Grease earns one of my four stars just for its production/entertainment value and its role in reviving memories of what is now a historic era. Otherwise--especially with a view to the story--I would give it only three stars. The story is disjointed, and the motivation of many characters seems random. But after recently watching the stage version of Grease--which celebrates purposeless rebellion against all authority, just because--I began to see that the movie's creators at least made some effort to come up with real motivations for both of the lead characters in their ultimate decisions. I respect the movie versions of Danny and Sandra far more than the stage versions. Aside from that, both versions are full of fun throwbacks to the fifties.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie smolder in one of the most anticipated, sizzling action films ever made. After five (or six) years of vanilla-wedded bliss, ordinary suburbanites John and Jane Smith (Pitt and Jolie) are stuck in a rut the size of the Grand Canyon -until the truth comes out! What do you do when you discover you've married a contract killer? To complicate matters, what do you do when your spouse discovers that you're engaged in the same secret occupation? And further, what happens when your own reputation and livelihood--and eventually your life--depends on your killing your spouse? Mr. & Mrs. Smith's deft handling of this dark premise allows the viewer to breathe easy and enjoy the characters' explorations of a what-if scenario that purposefully explodes the boundaries of probability. The movie is intentionally and playfully filled with cliches (e.g., the use of the name Smith to cover true identity) that in less skillful hands would be embarrassing. The writing is clever, and the primary actors clearly had fun in their roles, because we have fun watching them.

The book Ender's Game has long been recognized as one of the best available examples of excellence in character development in any literary genre. In addition, the author (Orson Scott Card) has done an amazing job of world building, has proved conversant in both scientific and philosophical concepts, has deftly addressed a classic moral dilemma with implications for any historic era, and has written with skill that keeps the reader enthralled. I don't believe that every film rendition of a book must be faithful to the book in order to be good, but this movie is both reasonably faithful and good. The characters of the children and the complex relationships between them are portrayed well, and I was especially happy to see Harrison Ford break free from his string of recent performances as a grumpy old man in order to come across with genuine compassion, among other important qualities, in the portrayal of his multilayered character.

Ghost Busters is a must-see for anyone who expects to catch many of the jokes and cultural references still floating around decades after the film's creation. So it's part of one's cultural education, as well as a fun adventure in itself.

I bought this laptop for my college son to use for school, and so far it is working as expected. It has plenty of RAM (8 GB), HD storage (1 TB), and chip speed (i5) for the moderate demand his school work (mainly word processing and Web browsing) places on it. I've owned a Dell Inspiron before, and it lasted me ten years, so I have hopes that this one will serve my son for three or four. The combination of features--e.g., web cam, ten-key pad, touch pad, optical disc drive, Bluetooth, and wifi, among others--is the kind of package I usually look for, and the normal Best Buy price of $500 is worth it, let alone the pre-Black Friday sale for $350, which we took advantage of.
