The final installment in the Halo trilogy offer a great online experience. Up to 16 players can throw-down in social and ranked matches. Despite being about 3 years old, Halo 3 feature a large community and about 120,000 online players daily. The learning curve to the online is not difficult as the maps are easy to get used to. Also "The mighty melee" is very useful and make very satisfying kills. The matchmaking system is reliable and the online game modes has much appreciated variety. Classics like oddball and king of the hill make their return.
The single player like previous titles is playable with buddies on or off live. You can even play split screen online (one master account and up to three sub accounts). The story feature familiar places like New Mombasa also introduce the elites as an ally. Talented actors the likes of Keith David, Ron Pearlman, and Alec Baldwin adds to the epic feel of this sci-fi adventure. Overall its a great deal and I believe even after Halo reach comes out, you can still find plenty Spartans finishing this fight.
What's great about it: Story, online multiplayer
What's not so great: Short single player, weak driver AI

Its a great alternative for those who lack a credit or debit card to be a Xbox Live gold member. Its like $3.33 a month and worth it. Gold offer more features than silver. I mean silver is good, but a lack of online multiplayer is a problem. Gold offer the best of Xbox Live.
What's great about it: Easy to use. One year of a great online service.
What's not so great: 25 digit code.
I would recommend this to a friend!

what do I need to add to xbox 360 arcade version to get on xbox live?

You will already have xbox live silver right out the box. Just hook up the internet and your good to go. To get gold, you need a subscription card. You can find them anywhere. (prices will vary) Or if you have a credit card you can get xbox live gold right of the xbox. There three types of subscriptions: 1 month, 3 months, and 12 months. I would also strongly recommend a hard drive of at least 20 GB for any live related activity.
