size matters - long enough and then some

Our old washer had 3 foot hoses, which was a stretch when we had the house re-piped. 6 foot hoses are long enough and then some. Go for the stainless steel and not the rubber/synthetic, you'll sleep better and night and when you're away for the next 25 years.

Our laundry room is small and the dryer vent wall attachment is on the side wall next to the dryer. With the built in 90 degree elbow, there is no excessive twisting of a flex duct, trying to always pull off the back of the dryer or from the wall.

Dries well, but takes a little longer than our old, non-GE dryer did, which may make shirts wrinkle a bit more. Very quiet. You need to also wipe the inside of the door down low where it hits the lint screen; otherwise, the door gets lint build-up.

cleans clothes but buy earplugs

Does a great job cleaning clothes and has lots of good settings for water temperature and agitator and spin speeds plus types of clothes, sheets, jeans, etc. GE states this is their quietest washer ever and that might be true for the "wash" cycles (I've never owned a previous GE washer). The agitator and wash is quiet. It makes the sound of someone slowly sawing plastic pipe with a hack saw. The rinse and spin cycles however are extremely noisy. The user manual states you will hear the "motor ramping up". It's more like the sound of a Navy F-18 taking off from a carrier. Our three cats now see us taking the laundry basket toward the washer and they all hide in closets and under sofas. We fear the day the washer ever goes out-of-balance; it might rip the house right off of the foundation.

I can only give this product a neutral 3-star rating because the point of this review is to let potential buyers know you do not need the dishwasher kit if you buy a Bosch 500 series and your dishwasher is hard wired. Everything you need for hook-up comes with the Bosch dishwasher. This is documented in several other Bosch and dishwasher kit reviews, but Best Buy won't let you purchase the installation of a dishwasher online or over the phone without buying the kit. Just take the kit to a store after your Bosch dishwasher is installed and get a refund.

quietest dishwasher ever

The Bosch 500 is so quiet, the first few times we used it we kept going back into the kitchen to see that is was actually on and working. No noise at all except a small gurgle when it's draining. The third rack is nice for oversized spoons and spatulas. The flip top lids for the utensil holder is a pain. I recommend just leaving it open all the time, but you loose one dish slot in doing so. The upper rack fits smaller bowls and glasses, but larger bowls must go on the lower rack. This is because of the angle and spacing of the tines. Cleans as well or better than the 20 plus year old dishwasher it replaced.

Just purchase this model. Would it be wise to buy the extended warranty?
My rule of thumb has been if it's made prior to the mid 1990's (any product) it was American made and will last well over 20 years. Anything since will start needing repairs in around five years. Between years 5 and 10 you will spend on repairs the cost of buying new. Notice that all the extended plans only go out 3 to 5 years from date of purchase.

Do I need to be on extra spin to get reasonably dry clothes?
Items are still very wet after spin dry. Much wetter than I recall with my other washing machines.
I find things are coming out dryer with the "regular" spin setting used with whites, colors, jeans, and sheets/towels than with our previous washer (non GE). Just be ready for the jet airplane take off noise. It's an ultra-high-speed fast spin.

What is the speed of the different Wash cycles and Spin cycles?
Could you please tell me what are the wash speeds for the various wash cycles (Whites- regular and light, towels/sheets, etc.) And what are the spin speeds for each of these wash cycles?
It's well explained in the user's manual. Most spin cycles for whites, colors, jeans, and sheets are noted as "regular", which judging from the sound of the motor (in my review a liken it to a navy F-18 taking off) is ultra-high-speed-fast. There are two other spin cycles, which are slower and are used for delicates and hand wash settings. I recommend using delicate for any cotton material with a "wrinkle free" coating on the material. The wrinkle free coating makes cotton wear out faster, especially back wallet pockets of khakis, cuffs of long sleeve shirts, and collars of dress shirts (puts holes in collars that match the pattern of the holes in the washer drum). I have not had this problem in the GE washer when set on delicate, nor a previous (different make/model) once I learned the secret of a slower motor speed.
