Strong film on Blu

Sorkin's reputation for crisp, rat-a-tat dialogue is well deserved, and he has an intriguing protagonist in Chastain's Molly Bloom. Sorkin directs a lot like he writes: fast and smooth, bordering on slick.
It’s a showcase role for Chastain. Even the voice-overs feel worthwhile and necessary (probably thanks to Sorkin).
All in all, I was impressed with Sorkin’s long overdue directorial debut. It’s a strong debut. However, something felt missing and perhaps it’s Bloom’s lack of personal relationships, the length of the film (Sorkin’s over indulgence), or the fact that I’m not sure why I should care about any of this.
The disc itself looks as great as it's going to look on a blu-ray disc and the same goes for the sound. The sound is as great as it's going to get it for a blu-ray. It's the perfect blu-ray disc.

A Visual and Emotional Masterpiece

I love when a director wears his or her's influences on their sleeves and Guillermo del Toro does so very much with this film. He makes the film absolutely enchanting by throwing us back into the hey-days of the 40's and 50's, on display are teal Cadillac's, the screens show us black and white movies , and the musical elements of yesteryears is ever present.
These little touches and details immersed me in a rich and wonderful world and prepared me for a great story that plays out just like a fairy-tale.
Now let’s talk performances, Sally Hawkins is phenomenal as the mute janitor. Her character of Elisa is charming and becomes more self-assured as the movie progresses. There’s a scene where she just stares down Michael Shannon’s character and it’s electrifying! Speaking of Mr. Shannon, he plays the ever angry Colonel Richard Strickland with such bravado that his presence on screen is always captivating. The rest of the supporting players are all committed: Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer and Michael Stuhlbarg are giving their best.
I watched “Pan’s Labyrinth” before seeing this film and I’m really glad I did. Guillermo del Toro returns to fine form with “The Shape of Water” that effectively echoes the texture, mood and style of his 2006 gem, "Pan's Labyrinth."
Lastly, nods to Dan Laustsen, the cinematographer of “The Shape of Water”, who might actually beat out Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049) for the Oscar. Also wothy of recognition is Alexandre Desplat, who gives us the score for the film that takes us back in time too.
This also happens to be one the best UHD discs of all time. It’s gorgeous.

Blade Runner 2049: Slice of Sci-fi Perfection

Director Denis Villeneuve, who earned his sci-fi bona fides with “Arrival”, successfully replicates the austerity Ridley Scott brought to Blade Runner.
There is a something to think about here, a fair amount to feel and even more to see. Mr. Villeneuve has conspired with the cinematographer, Roger A. Deakins; the production designer, Dennis Gassner; and the special effects team to create zones of strangeness that consistently rise to the level of sublimity.
What distinguishes “Blade Runner 2049” from other high-end genre spectacles is an unnerving calm, as if Villeneuve were exploring and trying to synthesize the human and mechanical sides of his own sensibility.
Gosling and Ford are double dynamite in a mesmerizing mindbender that asks new questions meant to tantalize, provoke and keep us up nights. Would you have it any other way?
One of the best UHD discs yet.

I can't say the first half of “It” scared me senseless, but it built up enough goodwill toward its young heroes to make me curious about what they'll do in the third act and to care about what happens to them. It’s a testament to “It”s great screenplay.
This is one of the most gorgeous 4K discs I’ve seen yet. The Dolby Atmos sound is exceptional.
