The legs extend but you have to make sure they lock into place by twisting them and even then I wasn't sure if they locked. I used it with a Nikon COOLPIX L620 and I felt that the tripod was unsteady, it would have been better if the legs would spread apart a little bit more. Also had problems with the wing nut to tighten enough to hold the camera level it kept tilting to the side from the weight of the camera.
