The goofy zombie sequel Return of the Living Dead Part II makes its way to DVD for the first time with this slick but flawed release from Warner Home Video. Presented in its original 1.85:1 widescreen image, the picture looks remarkably clear, with colors enhanced from previous VHS and laserdisc copies. Included is a commentary from writer/director Ken Wiederhorn and none other than Part II's zombie kid himself, Thor Van Lingen. Recorded separately, the two have fun with the film, with Thor easily guiding the viewer through the film like it was the back of his hand. He's also the one that admits to what will obviously be the biggest beef with this DVD -- its newly created Dolby Digital Stereo soundtrack. Much of the film's original synth score has been replaced with either new ambient creepy music or '80s-style party music. It's possible that there could have been some song rights issues, but you can toggle over to the French audio track easy enough to hear the old score in all its glory. Other added sound effects and even a voice-over will also be a distraction for fans of the original version, though first-time viewers won't be affected too much by it. The theatrical trailer rounds out the extras on this disc.

Even its biggest fans would probably agree that Rupert Wainwright's Stigmata compares unfavorably with more established entries in the supernatural horror genre, such as The Exorcist. However, as the first mainstream Hollywood film to try to explore in depth the phenomenon of stigmata, it does demand some respect, and MGM's DVD possibly casts the film in a better light than did its theatrical release. Certainly it could not look any better, with a superb anamorphic transfer. The exaggerated contrast between the gray Pittsburgh streets and the frequent use of blood-red in the film is tremendously effective, adding significantly to the atmosphere. The Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound is also good, crisply delivering Billy Corgan's music and the film's many effects. This disc is beautifully packaged and has a fine selection of special features. The eight-page booklet that accompanies the disc is full of interesting information concerning not only the film but also the background and history of stigmata in general. Others features include the original trailer for the film and the promotional video for the Natalie Imbruglia song "Identify," which was written by Corgan and is featured on the soundtrack. There is an audio commentary by Wainwright that is enthusiastic and quite in-depth; it explains how the film acquired its stunning look and many special effects. The feature most of interest is the deleted scenes section. Though some of these scenes (there are six in all) are grainy, most are quite good, particularly the alternate ending, which is completely different and probably better than the d~nouement in the finished film. MGM has done a fine job with this disc, and Stigmata emerges from this DVD release a much more likeable and satisfying movie.

New Zealand's Peter Jackson is known for his skewed, gross-out films. Dead Alive is probably the grossest film he's made, but it's also the funniest, and the unrated, widescreen presentation on this DVD is a sick, hilarious treat. The video quality is superb. The widescreen transfer is clean and colorful. Jackson's steadicam trickery is allowed to make its maximum effect; the camera zips around every nook and cranny of the stylish settings. Colors do seem a bit muted at times, but this only adds to the clean-cut look of the more sedate scenes. The cookie-cutter look contrasts quite fiercely with the graphic mishmash in other sections of the film. Buckets of blood and comic dismemberments shockingly spill off the screen, and the digital transfer never hampers the horror. The digitally mastered sound fits the visuals to a tee. It's a startling, unusual vision done justice by DVD. As far as supplemental material, the package is lacking. A scene index and a theatrical trailer are the only bonus features. The scene index is split into six screens, allowing instant access to 24 chapters (displayed in full-motion video thumbnails). The theatrical trailer is a full-frame, amusing affair that will either win over uninitiated viewers or turn their stomachs. Dead Alive is a disturbing comic gem, given a respectful, yet bare-bones transfer to DVD.

Horror maven Wes Craven attempted a slight change of pace from his usual slasher movie milieu with this chiller loosely based on a true story. Bill Pullman stars as Dennis Alan, a Harvard researcher sent to Haiti by a pharmaceutical company to investigate the zombie legend and any possible connection it might have to a rumored drug that could be used as a new breed of powerful anaesthetic. Once on the Caribbean isle, Alan is aided by a good voodoo priest or "houngan" (Paul Winfield) and his daughter (Cathy Tyson), who runs a local clinic. Alan's search also pits him against an evil houngan, Dargent Peytraud (Zakes Mokae). Peytraud also controls the Tonton Macoute (the Haitian secret police), who are involved with soon-to-be-deposed dictator "Baby Doc" Duvalier. The Serpent and the Rainbow was based on the book of the same name by Wade Davis, an ethnobotanist whose real-life hunt for the zombie drug was credited with cracking the medical mystery behind the myth.

It seems that korn just seems to get worse and worse every album. Don't get me wrong I love their first two albums, but after that I feel it all kind of went to S**t. I mean the 3rd was tollerable. But the forth was just awful. The untouchables wasn't far from that either. Now I must say I did kind of like take a look in the mirror, speaking as a metal head. But then they made untitled and that just was awful, just awful. And now this album is just "pethedic" and "Stupid". They really need to go back to doing heavy stuff, cause really, in my opinion, it doesn't sound good with anyone. I think that this is just a series of albums that are gonna keep getting worse and worse, until they realize they need to stick to heavyness.

why do you critize awesome metal bands/albums
July 18, 2010
i first noticed you saying good stuff about metal bands but in my opinon you are not as open to new music as me you called the world needs a hero by megadeth a dry album which i totally disagree with you stop hating on metal bands and metal music
The album is ok, but it is nothing I would really rave about. It is, in my opinion, probeblly the "dryist" Megadeth album. There wasn''t really anything magical about it. But it's not awful, it's just not magical at all, magical meaning: the solos are bland, the music itself is bland. I don't think I would recomend this album to a friend. If you have to choose between this and another megadeth album, I strongly suggest you choose the other one, cause this album is by far the worst album, as far as the music goes.

This album is a break from the Coldplay normal, but not all breaks are bad. I like this album for its innovation in sound and creativity. No two tracks are the same either. In terms of price though, this album is one of those "almost-rip-offs" because it only has 10 tracks on it.

actually 12 songs if you include the hidden tracks
July 27, 2010
you misscounted theirs only 12 songs on the album if you include the two hidden tracks
This sounds like a cross between R.I.P. and S.F.S.G.S.W. only a little better. The only thing thats lacking is the drums. They are very good but lack the style and creativity that only Menza had. This has to be one of the best CD's of 2009.

shawn drover is in the same league as nick menza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also listened to the whole album on Kid's facebook and it is awesome! He went a total different route with this album leaving his twisted brown trucker band behind. It's a little country and rock but the cd takes on a total different feel from his previous work. So go out and support this album you won't be dissapointed!
