Joss Whedon attempted to follow up his successful series Buffy the Vampire Slayer with the science fiction-themed Firefly. Although the series failed to garner a mass audience, it did have a loyal following. Those fans will be pleased by this box set that contains every episode of the series that aired, as well as three never-before-seen episodes. All 15 episodes are presented in anamorphic widescreen. English, French, and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Commentaries are available on four of the episodes. Production featurettes, a blooper reel, and a tour of the set with Whedon round out this solid package that should be of interest to genre enthusiasts as well as Whedon's fans.

From the mind of Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Angel", "Dollhouse", and "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" comes this short-lived but beloved space adventure. FIREFLY is a "space western" set 500 years in the future, long after mankind has abandoned Earth in favor of a new galaxy. The story follows the crew of the Firedly-class transport ship Serenity, a ragtag group of outlaws, fugitives, and eccentrics led by Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), a war veteran. Constantly on the run from the bureocratic Alliance, pirates, and other outlaws, Captain Mal and the crew try to make a living as best they can.
Though this series was cruelly treated by Fox and cancelled after only 9 aired episodes, it has gone on to become a beloved cult classic with millions of fans called "Browncoats" worldwide. Among those fans are a few NASA astronauts, who have brought the series up for viewing on the International Space Station! The series is rich with Whedon's trademark humor and clever dialogue, but it also excels in telling unique dramatic stories. The entire cast is terrific, the special effects still look good today, and the science of the space-travel is for the most part accurate, something almost unheard of in sci-fi! If you're a fan on the genre, you owe it to yourself to check this series out.
What's great about it: One of the most unique and enjoyable sci-fi series of all time
What's not so great: It got cancelled far too soon!
