Good for SPECIFIC Uses - read why

If you have a newer camera, then you'll like a Class 10 card, BUT, if you have an older camera with a 'small' image size, say 1MP-5MP, then this will do the trick. Also, some older electronics ONLY like the slower Class 4 cards and don't work as well, or at all, with the speedier Class 10 cards. So be very picky in what you are going to use this for-okay?

Missing AM Band, Only High Power HD FM's Received
on April 15, 2010

"Close but no cigar", as they say. I cannot recommend the unit as it is - BUT - it could be 'fixed' to get my recommendation. The Insignia Portable HD Radio does receive HD-FM broadcast stations that are LOCAL and have at least 50KW of power; suburban stations won't lock the HD signal. There is no AM band, no HD-AM; I would expect at least analog AM and even analog AM Stereo (C-Quam) on a tuner like this. I wouldn't mind having special headphones with the AM antenna built into it if that's what it would take to have AM on this radio. I like the RDS feature on the radio but the FONT SIZE for the text on the radio is 6 point or 8 point, and you can't read the small text at the bottom of the screen! They need a "large font" menu option. They should add a 'sleep timer' to shut the radio off after 1 hour of no button presses so you don't run the rechargeable battery down to nothing shortening its lifespan. Any Mini-USB charger works to recharge it, which is good. Audio quality is average at best - you need to add your own earbuds to appreciate HD radio sound. I would like the signal strength meter to be "on" all the time when I move around to find the 'sweet spot' where I can receive the station in HD. RDS info on other FM stations is average, but again, text is too small. If you want 5 stars, update this radio with AM analog, analog stereo or AM-HD, then allow for an external antenna connection, add the sleep timer, allow for larger text font size and increase tuner sensitivity, and keep the price under $50 and I'll be back to buy a dozen as Christmas gifts!
What's great about it: Color Display, Rechargeable Battery, HD from STRONG LOCAL FM stations, RDS on FM
What's not so great: No AM, No AM-HD, No AM stereo, No "Analog-lock" switch, TEXT Font TOO TINY
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Time Delay when used with TV set and BT speaker?
April 25, 2016
I tried this with my TV set, and there is a time lag of almost one second delay, so you hear the sound on the TV, then you hear it over the BT about 1 second later, so the mouth doesn't match the picture, and you get an echo as this is after the sound goes out over the TV speakers. Does anybody else have this problem, or is it just my TV or BT setup?

Handy do all portable network radio
By Showdontel
Recently bought this via the deal of the day. For a small tabletop device you will get the sound that you would expect though it does offer a jack to connect externals speakers (which I have tried and found the sound to be fair). Another great feature is that it has a rechargeable battery so you can take it to go. Driven by an android type operating system, on line music streaming choices are plenty and does many additional app features you can simple download to the device via the app store. Great customer service at Aluratek, as I recently had issues connecting to my Sirius XM app- they were helpful in getting my problem solved. This radio won't fill the room with sound but would be perfect for a desk or small room. Highly recommend giving it a try!

Can it decode the BBC's HLS, HDS and MPEG-DASH?
September 10, 2016
So, can this decode the new streaming formats used by the BBC and other high-end broadcasters, such as: HLS, HDS and MPEG-DASH? Also, can it decode the NEW format used by SiriusXM? Many streaming radio don't. How about a remote? I want a "radio" not a phone with speakers, so being able to decode these new m3u8 encoding is a must. Can anybody tell me if this can decode the new Music Choice and BBC music formats?

Does this have a headphone jack, or does it have a pair of RCA audio jacks?

Bose~ SoundLink~ Speaker III: Connect your Bluetooth-enabled cell phone, tablet or laptop to this speaker that provides wireless streaming of your device's music, audiobooks and more. The slim profile allows to easily take the speaker with you.

Is there a device anyone would suggest to use with the unit to listen to XM without buying an XM radio or using my phone? Thanks!

I would suggest buying a Grace Digital 'Mondo' internet radio and getting the SiriusXM subscription for online service. You can tune with the home Grace Digital Mondo internet radio and hook up a $30 BlueTooth transmitter and then use these speakers!

USB Port works fine with other devices such as UPS exteran DVD device but still does not recognize HD Radio.

I have plugged in an APC Back UPS and a a External DVD-ROM Drive, both work just fine but still can not get computer to recognize HD Portable Player. Is there anything else that would cause this problem?
USB is for CHARGING ONLY. It can not do anything else but charge the internal battery. Sorry. Contact BB if you want more features added to future units.

Does unit have built-in speakers?

No speakers, headphones only. The headphone cord is also your FM antenna, so it's important to use the cord out straight.

How to switch radio mode from FM to HD

My portable HD radio is stuck in FM radio mode and I can't get it to tune to an HD station. How do I change the mode from FM to HD? Using the ALL SEEK or HD SEEK feature is still not landing it on HD stations, only FM.
You have to have a very strong signal to receive HD. HD is only 1% to 10% of the strength of the main analog FM. Call your local FM station to verify if they are in HD and ask for their station engineer on the phone; tell them your location and that you're trying to get them in HD. They will help you.

Does this unit pick up RDS?

Yes, it should pick-up the RDS, but it might be in very small letters at the bottom of the screen instead of the main screen, depending on how the station set it up. Clear Channel / iHeart stations seem to work okay, but Cumulus RDS does NOT.

Does this also have AM reception?

Only HD FM and FM seem to be specified. Can it also receieve AM band channels?
I am very disappointed to that they do no have AM on this radio. Please write or contact Best Buy and tell them that you want a portable HD-AM radio, as do I. This is FM only, not cool. Thanks.

can you switch between HD1, HD2 and HD3?

A radio station I want to listen to is currently on HD2, the problem is on the same station dial number there are also 2 other stations on HD1 and HD3 when I tune into this station I get the radio station that is on HD1 how do I listen to my station on HD2?
You have to WAIT until the HD stops flashing, (meaning you have a strong enough signal). If it doesn't stop flashing, you cannot get HD2 or HD3 until HD1 locks-in. WHEN, HD stops flashing, you have HD1 locked, then you can do a channel UP for HD2 and HD3 and save them as presets. Note: if you lose the HD1 signal, you will hear nothing on HD2 or HD3 even as presets until HD1 is strong enough to lock-in and stop flashing.
