Great Movie, Great Features, Great Price!

"The Fifth Element" is one of those brilliant, imaginative, sometimes over-the-top crazy sci-fi movies that can't really be described; you just have to buckle up and enjoy the ride. This edition of the movie, made from a 4K remaster, looks and sounds gorgeous, and has a nice array of bonus features. With Director Luc Besson's new sci-fi epic, "Valerian", coming out this summer, now's a good time to revisit the film. What's even better is that at the time of this review, the Blu-ray is only $9.99, AND is part of a buy-one, get-one free sale at Best Buy. How do you go wrong?!

Ghostbusters: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson star as a quartet of Manhattan-based "paranormal investigators". When their government grants run out, the former three go into business as The Ghostbusters, later hiring Hudson on. Armed with electronic paraphernalia, the team is spectacularly successful, ridding The Big Apple of dozens of ghoulies, ghosties and long-legged beasties. Tight-lipped bureaucrat William Atherton regards the Ghostbusters as a bunch of charlatans, but is forced to eat his words when New York is besieged by an army of unfriendly spirits, conjured up by a long-dead Babylonian demon and "channelled" through beautiful cellist Sigourney Weaver and nerdish Rick Moranis. The climax is a glorious sendup of every Godzilla movie ever made-and we daresay it cost more than a year's worth of Japanese monster flicks combined. Who'd ever dream that the chubby, cheery Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man would turn out to be the most malevolent threat ever faced by New York City? When the script for Ghostbusters was forged by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, John Belushi was slated to play the Bill Murray role; Belushi's death in 1982 not only necessitated the hiring of Murray, but also an extensive rewrite. The most expensive comedy made up to 1984, Ghostbusters made money hand over fist, spawning not only a 1989 sequel but also two animated TV series (one of them partially based on an earlier live-action TV weekly, titled The Ghost Busters. Ghostbusters II: Ivan Reitman's sequel to the phenomenally successful Ghostbusters is looser and more self-assured than the original. The film opens with a title reading "Five Years Later" and finds the ghostbusters living in hard times. A restraining order has forbidden the boys to partake in paranormal warfare, and as a result they have had to seek other lines of work. Ray (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston (Ernie Hudson) spend their time performing at children's' birthday parties, and Egon (Harold Ramis) is busy conducting experiments investigating the effect of human emotions on the environment, leaving ghostbusting behind. Venkman (Bill Murray) and Dana (Sigourney Weaver) have split up. Venkman now hosts a local cable show called "The World of the Psychic." Dana, now divorced and the mother of a little baby named Oscar, works as an art restorer in a museum -- and this is where the plot kicks in. While Dana is restoring a portrait of a 16th-century tyrant by the name of Vigo the Carpathian, the portrait becomes hexed. The evil Vigo wants to return to life by taking over the body of Dana's little child. Vigo has enlisted Dana's boss, Janosz Poha (Peter MacNicol), to compel Dana to cooperate. Soon dirty sludge and slime flow through the streets of Manhattan, and the ghostbusters have to reunite to save the city from a funky paranormal evil.

Both Classics for $9.99 (at most)? Yes, Please!

If you don't already know why any comedy fan needs to own these films (yes, even the sequel), nothing anyone can say is going to clue you in. If you're wondering whether this particular set is worth picking up, I'm here to help. The short answer is YES. You get both films, recently remastered in 4K, a truckload of bonus features, some of them rare, and a really cool booklet that details some of the films' development. Even better, the price-point at the time of this review was $9.99, PLUS it was part of a buy-one, get one free special, so in the end I got three movies on Blu-ray for $9.99, which is awesome!

The "Unleashed Extended" is the version to get!

It goes without saying that "The Wolverine" is a VASTLY superior sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", and you can find any number of thought-pieces online as to why, so I won't retread that ground here. What is worth saying regarding this release is that no matter how much cheaper the single-disc release of "The Wolverine" may be compared to this one, THIS IS THE VERSION TO BUY. Never mind the presence of the 3D disc, since that's not even a thing TV manufacturers bother to produce anymore; what matters is that in this "Unleashed Extended" edition, you get both the theatrical release (which, while still too tame a telling of this story, was a decent movie) AND an unrated, extended version of the movie that gives a much clearer taste of what Director James Mangold was going to bring us with this year's "Logan". It's bloodier and more violent (which any comics fan knows Wolverine should always have been), and it digs a bit deeper into the characters and their relationships, which is always better than trimming those bits out for the sake of a shorter run-time. I caught this version on sale for $9.99 at Best Buy, and I couldn't be happier.

Great edition of the console to buy!
on January 8, 2016

We'd been cautious about entering the current console generation, mostly because of the trend we were seeing of games coming out either incomplete, broken, or requiring the purchase of a season pass in order to have the full experience. However, when Best Buy offered this Tomb Raider edition of the XBOX One, with a 1TB hard drive, both of the modern Tomb Raider games, and an extra controller on Black Friday 2015 for $349, we knew it was the right time to jump in (or "jump ahead", as the Microsoft marketing folks want us to associate with the XB1...).
After finally using the console since Christmas, I'm happy to say that it's been worth the investment so far. The system works well, the games we've played on it look and sound great (granted, that's only been LEGO Dimensions and Rock Band 4, so we haven't really pushed the limits of the hardware yet...), and the dashboard, while not as intuitive-seeming as its 360 counterpart, is fairly easy to get used to navigating. Importing our old XBOX Live profiles was really easy, and once we did, the XBOX One "recognized" which 360 games we had previously downloaded that would work with the One's backward compatibility, which I think is pretty cool.
The big plus for me with this console is its 1TB hard drive. Since the current-gen consoles require you to install your games (even those that you play via disc media, which wasn't necessary in the 360 era), I knew that it'd be pretty easy to run out of space, especially with some of the more prominent titles requiring as much as 40-50GB of hard drive space to install. Thankfully, this edition of the XBOX One's big hard drive will last us awhile before we'll need to deal with buying an external drive to increase our space.
Granted, my experience really hinged upon getting such a great Black Friday deal on the system, but even so, if you're looking to upgrade to the current generation, give this edition of the XBOX One a serious look.
