Not as bad as the 4th [to be released, aka Ep1] Star Wars. Things blow up. This whole franchise is so much easier to accept if you keep this thought in your mind: John McClane is related to the Tick. Is it ever established in either franchise? Nope. But the evidence is clear. So McClane is the Yogi Bear of action. Maybe he's not smarter, but he's certainly more resistant to massive bodily harm, than the average bear. He can pilot aircraft with no training, but as a penalty, his character is no good with women. He has nearly Wolverine like healing abilities, even to the point of ageing at a slower rate than most humans, it seems. Also, it seems John can spontaneously produce grown offspring, complete with backstories, at will. Maybe in Die Hard 25, it will be revealed that the McClanes were part of a weird experiment, or some sort of evolved human, like the X-Men. Either way, stuff blows up in this film. Other rec'd viewing includes The Last Boy Scout, Bad Boys, and any other film referenced in Hot Fuzz. Also, Hot Fuzz. BluRay is prettier than DVD, and probably sounds better too.

What's great about it: Even bad McClane is still McClane
What's not so great: probably the worst of the 5 Die Hards so far released

Great version of a good action film

This might as well be a review for any franchise with so many films: The original trilogy was better. The 4th to be released felt like a lame moneygrab, that tarnished the series. The 5th film is a good film, sure, but has no chance of reaching the level of 1-3. Nostalgia alone makes this impossible.
Now, this film, in particular, is a good action flick. And TBH, I actually look forward to the inevitable continuation of the franchise with... [mild spoiler]
the new McClane

What's great about it: Pretty picture, crisp sound of explosions
What's not so great: The original trilogy was better, but this is still good.

There are a few great movies that I will probably re-buy many times. This is one. This is the best example of this movie that I'm aware of, and it's not expensive, so unless you are already content with another version of this film, you should buy this. WHAT?! You've never seen this movie... time to fix that.
