More than a few skeptical guffaws greeted the release of Sofia Coppola's 1999 directorial debut, The Virgin Suicides. Amid suspicion of nepotism and the inevitable dredging up of her infamous Godfather III performance, Coppola, who also wrote the script, surprised just about everyone by making an assured, lyrical film that captured the wistful quality of Jeffrey Eugenides' novel. The DVD release further confirms Coppola's achievement. Moreover, it offers a glimpse of two then-up-and-coming stars: Kirsten Dunst and Josh Hartnett. The widescreen anamorphic format (1.85:1 aspect ratio) nicely renders the film's warm colors and the dreamy look of its 1970s suburban setting, while the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound heightens the atmospheric soundtrack by Air and brings out such auditory details as the needle hiss that precedes songs like Heart's "Crazy on You." Unfortunately, the extras are somewhat skimpy: a photo gallery, theatrical trailer, music video (Air's "Playground Love"), and short making-of featurette. Although the featurette contains some of the usual fluff and flattery (plus there's a creepy James Woods talking about his "crush" on his director), it also shows Coppola's obvious passion for the material and her actors. Included are interviews with cast members (Dunst, Hartnett, Woods, and Kathleen Turner) as well as Eugenides and the director's father, Francis Ford Coppola, himself.
