Lord of the Rings: Conquest is a great of example of how you can set out to do something really cool, and completely screw it up.
Pandemic, the makers of Star Wars Battlefront, takes the helm on Conquest, which is bascially just Star Wars: Battlefront with Lord of the Rings skins and classes.
Lets start off with the singleplayer.
It should first be noted that you should not decide whether to buy this on the singleplayer. This game was made to be played online. There are 2 campaigns, the first is the good campaign, in which you will fight through about 7 different battles which last about 15-20 minutes each, depending on your skill level. After you complete the good storyline you can unlock the evil story.
The evil storyline is a very creative look into "What would of happened if Frodo didn't destroy the ring?" You'll play 6-7 different battles, in which your taking over middle earth.
During each of these campaigns you will fight the same exact enemies over and over, push the same exact buttons over and over, and pretty much have the exact same feeling throughout it all. At times you will have a chance to play a Hero, which is basically just a slightly buffed version of each class. (Gandalf > Mage, Aragorn > Warrior, Legolas > Archer, etc..) They have almost the exact same attacks and mechanics, but usually do a little more damage and have different visual effects.
Now for the multiplayer.
Let me start off by saying that the Mage class is SEVERELY overpowered. So much so, that people just stack mages on their team and win the game 75% of the time. It is very difficult to play the scout or warrior classes in MP simply because the mage and archer rule the battlefield. There are 3 different types of play modes...Team Deathmatch, Capture the Ring, and Conquest.
In conquest you capture different points to earn points. If you have played battlefront or battlefield, its the exact same thing.
Capture the Ring is just like Capture the Flag, you find the ring and take it back to your base.
While each mode is fun, its overshadowed by the fact that Multiplayer requires you to be extrememly skilled, thanks to the fact that the game features a horrible camera, and melee classes are so gimped.
Overall, i'd say you should only pick this one up if your just a die hard LOTR fans. The multiplayer is too generic to last long, and the singleplayer is too short to be worth 60 bucks.
6.0/10
What's great about it: Can play as the famous LOTR characters, good music
What's not so great: horrible graphics, very short, loads of physics problems, unbalanced classees

Mirror's Edge is the type of game that you MUST play...once...and then you can throw it away or w/e you want to do with it.
The idea is simple...you run, you climb on things, you jump. Simple concept, awesome finishing product...or so i thought.
When that awesome idea is put into a game that forces you to a set path, it is no longer what it set out to be. While this game is certaintly innovative, the mechanics would only TRULY work in an open world. The developers have made a nice game that you really do have to play atleast once, because it is something new, but they didn't think of what they could of done with it in the big picture.
The storyline is mediocre... your sister is framed for a murder, you have to find out why. The main story lasts about 3-4 hours, and after that you unlock Time Trials and Speedruns for each missions.
Basically your doing the same exact thing, no matter what mode your playing. And the entire time you're being told that you're free to run wherever you want, you're also being told to run a certain path.
6.9/10
What's great about it: Innovative, creative
What's not so great: Short story, bad story, not a whole lot to do after story.

I'll start by saying I was not a very big fan of the first game. I finished it, spat on the multiplayer, gave it a 6/10 and went on my way.
And while the multiplayer is still pretty horrible (excluding Horde mode) i was very surprised by the campaign.
The vague, empty storyline of the first game is drastically continued upon. The game touches on where the locust come from, why they are fighting, and even a nice little twist toward the end.
The story is just as nice on the human side. Jacinto, the last human stronghold, is under threat. Its up to Delta Squad to go into Locust territory and stop whatever it is that is sinking all the cities. On top of that, Dom's wife Maria is missing, and Delta squad is trying to find her. It adds a needed human touch the game.
The enviornments are awesome...much, much, MUCH, better then the first game. There is actually a sense of epicness and scope, something that the first game lacked.
That being said, the lead developer, Cliffy B, stated "Gears of War 2 will be bigger and more bad a** then the first one" And while thats true, its like comparing chocolate to sour milk. While I wouldn't exactly call Gears of War 2 "Bad a**" Its still a very nicely done game. Just stay away from the multiplayer, and its dreadful matchmaking system.
8.9/10
What's great about it: Graphics, story, combat
What's not so great: Loads of texture problems, LOTS of bugs.

When I first heard that Call of Duty 5 was not going to be developed by Infinity Ward (the creators of Call of Duty 1, 2, and 4) i died a little inside.... i knew that Treyarch would get their grubby hands on this awesome series and set the bar back that Modern Warfare raised.
And i was right...kind of...
This is indeed just another WW2 shooter....same story...same bad guys...same ending as the first, 2nd, and 3rd COD, as well as every other WW2 game.
That being said, its probably also the best WW2 game around, though, this late in the game, thats honestly not saying that much.
I finished the singleplayer campaign on hardcore in 4 hours. This game is SHORT. It has absolutly no replay value whatsoever. But you do get a nice reward for completing the game. You unlock Zombies. In this mode you try and defend a broken down house from waves of zombies. They grow in numbers and in strength the longer you survive. Its fun for the first 10 or 20 playthroughs, but after that it gets very boring.
The multiplayer is mediocre, and you should stick with CoD4 for that. The only reason i'd recommend this game to anyone is the online Co-Op campaign. But thats about it..
6.3/10
What's great about it: nice weapons, sound effects.
What's not so great: World War 2, repetative 'missions', length

This, in my opinion, is the best game i've ever played. As a huge RPG fan Mass Effect tickled me at how awesome and expansive the game is.
You play Commander Shepard, a man/woman who has been sent out on a mission to hunt down Saren, a rogue Spectre who threatens the galaxy.
During your massive trip through the galaxy you will encounter a suprising variation of enemies, as well as a MASSIVE variation of friendly characters, who each have their own unique dialogue, and side missions availible. How you interact with them can determine many things, such as the effect others will have on you, your reputation, and dialogue options.
I won't ruin the story, i'll just say that its one of, if not THE, best storyline in RPGs to date. Combat is slightly repetative, and vehicle combat is downright boring. I suggest being a hybrid Biotic/Commando for the most fun. The game is also really well done for each difficulty level. If your new to 3rd person shooters, i suggest you start on the easiest. If you've played shooters before i HIGHLY suggest playing on the hardest one availible. Not only will you unlock the next level after completing the game, but the challenge/rewards are better as well.
This is simply a must have for all xbox360/PC owners. Pick it up, you will not be disappointed.
What's great about it: Tons of choices, lots of side missions, great storyline.
What's not so great: Framerate issues, texture fading.

Do not be fulled by the amazing physics engine, Euphoria, that this game runs on. Seeing stormtroopers try and grab onto things while they are being hurled through the air is only fun for the first 10 minutes or so.
This game suffers from lack of varied enemies, a so-so story, and a VERY short playthrough.
Force Powers, while cool for a while, are limited and can get old fast. Every time you force push an enemy off a cliff, he falls the same. Every time you force lightning someone, it looks the same. Everything is the same.
The boss battles are stupidly easy, and are brought down even further with the cheesy 'button mash action sequences'.
In closing, its worth renting...because thats all it will take to be done with the game. Save thirty bucks, just go rent it.
What's great about it: Cool force powers
What's not so great: Repatative, easy, no variety.
