This is a truly great Western. A bit of trivia: Director Howard Hawks remade this film not once, but twice in the next ten years. Rio Bravo, El Dorado and Rio Lobo are essentially the same movie and all three star John Wayne playing the same role; namely John Wayne. And people think that remakes and reboots are new phenomena.

District 9 is a really good film. Elysium is one of the most beautiful "bad" films ever made. Chappie has its own problems, but it is definitely a better film than Elysium. If you are interested in how to create cutting edge special effects, then all three films and their respective supplemental are worth your time.

All through the short history of cinema, films had been made about extra terrestrial and life on other planets, but the aliens were almost always a menace to mankind. Even a film like The Day The Earth Stood Still had aliens threatening earth, although with a very good reason. In 1977, Close Encounters of the Third Kind became the first film to view intelligent alien life as something not only benign, but also wondrous.

Twenty years ago, most critics and film goers misunderstood this satirical masterpiece as a glorification of fascism. This film is the exact opposite of that false narrative. This film shows how fascism uses patriotism and blind obedience to hold power. It shows how 'sexy' and appealing fascism can seem to be. With everything going on in the world today, this film is as timely as ever. It was just twenty years ahead of its time.

This movie a lot of fun but it suffers from many story logic issues, not to mention the fact that the movie is pretty much an unnecessary remake of the original Star Wars with bits of Empire and Jedi thrown in for good measure.
