According to HP Tech Support, this printer will not operate with only the black cartridge installed; the color cartridges must be installed and contain at least a minimum level of ink. I asked him to define minimum and he said that as long as the printer display does not say the cartridge is empty and it needs to be replaced, that should work. I dumped the 6520 and bought a 7640, which includes a newer technology that does not required the color cartridge (just 1 for the 7640) to be present in order to print in black only.
