Galaxy Quest is easily the best Star Trek movie made since First Contact, or maybe even Undiscovered Country. Its understanding and adoration for its "source" material produced one of the warmest, funniest, exciting adventures a group of untested misfits ever went on. I know there's no hope for the adventure to ever continue of TV, but a fan can always dream...
The blu ray, too, is a serious step up in picture and sound quality from the DVD. As David Newman's rousing score never got a proper CD release, this is the best quality at which we're likely ever to hear it.

What is there left to say about Gravity? Cuaron made one of the most technically ambitious films of the 21st century and built it around one of our best actresses - it works on every level. And, goodness, the music; Gravity has one of the most effective scores I've heard in years.
The making-of documentary included on the disc is so comprehensive and fascinating that it almost runs the risk of imparting too much information, but it certainly enhances your appreciation for what the film accomplished.

Nintendo's finally starting to sell worthwhile software through their electromic storefront - this is a great way to pick up some great games with a smidge more security (especially when Best Buy sells the cards for 20% off)!

The first Thor skated by mostly on charm - Chris Hemsworth & Tom Hiddleston's, specifically. After a steady uptick in the quality of the Marvel films, we were all hoping that Thor 2 could take some of the lessons learned from Cap/Avengers/Iron Man 3 and really go to work, giving the God of Thunder and his associates a cosmic-level crisis into which they could dig their teeth, underpinned by some better material for the characters we'd come to love.
Well, The Dark World definitely succeeds in raising the stakes, both in regards to danger, and the presentation of that danger, but it still feels more like we're seeing points checked off a list than an actual story unfold onscreen. Everything moves faster this time, but too fast for anything to leave much of an impact. When you have your bad guys played by actors as accomplished as Christopher Eccleston and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, you want them to savor their villainy, to be able to relish in their presence, but instead they glower in the darkness, with barely enough time to articulate their motivations, let alone craft characters.
But, really, we're not watching Thor for thoughtful musings on the nature of power, or good and evil, or the advent of a Darth Vader-ian bad guy, but for a pair of brothers, to see if their bond of family can really be severed by lies and betrayal. Every complaint about The Dark World fades away when Hemsworth and Hiddleston are onscreen - the film snaps to life when Thor and Loki stand together. The strength of the Marvel films has really been in their casting, and these two are some of the brightest shining lights in the sky.
Actually, the whole cast of humans & Asgardians is utilized darn well here - even Renee Russo, whom I'd honestly forgotten was even in the first Thor. All of our heroes, and their friends, get at least a moment to shine (usually in one of The Dark World's many spectacular action setpieces), and for us to remember why we liked them so much in the first film.
Marvel also keeps up their burgeoning tradition of quality extras on their home-media releases; the short film one-shot, "All Hail The King," is hilarious and thrilling. All in all, Thor: The Dark World is immensely satisfying, if still less than it could've been.

It's terribly likely that anybody who played Link to the Past on the SNES has a soft spot for it in their heart. Nintendo finally decided to take advantage of that with this years-in-the-hoping sequel that caltures almost all the magic of the original, and adds a few little twists for good measure.

I'm not as sold on Zimmer's music for Superman as I was on his Batman music. He's a little too... formal (maybe even pompous) to do what I think needs to be done for Superman. That's not to say that John Williams hasn't written his fair share of pompous music, but if there's been a populist composer of music in America in the last 35 or 40 years, wouldn't John Williams be the guy to win that title? He's written so many iconic themes, instantly recognizable to so many people...
This is about Zimmer. Sorry. Got off track. The Man of Steel score is far better than the movie it's attached to; it actually projects a range of emotions that reach beyond intensely dour and dourly intense. His growing emphasis on percussion doesn't do it for me, though, as I'm a big fan of melody and theme in my soundtrack music, and that's here, but just not as present as would've been ideal.
Some of it's impressively evocative, though, and would feel like Superman even if it weren't attached to a Superman movie (especially the closing piece).
