Dragon Quest VIII is a great RPG that is easily accessible for newcomers. No knowledge of prior games in the series is required and the game is designed to appeal to all ages. It was already a classic on the Playstation 2 but the 3DS version offers many welcome additions like the ability to save more frequently that make the game more enjoyable.

Fire Emblem Echoes is easily the best looking and presented Fire Emblem game on the 3DS so far but what makes it interesting is how it changes the series' established mechanics.
This game is a remake/reimagining of Fire Emblem Gaiden which was originally on the Famicom over two decades ago but it doesn't feel stale or outdated.
While the game is still about turn based tactical combat on a grid map it also introduces ideas seen in other more traditional RPGs like dungeon crawling.
The game is definitely accessible to newcomers and requires no knowledge of previous entries in the franchise.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into Prey but was easily sold on it by the demo available on the PSN store. Inevitably it will be compared to games like System Shock and Deus Ex due to how you build your character and explore the environment but it has its own distinct style. If you are interested in a game that challenges players and also asks you to accomplish tasks without immediately telling you the solution then I think you will have a good time with Prey.

Match shape-shifting wits against friends in Puyo Puyo Tetris for the Nintendo Switch. It combines everything you love about both puzzle games, and it ups the ante with a Swap mode that lets you switch between board styles. Race against the clock or add in special items to make game play more challenging in Puyo Puyo Tetris.

The NES mini offers the best version of 30 NES games and provides hours upon hours of entertainment. It has an easy to understand interface and the simplicity of the NES controller means that even most newcomers shouldn't have a hard time figuring out how to use it.
If you can find this item at MSRP it is a great deal as the cost of purchasing the games contained on it either physically or digitally is higher than the $60 asking price. However, at current secondary market prices it is a pass. I can't recommend spending more than $60 on this item but if you can get it at that price then I think you are getting a great value.

Nostalgic fun but not for everyone

As the name suggests this game is a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment and even had some of the original team involved in its production. Gameplay is very traditional CRPG style which doesn't always translate well to a controller but as this is not a twitch based game there is plenty of time to acclimate to the controls.
Please be forewarned that you will spend the majority of your time reading. If that sounds fun to you then you will probably enjoy this game, but if you are looking for something more action focused you may want to look elsewhere.

Go back to the beginning in this reimagined version of Ratchet & Clank for the PlayStation 4. Its deepened origin story is revealed through over an hour of cinematic movie sequences, and the new planets, game play and boss battles keep the experience fresh. Protect the Solana Galaxy again with the robust arsenal of weapons in Ratchet & Clank.

Forget about the CG movie that flopped in theaters around the time of this game's release. This title is just as much a Ratchet & Clank game as any other in the series. The one problem that franchise veterans may have is that in an attempt to make the game accessible to newcomers it may seem boring and stale to those who have played what came before.
