Antoine Fuqua's The Replacement Killers gets the deluxe treatment on this Columbia/TriStar release. The disc offers a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while French, Spanish, and Portuguese soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Subtitles are available in all four of those languages as well as Chinese, Korean, and Thai. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Fuqua, a featurette on star Chow Yun-Fat, a making-of featurette, an alternate ending, deleted scenes, trailers, and filmographies. No matter what one thinks of the film, this is an excellent disc.

This movie is slightly better than it is generally given credit for. It is at least entertaining. My primary problem is that considering it's a story about a hitman coming to respect life, he kills way too many people meaninglessly.

If you like the graphic novels on which it's based or just graphic novels in general and can deal with the subtitles pick it up because it is an amazing adaptation.
What's great about it: Captures the spirit of the graphic novel
Phillip Noyce's political drama The Quiet American comes to DVD from Miramax with a widescreen transfer enhanced for 16 x 9 televisions. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and closed captions are accessible. A lot of people involved in the film provide insight on the feature-length audio commentary track: director Phillip Noyce; executive producer Sydney Pollack; producers Staffan Ahrenberg and William Horberg; co-writer Christopher Hampton; actors Michael Caine, Brendan Fraser, and Tzi Ma; and interpreter and advisor Tran An Hua. Other special features include an original featurette, anatomy of a scene, three book reviews of the source novel by Graham Greene, historical information about Vietnam on DVD-ROM, and trailers for other Miramax titles. This is a highly recommended DVD of an award-winning film.

I enjoyed the movie much more than I thought I would after reading the book. It is an excellent work by Graham Greene. The movie scared me initially because I did not think that Brendan Fraser could play the role of Pyle well and was right, but he did do much better than I expected. The adaptation changes the character a little bit and fits Fraser better (I do like the Pyle of the novel better though). However, Michael provides an amazing performance and although it is not dead on, it is as faithful an adaptation as is willing to be produced by Hollywood.
What's great about it: Excellent performance by Michael Caine
What's not so great: Brendan Fraser was poor casting choice.
