Artisan gives Reservoir Dogs the treatment it richly deserves on this tenth anniversary Special Edition. The film is offered in both a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and an inferior full-frame image. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround, and DTS Surround. Supplemental materials include a variety of scene specific commentaries from people involved in the production as well as major film critics, featurettes about the actors, the original theatrical trailer, and a variety of quirky small extras like a reenactment of the famous torture scene using only the Reservoir Dogs action figures.

Martin Scorsese's brutal character study incisively portrays the true rise and fall and redemption of middleweight boxer Jake La Motta, a violent man in and out of the ring who thrives on his ability (and desire) to take a beating. Opening with the spectacle of the over-the-hill La Motta (Robert De Niro) practicing his 1960s night-club act, the film flashes back to 1940s New York, when Jake's career is on the rise. Despite pressure from the local mobsters, Jake trusts his brother Joey (Joe Pesci) to help him make it to a title bout against Sugar Ray Robinson the honest way; the Mob, however, will not cave in. Jake gets the title bout, and blonde teenage second wife Vickie (Cathy Moriarity), but success does nothing to exorcise his demons, even as he channels his rage into boxing. Alienating Vickie and Joey, and disastrously gaining weight, Jake has destroyed his personal and professional lives by the 1950s. After he hits bottom, however, Jake emerges with a gleam of self-awareness, as he sits rehearsing Marlon Brando's On the Waterfront speech in his dressing room mirror: "I coulda been a contender, I coulda been somebody." Working with a script adapted by Mardik Martin and Paul Schrader from La Motta's memoirs, Scorsese and De Niro sought to make an uncompromising portrait of an unlikable man and his ruthless profession. Eschewing uplifting Rocky-like boxing movie conventions, their Jake is relentlessly cruel and self-destructive; the only peace he can make is with himself. Michael Chapman's stark black-and-white photography creates a documentary/tabloid realism; the production famously shut down so that De Niro could gain 50-plus pounds. Raging Bull opened in late 1980 to raves for its artistry and revulsion for its protagonist; despite eight Oscar nominations, it underperformed at the box office, as audiences increasingly turned away from "difficult" films in the late '70s and early '80s. The Academy concurred, passing over Scorsese's work for Best Director and Picture in favor of Robert Redford and Ordinary People, although De Niro won a much-deserved Oscar, as did the film's editor, Thelma Schoonmaker. Oscar or no Oscar, Raging Bull has often been cited as the best American film of the 1980s.

Stanley Kubrick's Vietnam war opus Full Metal Jacket is available as part of the Stanley Kubrick collection from Warner Bros. Featuring a digital master from restored elements and a soundtrack newly remastered in Dolby Digitial 5.1, this title looks and sounds great. The only qualm, and it is a rather major one, is the format of the film itself. It is unfortunately presented in full screen, not the original widescreen format many DVD lovers have become accustomed to. As for bonus materials, the title is on the skimpy side, offering only the original theatrical trailer, scene access, and language choices in English and French. Subtitles are also available in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

One of the most influential and popular films of the 1990's finally gets the DVD treatment it deserves on this fantastic two-disc set from Miramax. Video and audio quality are both stellar: the new anamorphically-enhanced widescreen transfer shows off the cinematography in all its colorful, kitschy glory and the stereo soundtracks (DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1) dish up a punchy, crystal-clear soundtrack that is guaranteed to give the stereo speakers a workout. Pulp Fiction also offers a staggering array of extras guaranteed to keep film fans occupied for hours on end. First up is a subtitle trivia track that replaces the usual commentary track. Some fans might be disappointed that they don't get to hear Tarantino's enthusiastic musings in audio form but this exhaustive trivia track makes up for this by supplying every bit of minutiae that a fan could want to know: it covers everything from the film's inspirations to on-the-set stories to explanations of the many symbols and references used in the film. There is also a fantastic new documentary that uses interviews old and new and a variety of background footage to create a slickly-edited and fast-paced portrait of the history and influence of Pulp Fiction. Fans will be pleased by the inclusion of deleted scenes that are set up with on-screen intros from Tarantino, video clips of Tarantino directing a pair of the film's scenes and the inclusion of the infamous Palme D'Or acceptance speech that features the director having to fend off a zealous heckler as he makes his remarks. Elsewhere, this special edition represents the critical response to Pulp Fiction with an episode of Siskel and Ebert devoted to the Tarantino phenomenon and a gallery of text articles that analyze the film. The package is rounded out with a great episode of the Charlie Rose Show that features Rose interviewing Tarantino at length, a production design featurette and a barrage of trailers and publicity material. In short, Miramax's special edition of Pulp Fiction is both the definitive edition of this film and a thorough primer on its enduring influence on the world of filmmaking.
