A paradoxical anecdote or riddle, used in Zen Buddhism to demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke enlightenment. From Japanese, literally 'matter for public thought', from Chinese gōngàn 'official business'. (OED)
----------- the paradox: Last night I dreamt I was lying in bed wide awake, unable to sleep.
the inadequacy of logical reasoning: It seemed odd, not being able to sleep, as I was indeed sleepy, relaxed, and in a good mood. I started to turn over, but thought no, don't toss - that will just irritate and drive sleep further away. Sometimes with an ear scrunched into a pillow a certain way I can sort of hear my heartbeat. One trick I have for falling asleep is to make up a short tone poem in quarter-time to my heartbeat and repeat it, like an instrumental mantra. I tried to listen to the music.
the enlightenment: After a while I noticed the dim light falling on my eyelids wasn't coming from the direction of the window. As a last resort I decided to open my eyes. I wasn't in the bedroom. I had fallen asleep on the living room couch watching a DVD. The movie was over and was now cycling in top menu mode; the looping music was the somber, insistent drumming motif of Mad Max: Fury Road, decidedly not sleep-inducing. I had thoroughly enjoyed the film so much I had immediately started to watch it again.
the matter for public thought: This is a great movie. It's right up there with Kill Bill.

This is a straight ahead, blunt, pitiless portrayal of escalating violence in drug smuggling. It is also visually stunning, droll and captivating. Josh Brolin's performance is perfect. You can read his thoughts as he makes one bad decision after another. Javier Bardem is enigmatic, surprisingly resourceful and very scary. Tommy Lee Jones brings the gravitas that puts this 1980s "period piece' in perspective, and Woody Harrelson provides the much needed comedic relief.
