Get a reliable portrait lens for your NEX camera with this Sony 50mm lens. It has a fast aperture of f/1.8 for solid performance under low-light conditions, and it can get in close to your subject ~ up to 1.5 feet. Add a 49mm filter to your Sony 50mm lens for lens protection and polarization effects.

Great lens for the price

I own the a7, so my review is based on my experience with that model. I agree with the multiple comments regarding the slow autofocus and the loud motor noise when focusing. The relatively cheap kit lens SEL2870 is far better than this F/1.8 lens in those two areas. However, I decided to keep this lens because it is SHARP and it is a F/1.8. I left my kit lens and my Zeiss SEL2470Z at home during a baseball game, and I was forced to get creative with this lens to take shots. Here are some ideas that worked somewhat well for me:
1- Slow autofocus -
a) Use the DMF or S mode. If you use the continue autofocus, the lens might get into a vicious cycle of focusing and never truly focusing.
b) Use Flex Spot (small or medium). If you use Wide area, the lens will try to focus in a wider area, and it may struggle finding focus. Help the lens, and tell the camera where to focus.
2- Loud motor
a) This is an annoyance that makes its way to the video sound. The only way I found to make it workable is to do videos of subjects moving within the focus area. If the subject moves out of the focus area two things happen: 1) The subject gets blurred for a longer period than usual, 2) The motor noise will make its way to your video.

I needed a long cable from the TV to the sofa, so I could watch TV or play video games late at night without waking other people up. I also have wireless headphones for those instances. However, multiple times I found that my wireless headphones had the battery depleted or the battery died mid way. I have used the Canon T3i (back in the day), the Nikon 5100 (also back in the day) before meeting the Sony a6000. After owning the a6000, I found myself getting addicted to it. I had been looking about graduating to the a7 series. Now that I have, I am even more pleased with my a7. The camera is great in low light, very compact for full-frame, there are several adapters for non Sony lenses available (I am using one adapter for Canon lenses), and overall just easy to use. Great camera!

Great bang for the buck

I have mixed feelings about this lens. The main things I don't like about this lens are sharpness (especially along the edges) and build quality. I got sharper shots with the kit lens SEL2870 using similar settings and in the same place. The plus for this lens is the f/2.0, which comes handy for low light shooting. Another big plus is the relatively low price for this lens.

Nice lens for low light

I bought this lens for my Sony a7. I found the lens giving me nice low light shots at f/1.8 and significantly sharper than my other non-native lens at f/1.7. I also owned the SEL2870 (kit lens) and SEL2820, and this lens is far sharper than both. I recommend this lens if you lean more towards perfection in your shots. If you are looking for nice day-to-day shots, the other lenses might suffice.
