Good photo shop program for the price
on January 7, 2017
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
I've been using this program for several months now and mostly enjoy it, save for a few quirks here and there.
It has a lot going for it: the basic set up makes it very easy to use, with simple walk-through videos and a fairly easy to understand interface (but you do have to watch the videos once or twice to really understand all the commands). There are a lot of nice options for making your pictures look great, which is really the bottom line. It's easy to correct color, light and even facial expressions. It also includes an organizer, which is expected from any photoshop these days. The "smart tags" feature is also really cool--it can sort pictures by person, trees, setting (beach, mountains, etc) or even animals in the pictures. That is probably the most unique thing I've seen in a photo organizer.
There's not a lot of bad, but the few nitpicky things I found are that it's still a little complicated and could be even more user-friendly with a few tweaks. If you wait a bit between uses you'll find yourself "stuck" and wondering what to do next, then having to go back to watch a video....which is another drawback. I get that no one does "manuals" anymore, but it's still nice to have one to refer to from time-to-time, and there isn't one here, which makes it a little frustrating. The "import" also takes a VERY long time, particularly if you have a lot of pictures.
Overall this is a great program that does the job for very little expense when compared to much more expensive programs.

Keep unwanted hair to a minimum with this Philips grooming tool. The waterproof design lets you use it in the shower, and eight attachments make this trimmer perfect for grooming different sections of the face. Okay product at a great price

For as much as this trimmer does it's a really great price. Unfortunately it only does a couple of things very well. Otherwise the functions are okay, but not as good as I would want them to be (regardless of price).
Pros: the number of attachments--this is an extremely versatile tool
Charges quickly and easily
The attachments are VERY easy to change--impressively so actually. And I was impressed with how secure they felt after changed them out.
The nose trimmer works very well
Cons: The shaver doesn't shave very closely at all. I felt like I was rubbing my face off and there were still large patches that were missed. I've never really used an electric shaver before so this could be on me, but I'm not really sure how....
The trimmer didn't seem to trim very evenly.
It's very noisy for a device like this
Overall this is a very versatile tool, unfortunately it doesn't do a great job for many of the tasks it's designed for.

Great replacement heads

These are replacement heads for the Philips Sonicare adaptive toothbrush (please see my review of that product). They're great toothbrush heads and the product works really well. The heads themselves feel sturdy and are very easy to replace (though you probably don't need to do it quite as often as the manufacturer recommends).

Very good (very expensive) toothbrush
on November 29, 2016
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
I've never used an electric toothbrush before, so this was a totally new experience for me. At first I HATED it--the vibrations shook all the toothpaste right off the brush, and it tickled my mouth like crazy. It did make my mouth feel really clean though, so I kept at it. I (thankfully) got used to the feeling very quickly and now I really enjoy using it.
The product itself has to be charged--it has a base that holds two toothbrush heads (which is great if you want to share the toothbrush without having to buy two bases) and charges the unit. The charge lasted a week while I traveled over the holidays and only one "dot" was gone, so it probably could have lasted a while longer.
There is an app you can download that's....interesting. It does offer tips and tells you if you're brushing wrong (too hard, too fast, etc). It syncs over bluetooth with your toothbrush, so you can now have yet another connected item. It's interesting, but doesn't feel wholly necessary, and makes getting ready in the morning take a bit longer. I've used it a couple of times out of curiosity, but my teeth feel pretty clean without it...The heads are easy to change and according to the manufacturer should be changed every three months, though that seems a little early to me, and can get a little expensive.
The biggest downside, of course, is the price. I'm not sure I can convince myself this toothbrush does that much better of a job than a $3 toothbrush from the drugstore. My back teeth (that have always given me problems) feel cleaner than they ever have, and the rest of my mouth feels great, so there's that. I tend to scrub and obviously it's not what they need.
Overall if you're in the market for an electric toothbrush you can't do better than this. It does a great job cleaning, and there are settings for whitening and plaque removal if you want to tailor it to a specific need.

Great sound and perfect for running!
on October 23, 2016
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
This is my first pair of wireless headphones, and so far they're fantastic. The set up is easy, and I like the available adjustments with the sound controls on the Bose app.
They tell you the charge left when you turn them on (which is very cool)--as long as you use the correct size cover they should fit very snugly in your ears with little to no movement, even though they are a little bulkier than other headphones. The sound quality is totally worth it though. The added heartbeat monitor is a bonus. I use these while running and they are almost perfect for that purpose. They're NOT noise cancelling, and using them for running that is important since you need to be able to hear outside noise.
I've also used them while mowing and can still hear with the volume raised a slight bit.
Being wireless the clip is super important, as I'd be very upset if I lost these. You can use the clip to attach them to your clothes and I highly recommend doing that, though if you're forgetful like me remind yourself to detach them before taking off your shirt!
These are fantastic wireless headphones with the sound quality you'd expect from Bose.

sleek looking wi-fi system that works well
on October 23, 2016
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
This is a cool looking wi-fi system designed to extend your current wi-fi set-up while looking really good doing it. I loved the fact that I could just set these on a shelf in separate rooms and have them blend in like decor.
Set up out of the box is easy--with one odd caveat that there is not a public network right away. I've had many Netgear routers and I believe this is the first that doesn't already have it set up. You can use netgear's convenient dashboard to set it up pretty quickly if you do want that (though I see the reason for not including them right away, as you'll want to password protect it immediately since this router has such long range).
Overall it's been perfect for our current two-story house, with a unit on each floor. I've had this for a few weeks now and it definitely does the trick. It's especially nice that it runs my smart TV, notebook and roku receiver upstairs with no apparent loss of signal.
The range is spectacular (it's nice to sit on my back deck with my laptop and get speeds as fast as I do next to my router)--I had to walk a few hundred feet from my house before the signal was lost.
If you want a solid wi-fi extender that is also stylish (and doesn't resemble a giant spider) then this product is perfect for you.

Probably the best phone I've ever owned
on October 23, 2016
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
Since I started buying smart phones I've always had an android. I have just preferred the flexibility (and ability to upgrade memory) that's offered through android. Plus, earphone jacks are okay with me.
I was sent this phone to test. My current phone is a Samsung Galaxy S7--I've been very happy with it, though I've had the same issues with it that I had with my last Galaxy S4 (locks up occasionally, sometimes it gets VERY warm).
Upon opening the box for the Pixel I was very impressed with the looks. The screen is slightly smaller than the S7's (see attached photo), but is crystal clear. The phone itself is sleek and light, with a glass portion on the back and a fingerprint sensor (more on that later). Overall it looks good.
Set up is a breeze if you've been on android to this point and performed regular back-ups. You can tether it to your current phone with the included wire, or you can import your data directly from your back-ups. It does take a while depending on the amount of data. Mine ran overnight over my wi-fi, but everything was ready to go upon wake-up. You can use the phone while you're waiting with no issues. When set-up is complete all of your contacts, apps, etc will be there and ready to go.
One thing that's definitely better than the S7 --it's easier to use the pixel--finding things in the settings and figuring out how to use them is much simpler (a thing I was always aggravated by with my galaxy). The controls are intuitive, and the online help is actually helpful if you get stuck at any point. Something as seemingly easy as setting the ringtone was a chore on my S7, but super-simple on the Pixel.
The Pixel is the most responsive phone I've ever used. One quick slide up with your thumb and all your apps are right there. They are very easy to move, with the usual "hold down and slide" method.
The fingerprint sensor is part of set up and is also very easy to use. I believe it's optional, but it's very quick and easy to sign in with the Pixel using the sensor. At first I thought it was awkwardly located in the back of the phone but it turns out Google is smarter than I am as it's perfect. One touch sign-in is super easy to use. The only issue I can see having is finding a phone cover with a hole there in order to keep using it.
It's a very clear phone. In the calls I've made so far I've been able to hear very well, whether using the speaker phone or holding it up to my ear.
Bluetooth set up with everything I use it with has been easy. It's essentially push button connect. I've not had an issue yet with a connection being lost.
There have been two software updates that have been unobtrusive to this point, happening in the background and only requiring a restart when completed.
I imported roughly 60 apps and haven't had an issue with any of them. The icons are small but easy to see, and they're all the same size so the display stays great looking. Google play is already installed along with a host of google apps such as photos and maps all located in smart places, but easy to move if desired.
I've never owned an iphone so I have no idea how well Siri works, but the Google Assistant works very well. It's the first assistant I've used, but so far it's answered every question, pulled up directions, told me about traffic, etc, every time I've asked. It's a weird thing to be wondering something then realize you can just ask your phone and find out the answer right away.
The camera is the best I've ever used on a phone. The pictures are fantastic, and the settings are super easy to use.
I left a dozen apps open the first day to test the battery, and so far it's amazing. I still had 30% left with all those apps open after about 12 hours.
As I mentioned I've never owned an iphone so I imagine this is the closest you can get without having to be a slave to apple. Of course, you may end up becoming a slave to google since it definitely makes life easier to integrate the phone with a google account. After you sign in it automatically updates with your google information, imports your calendar, ties into your photo account, etc. With the new google home assistant you can really integrate everything in your life. Which is a little scary I suppose, but also very cool and convenient.
If you've been holding out for "the next big thing" to upgrade your phone then don't wait any longer, because this is it.

A good device, depending on your situation
on October 5, 2016
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
I have been testing this product for a little over a month now, and finally had the chance to take it on a long trip this past weekend.
The good:
• The screen is gorgeous. It's easy to read and has a bright, crisp display.
• The GPS has some innovative features such as showing you a display of the signs at interstate exits and giving an example of what the exit looks like. I had not seen this on a GPS before and found it to be very handy.
• I LOVE the “exit” feature on the GPS—it is extremely handy to get a list of restaurants at upcoming road exits (and it will list every exit on your trip). We were able to plan meals on this trip very easily by finding a place we wanted to eat at an upcoming exit and adding it as a “via” point. This is a fantastic feature when traveling with adults, but it’s a must when traveling with children. Being able to tell my kids exactly where we were eating and exactly how long it would take to get there kept the “I’m hungry! How much longer?” cries to a minimum.
• The mount is much, much sturdier than it appears, and does a solid job holding the unit in place, even on bumpy roads. I tried both the dashboard and window mount and found the window mount to be very secure. It’s a large display, but centering it above my dashboard just below the rear view mirror worked perfectly for me.
• The front dash cam does a very good job, and can seemingly record for quite a bit of time (there is 32gb of storage on board, and most of that space is for recording). With the number of distracted drivers out there I’d been considering a dash cam anyway and this fits the bill as well as any, and it's nice that it's rolled into one device.
• The sound is good, and I was able to connect it to my phone without too much of an issue. (see below for more about the phone connectivity)
The not so good:
• The price. This is a lot of money for a device like this. When you consider you’ll likely want to add a dongle for the car monitoring ability, a rear-view camera (and installation) and the app you can easily push over $600 to get the most out of this device.
• The manual is not very much help for such a complicated machine. I’m pretty tech-savvy so I was able to work out how to use most everything, but my wife was very frustrated trying to figure some of it out
• The connections were of almost no help to me. This is almost more of a limitation of my car, but even with a higher-end stereo there is no front aux jack, so I was forced to use the FM transmitter. It worked fine, and is great when you’re in one place for an extended period of time, but it constantly needed to be adjusted on our road trip as local stations faded in and out.
• The GPS search function was not very helpful when searching for a specific address. I attempted to use it first for every address I was going to, but ended up switching to “classic” entry every time. It did work fine when conducting a search such as "Target" but it's a bit of a chore to have to switch back and forth.
• I believe I had everything connected correctly, but I had a difficult time with keeping the battery charged. We kept it connected the entire time so this wasn’t too big a deal, but it will not keep the current route if it shuts down due to the battery running out.
• It works as well as any other voice activated device, which is “meh”. Any voice activated device like this can be a chore to set up anyway, and this one seemed to have difficulty recognizing voice commands—possibly due to the distance I had to place it from the driver’s seat. I didn’t use it much since I usually had my kids in the car, and would have to yell the command which it still wouldn’t recognize since at least one of my kids would be yelling too.
Your mileage may vary:
• The phone feature worked fine, though I didn’t keep my phone connected as both my cars already have this feature. If you have an older car you will likely love it. Having texts read to you is extremely convenient as well (though the pronunciations of the phonetic speaker can be a bit hard to understand sometimes)
• The “entertainment” functioned fine as well, but uses your phone’s data. It doesn’t use much for streaming radio (such as Pandora) but do be aware it will add to your phone bill if your plan doesn’t cover this.
Overall this is a well-made first-generation device. For an “out of the gate” system like this it has the quirks you’d expect, but a great deal of functionality. It’s a device intended to fit certain situations, so those with cars from the last year or two may find that the functionality of this is redundant to many of their current car and phone features. If you have an older car, phone or any combination of the two, or a low end factory stereo you’ll get the most out of this…just be prepared to spend a bit more on top of it to get the absolute most out of it.
(note: I am putting "I would recommend this"...and I would, but it would honestly depend on the situation)

Works well, easy to set up
on July 18, 2016

The Linksys Max-Stream AC1900 wireless extender worked perfectly for my needs. I have a good router, but due to where it needs to be located I was having difficulty connecting to my network in my bedroom.
The product comes packaged well so that getting damaged during shipping is very unlikely. After unpacking set-up with your existing network is a breeze. I personally use the online (browser) set up as I own other Linksys systems and I know how easy the online set-up can be.
Once set-up is complete most devices should recognize your new network immediately. It should have a name similar to the network already set up. I was able to connect to the network quickly in the rooms my wi-fi had not previously reached. The speed was not quite as good as my regular router (It seemed to be about 2/3rds speed or so) but as this was much better than having NO coverage in that room I'm perfectly happy with it.
This is a product designed to fulfill a very particular need. If your need is coverage in an area of your home you previously had not been able to reach, then this is the product you need. It does it's job well.

This router is a beast!
on June 6, 2016
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
I received the Linkysys EA9500 router as part of Best Buy's tech insider network for my honest review.
First thing to know is that this router is very large and is not designed to be mounted. You will need a fairly sizeable area (it's larger than our Wii U)somewhere safe to place it. If you have small children like I do they will think this thing looks super cool (like a light up spider!) and they WILL want to play with it.
It is packaged well with lots of form-fitted styrofoam padding that the router sits in snugly. All of the antennas are pre-installed so no worries there. There is also a power cord, data cable and cd-rom, along with very brief set-up instructions.
Set up is a breeze. As soon as it's plugged in and connected with the data wire a number of new networks will be available, all with the name of the router and varying connection types. Make sure you have the instruction sheet handy as the initial network password is listed on it. I suggest doing this part on a tablet or laptop, as once it connects the device will be directed to Linksys website for the rest of the set-up. This part is very easy and gives a step-by-step walk-through on how to set up a Linksys account (or the opportunity to log in if you already have an account). The website allows the connections to be renamed, passwords to be set for both connections and the router, and various other more technical settings (channels and what not) to be adjusted.
The speeds are very fast (I was able to achieve faster than advertised in most of my tests--I'm rated for 50 down from AT&T U-verse and constantly achieved 60 on my connections). The range is long, as I was able to exit my apartment and go upstairs, downstairs and into the parking lot a considerable distance before not seeing the networks at all (do NOT skip the security step, and DO set a difficult but easy to remember password--the security is the best you can get for a consumer router, but it's still only as good as your password). I suggest hiding the guest connection if you're in an apartment or closely built home. but you can add a password to the guest connection as well.
The ONLY issue I've had is that the 5 Ghz band would randomly drop and need to be reconnected. I am fairly certain I need to get in adjust the channels I'm using for that, as several others reported this as an issue and fix. I've been fine on the 2.4 Ghz connection though. At any given time I have roughly a dozen devices connected--2 gaming systems, 2 phones, 2 rokus, a television, 3 tablets and a laptop (and that's probably not everything). Testing netflix through the rokus and my laptop I've had no issues at all with buffering or loss of signal. The same with youtube through six different devices. In almost every case the videos (either cartoons for my kids or HD movie trailers to test the speed) were finished loading well before I finished watching.
Overall this thing is a beast, both in size and specs. It is the perfect device if you need a strong signal for a large area, or have a lot of devices connected at once like I do. If you're thinking about cutting the cord and still want a great streaming signal (assuming your ISP is up to speed) then you can't go wrong with this router.
