Better than average reboot /prequel to Planet of the Apes. Great story, but Franco is miscast and some of the special effects are shaky. Serkis is awesome.

What's not so great: James Franco, some special effects

Mortal Instruments was ok. It has an interesting premise and some good sequences but it was quite boring and more for fans of the book. My wife loved it and she read the books.

What's great about it: Interesting, not terrible
What's not so great: Kind of boring, more for fans of the book

Siliving Linings Playbook was my 2nd favorite film of 2012, it followed right behind Django Unchained. This movie is absolutely brilliant, just wonderful. It is rewatchable in every way, I even saw it three times in theaters. The acting is top notch, it has a beautiful touching story, and is really really funny. Jennifer Lawrence deserved her Best Actress Oscar by far for this. Bradley Cooper's best acting and best character to date.
And the blu ray is almost perfect as well. The picture quality? Fantastic. The sound? Pitch perfect. Extras include makings of, deleted scenes, the only thing I would've wanted was a commentary by Lawrence, but she's a busy actress, so I understand. THIS FILM IS A MUST BUY. Even though it is rated R, it really is a family film for those families with kids already grown into their twenties. The movie made my father cry at the end, and almost made me. Just brilliant.
What's great about it: Acting, Story, Picture Quality, Sound, Extras, almost everything
This set includes every episode from the third season of Justified, the Elmore Leonard-inspired TV series that follows the adventures of lone wolf US Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant as he puts an end to the careers of various criminals.

If you haven't seen Justified, you don't know what great television is. Justified, just like The Shield, Lost, 24, and other hour long serial dramas, will be one of the only ones remember for years to come. You get a perfect television show that brings a western feel from the old western movie and TV shows, and modernizes it into something that makes it something new.
Timothy Olyphant is perfect as Raylan Givens, just perfect. and Walton Goggins needs more leading man stuff, proving his worth as the love to hate him but can't live without him villian, Boyd Crowder. I don't want to ruin anything else, the less you know going in, the better.
Now I didn't get the blu-ray of this because the blu-ray was a little bit more expensive than the DVD, but honestly, on this it didn't make that much of a difference. On DVD the picture and sound still look and sound great, still putting you right in the middle of all the characters and action.
The only complaint I would have about this product is that it needed more special features. Sure you get your commentaries, deleted scenes and making of but with a show as great as this, I'm sure there are more treasures that many EXTRA lovers would love to seek out and watch.
But that's a minor complaint. A must buy, but of course if you haven't seen any of Justified, go back and buy and watch season one and two first. Just absolutely perfect.

Dredd is everything that people that were disappointed in the old Stallone film could ever want. We get a movie where the action is truly gritty, just like the comic. You get an actor that doesn't take his helmet off and looks and acts like Dredd, and you leave the theater satisfied and talking with your friends about the film for days.
Dredd is just pure fun. And with the Blu Ray 3D, it is even more fun watching it at home than the 3D in the theater. The Blu-Ray is a perfect transition. At home, the 3D really flies out at you at the screen and you feel like you are inside the movie. For the slo-mo sequences, it is worth buying this blu ray for just that alone.
Now while the plot is on the thin side (nearly the whole movie takes place inside a building, and it could've used more extras) this is a great Blu ray 3D release. Yeah, there are a bunch of featurettes in the extras, but they are short and could've expanded on things.
But the good completely outweights the minor annoyances. You get awesome action, great one liners, great picture, sound, and absolutely fantastic 3D.
Even if you don't know who or what Dredd is, still give it a shot, you might enjoy yourself, especially if you have a 3D tv at home. If not, and you already own this film, it might be worth buying a 3D tv for.
My Best Buy number: 0038513299
What's great about it: 3D is perfect, action is tight, Urban as Dredd is perfect
What's not so great: could've been better plot, needed more extras

A sci-fi film destined to become a classic in time

Looper was one of the best movies of 2012. I know there are some complainers out there with some of the huge plot holes and time travel consistencies, but when has time travel ever been logical? This movie's concept is just brilliant, making time travel illegal and the only ones who use it are criminal organizations sending someone back in the past to get assassinated and there being no trace of the body for them to get convicted. But what if you are the assassin and the person that gets sent back is and older version of you? An original idea where originality is thrown out the window nowadays, that alone is worth giving this movie a look.
You get mostly everything with the Blu Ray extras, but would've liked a commentary with Bruce Willis included, and you get a whole thing of deleted scenes and a time travel science featurette which was pretty cool. Great picture and sound, a must own for movie enthusiasts.
Combine it with great acting from Willis and Gordon-Levitt, a killer score, great special effects, and a emotional climax, this movie is going to be looked at as a classic in later years, maybe even compared to Back To the Future one day (well, maybe not that close, but close)

What's great about it: Story, acting, special effects, and concept
What's not so great: a few plot holes, drags a bit in middle
