Classic Coen Bros. Film
on January 5, 2014
Posted by: AWil
from FL
This Coen Bros. Classic is billed as a true story--but isn't. I haven't seen this film in a whole, but I fell in love with it on my first viewing. What's important to mention here is that this Blu-ray was out together with an outdated master. It is expected that Fargo will be remastered this year for MGM's 90th anniversary. If you can't wait, then this disc will suffice.
My Best Buy number: 967377313
What's great about it: Classic film at a great price
What's not so great: Dated master (new release forthcoming)

Elsewhere, NYPD Detectives Carter (Taraji P. Henson) and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) become further involved in the police conspiracy known as "HR".

Best Procedural on TV
on January 5, 2014

I had no interest in this show when I first read about it when it was in the pilot stage. After all, it's a procedural on CBS. That usually signifies that the program is garbage. That's not the case here. While the show doesn't get very intellectual with its premise, it's still an interesting twist on the standard formula and is quite relevant.
Jim Caviezel is serviceable in his role while Michael Emerson is excellent in his.
The set contains an above average a/v presentation but is light on extras. Recommended.
My Best Buy number: 967377313
What's great about it: It's a procedural with serialized elements and an interesting premise
What's not so great: Well, it's a procedural...

A costlier way to brew
on April 19, 2013

This Keurig brewer brews well and is easy to use. Brewing one up quickly offers great convenience. Obviously, you pay much more for a k-cup compatible brewer and coffee costs more on a per-cup basis.
The durability of these machines is dubious. We've had one die; many others (some that I know personality) have had their Keurigs die, too.

See TITANIC as you have never seen it before, digitally re-mastered and overseen by Academy Award-winning director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet shine in the timeless love story born of tragedy that created an international phenomenon as memorable as the legendary ship of dreams. Winner of 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, this epic masterpiece is destined to sweep audiences anew into the journey of a lifetime. Titanic was originally released in 1997.

Decent film with an excellent 3D conversion
on April 19, 2013

Titanic is back--this time in 3D. James Cameron has ensured that his second-highest-grossing film has received a first-rate conversion to 3D. I enjoyed watching the film, but its faults are still present, of course. The acting is uneven, as is the dialogue. DiCaprio and Winslet do have chemistry, though. The film isn't as bad as its detractors would have you believe, but it's not great.
The Blu-ray 3D package is first-rate.

What's great about it: The 3D
What's not so great: The film is still just okay

A great best pic winner that falls a bit short

Argo is Ben Affleck's third effort behind the camera. (Hopefully) we're all aware of the Iran hostage crisis that occurred from 1979-81. This film focuses on six Americans who made it away from the embassy, and the Canadians and Americans who got them out of Iran.
The film is well-made. Those who care about authenticity will be upset, however. The third act is not as strong as the rest of the film, but Affleck keeps the film from fully stumbling to its conclusion.
The blu-ray offers excellent picture and audio, and above-average supplements.

What's great about it: Well-made film about an interesting topic
What's not so great: Lack of authenticity, the Hollywood ending

An unconventional masterpiece

No Country for Old Men is a well-directed film about a man who goes on the run after taking money from the scene of a drug deal gone bad, the man who pursues him, and the sheriff of the town in which the drug deal occurred.
The film employs some great tonal shifts and does not bend from what it needs to be in order to convey its themes properly. A masterpiece.
The blu-ray offers excellent picture and audio, but is light on the extras.

In this charming, critically acclaimed tale of rumors and reputation, Olive (Emma Stone), an average high school student, sees her below-the-radar existence turn around overnight once she decides to use the school's gossip grapevine to advance her social standing. Now her classmates (Amanda Bynes, Aly Michalka) are turning against her and the school board is becoming concerned, including her favorite teacher (Thomas Haden Church) and the distracted guidance counselor (Lisa Kudrow). with the support of her hilariously idiosyncratic parents (Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson) and a little help from a long-time crush (Penn Badgley), Olive attempts to take on her notorious new identity and crush the rumor mill once and for all. Directed by Will Gluck.

Emma Stone shines
on April 18, 2013
Posted by: AWil

Emma Stone charms in a film in which she gets caught in a lie that leads to her being ostracized from her school and looked down upon by her puritanical classmates.
Easy A impressed me. It was witty, biting, and also featured some pleasant performances. The film probably could have been fleshed out a bit more, but it works well enough.
The audio and video were solid, while the extra features were run-of-the-mill.

Superb film with great performances

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE 15th ANNIVERSARY BLU-RAY
I hadn't gotten around to watching Good Will Hunting for quite some time. I finally caught it on Blu-ray; it was everything I had hoped it'd be. The film's strength is in the performances, particularly Robin Williams's. he does great work here, as does Matt Damon. The relationship between their characters is the centerpiece of the film.
The Blu-ray release is fully competent audio- and video-wise. Special features are ample, including a newly produced 1-hour retrospective.

If you enjoyed Knocked Up in theaters and want a jam-packed DVD, you may as well purchase the Knocked Up 2-disc Collector's Edition.
What's great about it: fun movie, great extras
What's not so great: not many new scenes in the unrated version
