These are great speakers, I use them for my tablet so I can hear movies without having to use the earphones as the internal tablet speaker is barely adequate. Depending upon how much power your tablet or device feeds into this unit, the volume will be limited but for the price it does the job for what I need it to do.

Will it work w/ an Otterbox Defender case on the iphone?
Yes, that the case I use, this is just like the cord you get with your iPhone, the defender case has a tab to lift up and it works fine.

Will the finger-touch feature on the 5s work with this case?
I think you would have to keep flipping the plastic back so this probably would not be the best case for you if you have to use that feature.

Yes, you should be able to add a 3rd party extension cord but I find the cord with the unit appropriate for the size and volume of these speakers.
