It works as it is designed. I prefer the Samsung name brand over the store brand for this. I bought 4 store brand cords and they consistently did not work. This one does.

This 3TB WD My Cloud external network-attached storage device's Gigabit Ethernet interface allows connection to your existing network, so you can easily store and access files with compatible PC, Mac, mobile phones and tablets from anywhere in your home.
Can I access this across the house using wi-fi? More specifically, do I have to have a wired connection from the My Cloud to my home network in order to access it, or can it be part of my wifi network?
It's is plugged into your router in order to have Internet or home network access. It itself is not a router. Once plugged in and network access is obtained, you can set up an account at weatern digital my cloud in order to remotely access your media or simply use it a DLNA home media server to access your media, pictures, etc throughout the house.
