I had been wondering of what the hoopla was all about Cameron's latest movie, especially why a movie that broke almost all records and did not win the Oscar. Now I knew why.
First of all, let get to the best thing about the movie. The images are stunning, especially on Blu Ray. My daughter has always been a critics for why Blu since upconverting DVD is just as good. I showed her the movie and she uttered a simple word "WOW!" The rest as they said was history. :-)
Unfortunately, the story line is as flat to the point of CPR is needed. It was like watching a bad Western movie made for the 21st century. There was no challenge, no anticipation, not a little glimse of something to endure the three-hour-plus long movie. The CGI was fantastic, but it blurred the line of distinction between real versus virtual actors. The whole movie gave you that virtual feeling of FInal Fantasy, though it is best in the business to date, it's still virtual.
Bottom line is if you like the best of CGI with stunning images, go for it. And hope your bladder can endure the length of the movie.

I am always in favor of the Next Generation series versus other Star Trek series so my evaluation might sound bias.
This in my opinion was the best of the Next Generation movies (not including any TV epidose). The story line was solid. The acting of the Borg Queen and Captain Picard were absolute. DATA was as androidly as he could be, except the few scenes where the director had him behaving as a human. In this movie, the supporting casts of the crew was not concentrated on one character but rather the whole being used for the plot. I think this method actually helped to bring out the contrast between the dark side and the best of mankind as portraited by the Queen and Picard. The Blu-ray rendering was excellent with both video and sound. I didn't care much for the extras or other miscellaneous items in any movie so no opinion there. The only quip I have with the movie was the last scene where the Vulcan starship landed on Earth, come on, the people were standing no more than 50 feet from the fire blast of the descending ship. But as I stated above, this was a great film and nothing could not be forgiven.

To begin with, I had never read the book series, just watching the movies.
The movie set up was generally dark, in both the plot and cinematography. Cannot say much about the plot, but in term of cinematography, high definition came to the rescue bringing to life the minute details of the movie set. The content was unfortunately had to be squeezed by the time constrained of the movie, thus, first time watching was a real challenge to follow the story with all the special effects. I had to watch it twice and turned on the subtite to find out who was the half-blood prince and completely followed the movie. May be now, I better get the book series to prepare for the final two videos.
What's great about it: High definition helps with the dark scenes
This release contains the entire run of the BBC series Planet Earth, which was shot on revolutionary high-definition cameras over the course of five years, and utilized 40 cameramen in 200 locations. From the highest mountain peaks to the deepest river floors, Planet Earth sets out to capture on camera the most elusive creatures every known to humankind.

I had always wanted to buy this series since it first came out, but holding back due to the price of the admission. I am glad to finally made the plunge to the purchase. This is the best nature series that money can buy, great help with the sale price, in term of visual impact, content, sound, and of course, the British accent of the narrator.
The six Blu-ray discs proved once and for all that natural images belong in high definition. Do not buy the DVD, save your money and wait for a sale to get the Blu version. By the time I got to the last disc in the series, my visual processing power was completely overwhelmed with the spectacular images the company had put into the package. This is definitively a must have in the collection of anyone who would call him/herself video collector.
