If you have an xbox one its necessary to have an xbox live account to be able to interact with other gamers. It also allowes you to download free games but you have to keep the membership active if you want to continue playing a free game. One very important thing to know is that you have to have a credit card on file to be able to download free games. They will NOT charge you for the games but you still have to have a credit card on file.
