Good capacity, not so great for repetitive shots

I use this in my Canon Rebel T2i, and it's great for regular shots. If you're taking a lot of quick shots, though, it takes a while for the photos to be written on the card. The in-between time from when you take the shot until it's finished writing it makes you lose some valuable shots. If you're taking sports or other fast-action photos, I'd recommend getting another card; for regular shots, though, go for this one.
What's great about it: Capacity
What's not so great: Speed shots take a while to be written
I would recommend this to a friend!

Macro and landscape pictures

I'm an archaeologist and will be needing to take publishable-quality photos of artifacts, etc. However I would also need to take pictures of a whole excavation site (usually requiring a trip up a tree to get a good perspective).

I am currently deciding on a camera body (XS or XSi??) and whether I need to purchase a different lens.

Which camera is best for taking both close-up and landscape shots? I won't be taking pictures of people (usually) or needing to take fast-action shots.

Thanks for any tips!
I would suggest for you to look at the Canon Rebel T2i. You can get the package with a 18-55mm lens, which would most likely suit your needs really well. You can shoot photos up close or far away, and the photos still look great. I use that camera and have really liked the fact that it isn't bulky and is fairly lightweight compared to most DSLR cameras. It's also not so expensive that if something did happen to it, you wouldn't be sinking $2500 for it. Good luck with your photos!

Why aren't there any package deals with the T1i or the T2i?

There actually are package deals out there. I haven't seen them listed online, but they're definitely in the stores. The packages I saw for the T1i and the T2i include a case, extra battery, and an HD television connector, I believe. I think the price was somewhere around $150, give or take a little bit.
