Come for the PvP, stay for the (co-op) campaign

Something about shooters just works so well for a co-op campaign. Halo never had an interesting world or story to tell, in my opinion, which is just as well since they worked on polishing the multiplayer to a pretty good shine. Sitting on the same couch blasting your friends (because paying to play a game online is a waste of money) is a lot of fun, and even better is teaming up with them to mow down the bad guys.
An improvement over the original games, but still not good enough to warrant all of the hype that the series receives. You can get just as good of an experience from any number of other shooters on the market. For my money, Borderlands is a better series and more worthwhile than Halo.

I admit it, I was never a big fan of the Halo series. However, I had friends that were fans so I always wound up in multiplayer matches and knew my way around the controls. The single player campaign was never appealing to me, and the multiplayer was something I was more or less forced to play by my friends. With that somewhat negative background for the game, I still bought a copy of this game so that I'd have something to play with my fiancee that she enjoyed. And much to my surprise, I kind of liked the campaign.
Now, that's not to say that I think all of the hype is warranted; not by a long shot. There are some truly evil checkpoint placements in the game, often stranding you with very little ammo, health, or both to finish up a firefight. Some levels or segments are incredibly annoying *cough Library cough* and there's a general feeling of predictability in the game; I always seemed to guess where the "dead body ammo dump" (as I called them) locations would be. The story is also pretty uninteresting, turning into a bland sci-fi zombie story about halfway through.
That said, they did cram some impressive size and scale into some of the areas, and switching between old and new graphics on the fly is a nice touch in this version of the game. Co-op is also a lot more fun than competitive multiplayer, which is how I've played most of the time now. And the controls are definitely solid, if unspectacular.
Which pretty much sums up how I feel about the game as a whole. Good enough, but nothing special.

Better than expected

I'm a longtime Fall Out Boy fan, following them eagerly since Take This To Your Grave, which is still one of my favorite albums to go back to time and again in the Pop/Punk genre. While Patrick Stump still gives an excellent vocal delivery (he was always my favorite part of the band) I still think that he sounded better and more into the music when it was over the lightly punky sound of their earlier works.
Needless to say the drastic shift in sound was a disappointment for me but I'm learning to enjoy them for who they are now, even if they aren't following up on the raw sound from the Pax AM Days EP like I'd hoped they would.
My favorite song is definitely "Novocaine," which has Patrick's strongest vocals on the album, pushing and straining his voice higher than ever, but the album is a solid run throughout. Not their best, but at least it's better than "Save Rock and Roll" and Folie A Deux.

Smash Bros has long been a favorite Nintendo series, but this one completely outdoes all of the previous entries in terms on content, control, gameplay, and of course graphics. There is no better multiplayer than a local game of Smash Bros.
Truly amazing in motion, and spending time mastering all of the characters is both enjoyable and will take plenty of time to learn. One of the best bang for your buck games around.

The Legend of Zelda series is admittedly one of my favorites so I may be a little biased, but this is a relatively overlooked gem from the N64 era that I'm glad to see updated and re-released for a new generation. This game has such atmosphere and personality that it's hard to put it down, and finding all of the masks is incredibly satisfying. Even the side quests have their own stories and happenings. One of the most vivid, living worlds created in games of the era, and it stands strong against the test of time. (Pun intended.)

Ever since the first time I played Super Smash Bros. on the N64 I've been dreaming of having a portable version to play on the road. Nintendo didn't just throw something together and call it a day, they built one of the most content-packed and feature-rich games for the 3DS system. I don't know how they accomplished pushing the system to its limits while still keeping perfectly smooth gameplay, even with the 3D turned on, but the programming effort was well worth it; this is truly uncompromised Smash Bros. game play in your hands, and it feels magical.

Most of the songs parodied here I was very tired of hearing played on the radio, or my friends playing them while we're hanging out, but the parodies kept it interesting and enjoyable to listen to them just one more time. Not to mention the comedy is intact; even in the face of a lot of competition from the YouTube generation Weird Al shows a much more polished level of comedic writing and timing with his parodies.
If you're a fan at all, definitely pick this one up.
I'm looking forward to seeing what he has planned now that his record contract is up...

While the different gameplay elements don't quite mesh and it feels like two separate games played at the same time, that's certainly not a problem. The story and characters are very well written and stay in-character based on their previous, individual games.
And absolute blast, I just wish we didn't have to wait so long to get this game in the United States. Better late than never!

Another Studio Ghibli Classic

Studio Ghibli is one of the best animation studios in the world, if not the absolute best. While this movie may not have gotten as much attention as some of their other films, you'd be missing out if you pass by this one, especially since it's a great price for a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack.
As is usual for their movies, the animation is magnificent. Details and colors just pop, and it's easy to lose yourself in the world of the movie. Especially in HD on the Blu-Ray, the presentation is absolutely flawless.
The plot is somewhat minimalist, focusing on two main points: The relationship between the main characters, Umi and Shun, and also the kids of their school banding together to save their clubhouse. Everything about the movie and characters feels human, even real, since there aren't any fantasy or magical trappings to overcome. The characters even react realistically to the few plot twists that are thrown in, something not seen in a lot of modern anime.
I don't want to say anything else to spoil the movie, but if you enjoy beautiful animation and "slice of life" style stories, then this is definitely a movie that you shouldn't miss.
