A. The Good:
Garmin has addressed many of the issues with the lower cost 2XX line such as:
- Voice guidance is clearer than the 255w. Appears that they have added some pre-emphasis for lower frequencies.
- Volume. It is LOUD. I am using it at 50% or below. Anything above 80% causes distortion.
- Searches nearby cities in its database for streets. For example, East Hartford Twn and East Hartford. The older IQUE series needed to be specific. Would be great if we could search by ZIP code.
- Routing engine - almost as good as the 660.
- Initial route calculation is very fast; re-route calculation is quite reasonable (Magellan is faster).
B. Yet to be addressed:
1. Major flaw:
- This unit has difficulty differentiating between "right" and "left". If it tells you to turn left, check the visual display, you may need to turn right. Also, if it says the destination is on the left, the destination may be on the right.
2. Minor annoyances:
- The text-to-speech engine still leaves a lot to be desired. Here in Connecticut, the state highways are pronounced as "court", for example "Turn left on court 5" instead of "turn left on Connecticut 5". Takes a little getting used to.
- My old IQUE used to automatically zoom out to the two end points of the route, progressively zooming in as the distance to the next turn got smaller. This unit requires manual zooming out and there is a limit. It does zoom in as the distance to the next turn gets smaller, promptly forgetting the zoom out setting, forcing the manual zoom out again.
- When searching for restaurants. Garmin's view of "Asian" appears to be Chinese only. Someone please tell Garmin that there are other countries in Asia - 37 at the last count.
What's great about it: Inexpensive Garmin with lifetime traffic
What's not so great: Unit has trouble distinguishing "right" from "left"
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

what is speech recognition?

Most GPS units (or other electronics) require input in the form of key presses - for example a physical computer keyboard, or the soft keys on visual display that need to be touched.

Speech recognition gives a GPS unit (or other electronics) the ability to accept input via a spoken language. So, if it works well, you would have the ability to say "New York" instead of having to type "New York" on the keyboard.
