.
What's great about it: brilliantly re-worked Beatles songs, great actors/singers
What's not so great: On the long side

Beautiful album

The National has quickly become one of my favorite bands. They mix sad and sweet lyrics with innovative rhythms and melodies for a product that is unlike anything available today in popular music. They deserve much more publicity than they've gotten, which will hopefully as more and more people notice their newest release "Boxer". Buy this cd if you are a fan of indie music in the vein of Spoon and Mike Doughty.

The first season of Supernatural introduces brothers Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jenson Ackles), who, following the violent and otherworldly death of their mother, grew up hunting and killing malevolent paranormal entities with their father John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). While Sam opted to attend college, Dean continued to hunt. The arrangement, while far from ideal, worked relatively well until John mysteriously disappears, leaving Dean no choice but to find Sam and convince him to return to hunting. As they travel the country, the brothers fight -- and kill -- the monsters of urban legend.

A Weekly Horror Fix
on February 19, 2008
Posted by: guitargirl
For anyone who's a fan of the horror movie genre this show serves up an hour a week of excellently crafted horror stories. I enjoyed this season of the show more than the second, because the episodes were better able to stand alone. Generally, I enjoy shows with season long arcs and continuing story lines, but what I inititally liked about this show was that while there were threads that continued, you were given a completely new "case" each week. Making the episodes more like mini-movies.

This disc contains all 13 episodes from the first season of the teen drama Dawson's Creek. Each episode is presented in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include commentary from series creator Kevin Williamson, a featurette about the show, and a special look at the first season. This is a great release for any fan of the series.

Startlingly sweet and genuine

Although the lives of the four teens that this show revolves around are much more eventful than those of most of the teens in the audience the problems that they capture are universal. Simply the way they portray the relationship between best friends Dawson (James Van der Beek) and Joey (Katie Holmes) and they way it evolves when hormones kick in will resonate with anyone who was ever a teen with a best friend of the opposite gender. Highly recommended for anyone who likes any of the following shows: Veronica Mars, One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Everwood, Gilmore Girls, Friday Night Lights, and any other above par teen shows. (Although, you should still check it out even if you don't consider yourself a fan of any of the aforementioned shows)

Excellent Spanish film
on February 17, 2008
Posted by: guitargirl
I thought this movie was pure unadulterated fun. It's really the only Spanish language film I've seen that wasn't an "art" film. All comparisions to Ocean's 11 aside this movie is a top notch heist flick. And, for any Veronica Mars fans out there, look for Julie Gonzalo (Parker in the third season) as a nanny. Who knew she could speak Spanish?
What's great about it: Witty writing, good acting, pure entertainment
What's not so great: Almost too similar to Ocean's 11

Excellent album
on February 16, 2008

This is one of my favorite albums. Doughty is an extremely gifted lyricist. Every song on this album is catchy. You might recognize some of the tracks from TV shows, like "Looking At the World From The Bottom of A Well" from Grey's Anatomy and "I Hear the Bells" from Veronica Mars. Excellent guest performance by Dave Matthews on "Tremendous Brunettes". Recommended for fans of Dave Matthews.
What's great about it: Brilliant lyricist. Music has some Eastern-inspired aspects.
What's not so great: One religious track, wasn't expecting it.
